I really like Bella Sera, myself, and I would think it must be in about the same price range as Popcorn Pete. It produces some very nice kids as well, so if you hybridize, it's a really nice one to have.

Jennie, it would help to know what shade of purple you're looking for. Do you want the deep black purples, the blue purples, or maybe the red purples.
Popcorn Pete tends to be on the red purple side. Take a look at the recent thread on Moldovan dl's. There's several purples there that might give you an idea as to the shade you desire.
If you're looking for the lighter shades then I too would highly recommend Bella Sera. I also grow and love, St. Croix, Lavender Fantasia, Tahoe, Another Chance Today, and there are lots more that escapes my memory at the moment. :)

You must have been posting at the same time I was! Gosh, I wish I could grow teeth! Your Blissful Blackberry Pie is to die for!

Blissful Blackberry Pie is really eye catching, but all of them could come into my garden anytime they liked. As with all "purples" however I have to ask if any of them are sunfast. That would give them an additional 10 points in my book....Since this subject has come up I thought I'd show a daylily in that color range that I simply don't get. Does someone find this one attractive?

All of the ones I posted fade some on very hot days. Moonlight Sail holds it color the best. Bohemia After Dark and Sapphire Lady fade the most. The other two, Regal Fantasy and I Remember You fade, but still look fairly good at the end of the day.

Thanks Debra. I appreciate your take on the fading problem. I have a spot I'd like to put a dark purple but since it will be in full hot sun and easily seen by people, fading to blah is out. I've been told about Bela Lugosi being sunfast, but was hoping for more options. It's a nice uncomplicated daylily, which is fine, but I can't help looking for a bit more.

The very best I've grown in the last several years is JENNIFER TRIMMER. It is crayon purple, large and outstanding! One of its parents is the now infamous "best edge" seedling from Matthew Kaskel. The picture is good and doesn't even come close to how pretty this flower is.

Wow! Jennifer Trimmer is EXACTLY what I was picturing my ideal purple to look. I've got to get one! Any suggestions on that one? :-)

I bought mine directly from the hybridizer, Dan Trimmer. I was very pleased with the division he sent me, always am.It's not a cheap plant, but worth every penny.

It is too early for me to give any suggestions. Very few of my purples have bloomed in my garden yet. I am looking forward to Moonlight Sail, Tower of Babel, Enduring Freedom, Major General and a second year on Antique Nouveau. Its first year was on a short scape and the blooms looked a bit tatty. Here is the best bloom.

I really like Magical Swirls, Lavender Passion, and Blueberry Frost.

I love the purples, but they are usually (esception (somewhat) being Bluberry Breakfast and Indian Giver) going to be the redder not bluer purple in my garden.

Hi there, Daylily gang! I am going to add a bunch of daylilies to my yard -- I'm planning to cover half of my front slope with them, running down the hill in two diagonal swaths. It should be really eye-catching!

I just read this thread about purples. I am also interested in the blue purples -- although a grape juice color would be fine, too. Just nothing that is going to look pink or mauve -- or red. Purple!

I am sort of new to daylilies, and not a collector by any means. I know many of the gorgeous and unusual varieties are pricey. I need something that is going to spread well and bloom a lot -- while still not costing too much.

I found a supplier in Tennessee that sells Grape Magic -- 25 plants (2-3 fans each) for $70.00. That seemed reasonable. (Mountain Farm Daylilies.)

Have any of you grown this daylily? Is it good looking? Since it will cover a large area of my front yard, I want it to look nice.

Any thoughts for me? I'm in Georgia. Thanks!!!!!!!!

I LOVE PURPLES!! Purples and pinks are my favorites in the daylily color palette. But just remember( Van Sellers taught me this many years ago)dark colors tend to recede into the landscape!! If you only plant purples without some light or brighter colors to balance them, then they might not show up as well as you think. You can do this with other lighter colored companion plants or other lighter colored daylilies. I tend to plant the purples near yellows, pinks and whites so that they will pop.

As floota says above, planting only purples might not look as bright as you wish. Consider planting some lighter colors to accent them. 'Grape Magic' is a fairly small plant and flower, at 20" high and 4" flower. You'd probably want to space them 10-20" apart.
Since you are in Georgia, there are so many great daylily gardens in your state, why don't you visit a couple close to you and get some first hand recommendations. See the Source List link below.

For the rest of the purple cravers, a few purples I haven't seen mentioned, but are very hardy plants are: 'Evening Enchantment', 'Troubled Sleep', 'Black Ambrosia' and 'Cosmic Sensation'.
