How long can seed stay in a shipping envelope and be viable - 5 months

So, I tried to send some of my Pamianthe seed to my daughter who lives in Tokyo, Japan. While others arrived to other growers just fine, hers were denied entry and shipped back to me - 5 months later (I've since learned Japan has new restrictions for seed importing). I thought I would float them as I have never done that before to see if they would germinate. After 10 days, they did not. Never deterred, I thought why not toss them in a pot of their normal growing media and see what happens. I'm shocked to say that 5 days later they have germinated just fine! I know seed can stay viable for a very long time if stored properly, but apparently they can do just fine in a bubble envelope for 5 months as well. These plants just keep teaching me new things! :o) Dan
