How long can my orchids stay in the garage?
Comments (10)No problem for a week, or even more if necessary. I keep about 50 Catt hybrids in those double-length milk crates, in the garage all winter long. The garage does not have any extra lighting, just a fluorescent on the ceiling and the garage opener light when the cars are going in and out. On nice sunny days, I wheel them out when the temps reach more than 50F. Other times, they stay in until the weather warms. They grow and bloom just fine this way. However, this week I have had to bring them into the house (no room in the greenhouse) since the night temps have been in the upper-teens to low-20s. Even in the garage, that means low-40s, and that is too cold for this batch. Keeping them in big milk crates or boxes makes this just three trips to move them all. My other cold-tolerant orchids, such as L. purpuratas, were moved indoors as well. There is a limit to how much cold even they can take without damage. For the Florida folk here, they say it is going to be even worse this coming weekend so be prepared. I remember 1977 in Miami when it went down to the low-20s at my house and snowed! We lived out west of the airport back when there were still ranches and dairies and even an over-wintering traveling circus. Woke my son up that night to see his first snow; he was 7 years old. Not exactly snow angel quantities, but still something to see!...See MoreHow long can Camellias stay indoors?
Comments (2)Camellias can be kept inside indefinitely, given enough light, adequate humidity, and cool night temps (all of which are hard to achieve in the average home). What you do have to realize is that if you DO keep your shrub inside for more than a few days, it won't remain acclimated to outside winter temps. If the growth buds (the smaller ones behind the flower buds) begin to break dormancy while the plant is inside, those will be killed if subjected to any frost at all for the rest of the winter. So if you keep it inside for more than a couple of weeks, you're probably commiting to keeping it inside all winter....See MoreHow long can seed stay in a shipping envelope and be viable - 5 months
Comments (1)How long seed stays viable depends on the type of plant. Some of our weed seeds stay viable for 50 years in the lawn. Seems I heard that some scientist germinated a lotus seed that was 2000 years old. Other types need to be planted immediately and many of them stay viable for varying lengths of time depending on how they are stored. That's where seed banks come in. This is a very fascinating subject with a huge amount of variability....See MorePotting mix that stays wet for long periods
Comments (8)"nd god knows what the crystals will do dealing with that ...]" They freeze and shatter into much smaller crystals. They still retain water...er, ice...but... :-) Yeah, that's why I don't use the things. When I had them, they were mildly useful when transplanting small things into the gardens in spring. Even the more developed ones were entirely capable of taking care of themselves. "well.. sorta ... but natural drainage.. might be different than drainage in a pot .." It is. The MG soil I mentioned is pretty light and doesn't waterlog easily, but does hold a good amount of water. Root rot hasn't been an issue with anything I've tried. I do leave my pots out, even plastic ones, and they're fine. I bring more delicate ceramics in as they'll shatter, but leave heftier terracotta ones outside, the one I own (I dropped the other one). We can have the discussion all day but...well, I tend to be a lot less choosy on soils than many around here. Pretty much everything gets plunked into MG soil and does great, including a couple of desert roses before I knew better. On that one, though, I think I got lucky and I did know not to water to excess....See MoreTNY78
