Try Firebush or Golden Dewdrop. They both get huge very fast and make nice hedges.

Do you have room for a wide hedge or should it be narrower?

I love firebush and duranta (golden dewdrop) but they both are wide and not good to shear.

Having asked that question however there aren't many natives that are narrow and tall (if any).

Cocoplum. It's native, tough and can grow up to 15ft but can be kept as a hedge if needed. Great looking plant.

Elephant ears would do great each one could become a great screen from 8' to as low as they grow. Looks tropical and does great jod to block out neighbors

I agree with Cocoplum - just about the nicest of the native hedge plants. But if you can, try to use other plants with it to make the hedge look less formal.

Jamaican Caper - Capparis cynophallophora
Fiddlewood - Citharexylum fruiticosum
Necklace Pod - Sophora tomentosa

I completely forgot about Cocoplum! What is its growth rate?

I have planted firebush around the house and I think it gets to wide and not dense enough. It is one of my favorites though.

linchat - Cocoplum is a fast growing shrub / small tree. If you buy 3 gallon cans that plant out at anywhere from 18" to 24" you will have a six foot plant in less than a year. However, and this goes for all the plants listed, if you want a dense hedge, it's going to take longer since you'll want to trim every month to force the plant to fill out.

Why should you not trim / shear firebush? Will doing so kill the plant?

I have some wax myrtles on the fence line. But they are growing very slowly. Tried fertilizing with Miracle Gro, 666 and Fish Emulsion. They are creepers. Two of them are faster growers but they get shade at the root system, the rest grow much slower.

Any fertilizer recommendations?

it's OK to trim firebush but it's growth habit doesn't lend itself to shearing, that's better for small leaved plants/bushes that can be pinched back to be bushy and dense.

I love my firebush but it would require a lot of width to be a hedge.

My vote is for Firebush, plus the butterfly's love them.

I thought Simpson Stopper was a slow grower, but I hear from different sources different growth rates. Does anyone have any experience with them in Florida? Thinking of hedging with them.

The firebush are my favorites, but my wife :) does not find the same beauty in them as I! I've gotten away with planting the 7-8 that I have along the house, so now got to do something different.

I like the cocoplum, just not sure as a long running hedge.

Anythoughts on Simson Stopper?

I have 2 simpson stoppers and mine are slow. They are small leaved but not really hedg-y. They want to be trees with interesting trunks not bushes.

I have mine planted in an informal hedge between our house and next doors, mixed in with native coffee and a variety of other natives including porterweed, hercules club, wild lime and many others.

A new choice I've just added in the hedge to block the view is jatropha. It's bushy,flowery, butterfly beloved and will get tall. It's my new favorite in the hedge.

I've sheared my firebush and it's quite dense. I have also trimmed it from the bottom, though, along with the dewdrop so that both of them are weeping. They look great.

How tall do the firebush get? My firebush I have are about 3 foot tall, planted about 4 months ago. I have read they only get about 3-4 foot, higher but may need support.

Alright, I think I have settled in on Cocoplum. Thanks for the help all, just wanted to be sure before throwing the money down on 30-40 plants.

I actually still going to also plant some firebush in one section of the fence line. I asked this question before, I posted after, did not want it to get missed. How tall will the firebush get?

I am 5'2" and my firebush is about my height, probably a little taller than me. In the ground for 3-4 years.

Same as joanm. I'd guess mine is close to 6 feet.

Cocoplum will do great for you.

I went outside and snapped pics of the firebush and golden dewdrop. Personally I prefer the golden dewdrop, I think it's prettier with the blue and yellow flowers, and I like the delicate look of the leaves. It's hard to tell from these pics how tall the bushes are but they each are just at six feet. Butterflies love both! The firebush is the first image.

The firebush is outstanding! I like the ground treatment. The golden dewdrop is so-so, but picture may not be doing it justice.
