Don Eller intros

I'm not very versed in the hybridizers names except for the standard Stamile, Carpenter, Smith etc. I came across his intro "Lady Duck" in the 2008 Junior Citations award and went to check out his web site. His daylilies are pretty, so I wonder if any of you have any experience with them (new or old intros of course)....Maryl

Don and Nancy Eller (from GA) are two hybridizers on the way up! Nancy in fact won 3 Junior Citations for 2008 as well as one Honorable Mention. Don received 1 JC and 2 HMs in 2008. Don named his 'Lady Duck' for Nancy, and it is certainly a beauty! They are very nice folks - I had the pleasure of meeting them both last fall in Valdosta. Nancy specializes in doubles. I grow two of hers - MEMORIES OF MARY JANE and ARMS REACHING OUT, and they're both great. Her AMANDA'S LITTLE RED SHOES is a gorgeous red double and I'd like to get that one too. Don specializes more in those with the fancy edges. I don't grow any of his but have heard good things about both of their cultivars.

Thanks for the information on them. I like the looks of their intros and some of the names just have to make you smile. "Awesome Quacker" anyone?

I'm so glad that you're turning out (I've seen your other post) to be an avid poster. Keep more pictures coming!!! Your roses are heavenly. Your Love and Peace really stands out. Gorgeous!!! I adore my Paradise. Don't you just love that rose!? It's one of my more hardy roses growing in pots. Your dog is precious too!! What a sweetie!! Is that a breed - red nose? Just curious. twotogo - thank you for your nice welcome. This is kind of a weird situation - kind of premature for real retirement planning - but it is a one time opportunity that we need to make some decisions on in the not too distant future. I know from past experiences when we considered building a home that I have a hard time compromising on what I want vs. what I can afford. Remodeling our kitchen was very educational in terms of the cost of different choices. I have actually spent quite a bit of time over the years pondering house plans and other house stuff - either at times we considered building or at times we considered remodeling to improve things in our current home. I'm a big fan of The Not So Big House - spending more on the character of a smaller space vs. on more space. I know I have a hard time with the idea of making a decision from a plan where I've never actually been in the house - or at least seen photos of the "finished goods". That is why I am drawn to things that are closer to what I've had. Also entirely unclear at this point if we would sell current place in the foreseeable future and build new place in next few years - or just buy the property now and build retirement place in 10 years or so. All kinds of ideas spinning around at this point - it's fun to consider the possibilities.

I have been seeing some of the Eller daylilies and do like them. How Northern hardy are they?

Nancy's plants have wintered over for the past two years w/ no trouble at all. I'm on the edge of zone 6/7. Don Eller was a twin - his brother ( now deceased ) was named Ron ( Ronald) and he was Donald. That's why he grew up with the name "Donald Duck" from all the kids, hence the names of so many of his daylilies have the name "Duck" in them. Don has also named a daylily after his late ( twin) brother - 'Ron Eller Memorial.'

I went back and looked at his/her past intros and I too liked Amanda's Little Red Shoes. If it was just a wee bit less expensive I'd have it........Very interesting and a little sad about how the "Duck" theme came to be. When I was a little kid I got a white duckling for Easter and became very attached to "Fuzzy" over the years. Ever since then I've had a fondness for white ducks, including "Donald". Glad I ran across his site.

I have about 10 Eller daylilies. All have performed well for me and equally important they look in my garden the way they look in the pictures.

A couple of other up and coming hybridizer to be aware of are Bill Waldorp and Linda Agin.
