which plants will grow here

Anyone have any advise for our situation?

We bought some acreage in Charlotte County with the intention of building a house and growing plants, of course.

Due to a myriad of circumstances the house is still not built, but the land is mostly mowed, a good size pond dug, couple of shipping containers brought in for storage. We spent a lot of time there last winter and spring camping out and just enjoying the rural environment. It was great!

Well, along comes summer and our especially abundant rains. The pond which was 4' below the surface level has filled to the brim and any low spots held water for days till it had time to soak in. In general it's mostly a soggy mess.

We realize that we will eventually have to raise the level of the land a foot or so, but at this time, that is out of our budget. This will be a work in progress, a bit at a time as finances allow.

So the question is, what plants are tolerant to these conditions: poor drainage in summer and dry in winter. The pond will supply water as needed. We're aware some of the natives will be happy, but how about some of the tropicals?

Any suggestions for trees as well as ornamentals and edibles?

Jo
