Ditto on Denninmi's comments on NZ spinach. Germination would likely be very poor, as has been reported by others. I recommend planting in cells as well, with the added step of soaking & pre-sprouting before planting. Soak the seeds in water over night (always use sterile water if possible), then drain excess water & keep moist until the first signs of sprouting appear. I keep the still-wet seeds in a covered bowl, then pluck out the seeds as they sprout & plant them. I should say "seeds" in quotes, since they are not really single seeds, but seed clusters. There is another advantage to planting in pots - the sprouts look like weeds! Some who report no germination might have pulled them out by mistake. NZ spinach will sprawl quite a bit; it forms thick clumps even in my short summers. The plants in the photo below are 12" apart. I even had some volunteers appear under one of my squash patches, and they were quite happy in the shade, spreading to 3' across! Of all of the "spinaches" (Egyptian, Malabar, etc.) NZ spinach is the most spinach-like in flavor & texture, IMO. The yield can be enormous. It has a fairly high oxalic acid content, though... a little higher than regular spinach.

g'day, nz spinach aka warrigal greens, we grow it all the time don't eat much of it, have used some of the youngest leaves only in stir fry until they wilt, could add some young leaves to salads if desired. it will grow in lots of places likes to have good moisture but, around here it also grows down around the edge of the bay and the mangrove swamps so will take it salty and sandy. should imagine a salty environ' might alter taste a little? can't comment on taste it has been a long time since i actually ate any. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

yes, but are you going to let it get to be full grown before you start eating it? I would imagine you will go out there and take a little snip here and a little snip there....I've done it for years and have never had NZ spinach travel outside the single square...this is one of the things Mel talks about all the time...SFG is so easy-its hard for the experts to understand what we try to do...I'll bet if you called up Cornell and asked them, after giving you advice, if they have a SFG....the answer will be no-I'll be taking the advice of fellow SFG'ers who have the experience under their belts...just a thought...

For spinach and leaf lettuce, just keep picking the outer leaves as they mature. Eventually it will get too warm for spinach. Lettuce likes cool weather too, but mine always manages to keep growing even when it gets pretty hot out. The stalks will get long and floppy though, so eventually I just pick the last bit and yank the whole thing out and put something else in. We eat a lot of lettuce, so I sow seed at staggered start dates to ensure we'll always have some to pick. For head lettuce, you pick the whole head when it is mature.
