do you think about your garden all day??m

I swear, no matter what I am doing, I just always am thinking about my garden and I wonder if I'm just going off the deep end, it is a constant in my mind.

I am so excited, I went to visit a nursery yesterday and got two free plants:one silver buttonwood and one yellow elder(needs alot of tlc,roots are a mess,out of pot and in the ground really deep!)

Is this normal newbie gardener behavior?

me too, I am thinking about my garden around the clock. And no, this has nothing to do with being a newbie, I am serious into gardening since 20+ years and enjoy every day and loved every yard I transformed into a garden.

My garden and my other passion - quilting - are on my mind constantly. I check GardenWeb 3 or 4 times a day from work so I guess I'm not fighting the obsession too hard!

A few years ago when I needed to have an MRI on my knee, the tech mentioned afterwards that she had rarely seen any patient remain absolutely motionless and calm for the 45 minutes the test required. I told her the truth: that in my mind I was digging up a patch of grass in my backyard and planting a new garden. Digging the hole, choosing just the right plant, loosening the roots before putting it in the ground. It was a great place to escape to! Yeah, I think about my garden all the time. If you are looney, at least you aren't alone! There are many of us.

Okay, here's my critique. You probably did not design it, actually, you just built it--a big raised bed with a fence around it. Ideally, I would use a completely different design for a fully-fenced garden as for one not fenced--both as to dimensions and where the garden actually "is" with regard to the house and to the fence and to any paths or stepping stones that will be needed. However, you were able to take some advantage of where you attached the fencing to the perimeter. You can retrofit it now with some kind of step stones or paths in order to try to work in it. It's too close to the house so you lose the ability move very well back there or to work freely through the back fence or to run a wheelbarrow back there. You lose a little bit of some space advantage you could have had to let larger plants (indeterminate tomatoes; peas and beans) which like to spill out over the back sides--but you could still place them at the ends. These types of vegetables are really fun to grow in places where you can just saunter up to pick them at eye level (I am revealing my middle-agedness here). Of course, it isn't that much fun to try to work through the squares of fence, so you will mostly want to work from inside. If you put a path through the middle then will still have a few feet on either side for your crops. You can have a lot of fun with this garden regardless and learn a lot about growing different types of stuff. I always feel pressure to try to put as much as possible in the small veggie garden, but sometimes that can take the fun out of it (pressure! pressure!) as much as it can be fun. But if you do check out some of the photos and articles on small-space or square foot gardening, they will have some helpful tips on where to place different vegetables with regard to each other (height and growth patterns, time to maturity, multi-season planting). I would work out your pathways, and plan on enjoying plenty of tomatoes (next year) , herbs, and lettuces. In your zone, you can plant cilantro and parsley now and it will grow all winter and thaw out great after freezes. Also all kinds of lettuces and greens as suggested above.

"Fall weather" doesn't seem to start here until November ... sigh I'm going to run the dirt as paint protector theory by my dh. Same here with the frustration and depression to be moved in but not really "finished". And knowing that will actually take years since we did all the work ourselves and I'm totally burned out. And yet I've been doing this for a year now and I struggle to turn the "builder's brain" off. That being said, the SO proposed this spring when we moved in, so I've swapped "builder's brain" for "marriage planning" and suddenly I have a whole new hobby to keep me busy. I of course, feared that I was replacing one obsession with another and post-wedding would likely find myself doubly-depressed...only to realize that we're gung-ho to start our family so we're pretty much going to never stop and just be bored again in our lives. Which is kinda terrifying too.

I think mine has gone beyond just being a garden since the whole operation now includes livestock (chickens and fish and worms.) The gardens themselves expand and travel like giant dirt/organic matter amoebas.

Seed packets have taken over my desk. Any area of "lawn" that has the slightest sign of a problem gets the cardboard, wood chip and compost solution and will be another garden patch before being allowed to turn back into lawn again in a few season.

I WAKE UP THINKING ABOUT IT! I thought I had O.C.D. or something, really, I am glad I saw this thread. I was thinking of joing GA Gardening Anonymous :). It is constant, it can be even a nuisance at times, because I know I should be doing something else.

Many times I get caught up doing stuff in the garden before I walk inside the house. Now I come and put my purse inside but I'm right out the door again. How are my caterpillars doing? I've gotta pull that weed! Oh, look what is blooming! Look how big my key lime is getting! Ah, those seeds finally sprouted. Hmm the new sod needs water. My cassia sure is pretty! Oooh! I got one of those CTF with orajel-cool.
It's a healthy thing.

LOL!! Me too Ricky! I just "DO" my garden all day long. Kate, when I was getting spinal injections and I had to remain perfectly calm and still even tho the injections burned and hurt, I would take a deep breath and recite flowers/plants alphabetically until they were done...the pain management Doc was alarmed the first time to hear me whispering, then he finally got used to me rattling off plant names. They actually kept it in my chart where I left off last injection visit. They would tell me prior to the shot...start with dischidia!!

Right now I wake thinking about my tomato seedlings daily...and dream about 'em too! When something consumes you, just be glad it's gardening!

Well, given the state of the economy I'm sure obsessing over my veggie garden...gotta get better with year-around production (i.e. summer). I can't believe I've managed NOT to lose virtually anything in my 401K but if things keep going the way they are it will be worthless paper anyway.

Great topic, I'm so glad to know I'm not alone! I was joking with my co-worker today that I was going to install a webcam on my vegetable garden so I could watch the seedlings any minute I wanted to - from anywhere!

This whole topic is pretty funny. It is also funny to see other people bypassing the front door and going to the garden before going inside! My DW complains that I like the plants better, I say hi to them first. Or she really likes it when I walk in the front door and straight out the back door without saying a word... Ouch.. I am learning, now I say hi. lol.

Ha ha Lin-my guys are learning too...they now check through the house to see if I am inside before closing the garage door! LOL I have gone out at 10pm with a flashling, ya know.

My morning starts in the porch with a cup of coffee. I wait until the sun just peeps up, then barefoot patrol begins. It is my greatest joy. Too bad to have to go to work, and I regret the hours spent at the grind vs what I really love. Losing daylight in the fall and winter always bums me out a bit.

I need to add an addendum to my statement above, I don't think about the garden all day, I wake up at 3:00 A.M. thinking about the garden and then can't get back to sleep :-( :-)
