First daylily order - any insight on the following?

I have had a bed of "ditch lilies" and some Stella D'Oro daylilies on our property and have enjoyed them. However, after lurking around this forum, two days ago I placed my first order of daylilies. I went for mostly inexpensive varieties as I am just easing into them. Can anyone provide any insight into the following -

I am especially interested in:

-which of these does best in partial shade (4-6 hours of light)

-which ones require any special care, and if so, what do they need

-any companion plant recommendations for these. I am designing a few new beds and would love to know what some good combinations people have are!

The only one on your list that I grow is Sherry Lane Carr. Got a mild case of rust in my garden this year, but nothing too serious. From experience I can tell you it's not one of the daylilies that likes too much shade. An eastern exposure is fine, but it really needs more then 6 hours of sunlight to bloom its best. A pretty, steady, reliable daylily that I think is a good choice. As to shade tolerant daylilies, that term always makes me nervous. Daylilies really are not shade plants, but since you defined it as 6 hours of sunlight, from personal experience, here are a few that do well in my garden under those conditions: Velvet Shadows, Green Mystique, Bittersweet Destiny (if you don't have rust in your area), Rose Masterpiece, Sour Puss, Mr. Lucky. The only ones on your list that I have is PEARL HARBOR and TRAHLYTA. Oldies but goodies. Both do excellent here. BUT I do have my daylilies in full sun for more than 6 hours. Not sure if either of those would like less sun.

My first two daylilies I bought together several years ago--these were Chicago Sunrise and Mini Pearl--both from a local garden centre.I still have and love them both--the pair of them just flower their little socks off for me! For several years I just had these two until summer 2007 when my dad saw an advert for a daylily mail order firm and sent off for a catalogue-----FATAL!!! We expected it to just be things like Bonanza, Stafford and Sammy Russell--when the catalogue arrived my Dad and I were like kiddies in a sweet shop--we went mad! I have about 40 varieties now, you wouldn't consider most of them very exciting I'm sure compared to what is available in the states, but I now have a combination of oldies and goodies and some newer varieties including a few Lambertsons. I also have some seedlings started last year and a number of seed crosses which I plant to start outside in the next couple of weeks (several Blue-eyed Guy crosses and also Indian Giver X Smoke Scream and Indian Giver X Carolina Bound) but it will be a couple of years until I see flowers from those. Today I ordered Aquamarine--no idea where I am going to put it!! Bright Spangles is also due to arrive and I am seriously considering Crystal Blue Persuasion, but that is still relatively expensive here and as I am on disability am not sure if I can justify the cost. Hoping to see Blue Jay Way, Jennie Butterfield and Priscilla's Dream flower for the first time this year. Polish Cocktail, Novelty Number and Purple Pinwheel are also new but I may need to wait til next year to see them flower. Other recent purchases are Beat the Barons and Velvet Shadows, with English Toffee and Orange Velvet on order--hoped to order Rocket City as well but sold out :0( But I have my first scape on Changing Latitudes :0) Nikki

To be frank, Kay, I was irritated enough by the invasive request that I deleted it right off, but I vaguely recall that they wanted a scanned copy of a utility bill, or something of that sort, to prove that a) I was who I said I was and b) I live where I said I live. I can totally get behind wanting to make sure that lily auction sellers aren't getting ripped off, but I'm not sending that sort of thing to anyone. I'm glad to get into daylilies, though. Black Cherry is a wonderful heirloom tomato to grow in Florida. It is prolific and very tasty. Looks purple-gray with a tangy sweet taste. Some people say smoky taste but I don't taste that. It's a grownup sweet taste, not sugary. Denise

The food strainer I mentioned will not allow any seeds or skins into the sauce. The holes in the conical sieve are very small and they just push stems and cores out and any fibers through as pulp, but seeds and skins go out the end. I take all that 'waste', and run it through a second time to push out all the rest of the liquid, and even then it will not allow any skins or seeds through. These food strainers can also use a motor unit instead of the hand crank. They are designed with the same kind of motor a pasta rolling machine would use. The link below also shows two different dedicated electric models for tomatoes only. Serious enough for the 2000 pounds of tomatoes!! Big Boy, Better Boy, Early Girl are fine as eating toms, but tend to be more watery and less pulpy. I grew many roma and plum types and also like the oxheart which is really meaty, but has a flaw, that its not as tasty as a home grown plum tomatoes. I get tomato seeds from Tomato Growers and also Totally Tomatoes. They have sections just for the sauce or paste type tomatoes. One time I decided to make use of the skins and seeds, and put it all in a big powerful blender (Vitamix). It never broke down the seeds, but did good with the skins. I added some of the juice I extracted earlier and cooked it down to a thick paste. It was AWFUL!! Seeds and skins just don't make tomatoes taste good anymore, no matter what you do. I had made the mistake of not tasting that blended part and added it to a batch of sauce. Luckily it was just about 6 quarts and I had to toss it out, as it was the worst tasting mess I ever had. I even ruined a big stainless steel pot as it boiled dry and then warped the pot. I had fallen asleep while it was simmering.. Never do that again!! No bodies perfect.. I grow PEARL HARBOR and SHERRY LANE CARR but in a mostly sunny bed. They are both good performers. SLC has one of the highest bud counts in my garden. I used to grow SCARLET ORBIT and had it in a partly shady bed because it had melted in full sun. It didn't melt in the shadier bed, but the bud count was under 10.

Fabulous. I have had no issues with rust here thus far thankfully. Good to know about the shade tolerance on those four, they will get penciled into beds tomorrow! Quite excited about SLC now too! Thank you much!

Trahlyta IS a good oldie. I also have Merry Witch, it can fade a bit in the sun and water spot-but large blooms and hearty grower.

Zella Virginia--a marvelous little double and reblooms. Scarlet Orbit--a classic red that won't disappoint. Tar and Feather always attracts attention here, though not a fast increaser. French Tudor is a soft pink with a watermarked eye.

Cavamarie, I got China Bride at earlybirddaylilies but I just looked through their list and they seem to be out now.

Mantis, by not a fast increaser do you mean the size of the clump?
