Shrub With Small, Bluish-Purple Berries?
Comments (3)Ah, so Sweet Myrtle (Myrtus communis) has edible berries too, eh? The fresh berries have an almost sweet quality that the astringent leaves do not possess. Myrtle berries are fully ripe when their color is purplish-black. Around here this happens as late as November or December....See MoreSmall shrub suggestion
Comments (1)Blue Muffin will get very large, much larger than what you want. You might look at a purple leafed barberry, which would make a nice contrast with the salmon daylilies, or, even better, a purple leafed smoke bush like Cotinus 'Velvet Cloak'. If you go with this, forgo the blooms and cut it to the ground annually for the spectacular flush of purple leaves. It will get taller than 4 feet, but not much wider....See MorePurple shrubs that don't lose leaves and have no thorns needed.
Comments (2)Sorry......for your area there is nothing with that coloring that holds its leaves all year. In fact, there are a very limited number of plants that offer that feature for even very mild climate gardens. The closest you may be able to get is to use lavender for a hedge. 'Hidcote' English lavender stays very compact compared to most varieties and has a very dark purple flower. You will need to shear the plant tightly on an annual basis to keep in a neat, hedge-like form. There are some other, almost dwarf forms as well but Hidcote is very hardy and widely available....See MoreSmall shrub rose suggestions needed, please...
Comments (5)What do you mean with "small" ? Dwarf rugosas grow about 4 feet here, but I have learned from this forum that they become larger in colder climates. They like shadow and dislike hot sun. I use them for northern exposure, with few hours of morning sun. Some china roses: minima (the name is well chosen!) but also hermosa (a recent addition to my collection thanks to this forum). Also, you could consider many creeping roses, which usually stay under 3 feet, some even under 2 feet. The Fairy, Knirps, Gartnerfreude etc And also the "compact" collection of carefree roses by Meilland (peach compact, white compact , etc). Other snall and easy roses by meilland are Anadia, Cumbaya, Sangria All these are usually sold as very resistant roses for an easy garden. I own only some of them (dwarf rugosas, ch. hermosa, knirps, the fairy, gartnerfreude, sangria) and they did not disappoint me. I am going to buy Chinensis Minima, sometimes called 'angel wings'. Looks very nice among rocks....See More- 10 years ago
