Roofing Question - Drip Edge
Comments (5)The purpose of a drip edge is to force water to drop straight down into the gutter instead of running back and up under the shingles. It should be placed at the eave (horizontal roof edge) and the rake (sloped roof edge). I've seen gutters with an apron that goes under the shingles but for it to be effective it must extend onto the roof about 6 inches and the self-adhering flashing (Ice & Water Shield) must be installed over it and then the shingles should be installed. Now that the roofing has been installed there aren't a lot of options available to you. Ask him how far the gutter extends under the shingles....See MoreGutter Brackets and Drip Edge Issue
Comments (3)The gutter is half round aluminum and is attached with brackets. There are no exposed rafters so I guess the boxed cornice would describe the area next to the gutters. The brackets holding the gutters are attached to the decking under the shingles and must go over or under an aluminum drip edge which was installed when the roof was replaced. I see no way to avoid contact with the drip edge since is is an angle shape with each leg about 1.5 inches wide. So it is not unusual here - in fact all houses in the neighborhood have the same type roof, drip edge and gutters. In other words, if you tried to avoid contact with the drip edge, the gutter would have to be installed about 2 inches below the edge of the roof and a lot of thewater coming off the roof would probably miss the gutter and it would look strange....See MoreNew roof - contractor didn't install drip edge
Comments (2)The roof cannot wear out faster whether an item is installed or not UNDER the roof. The drip edge kicks the water out away from the fascia and into the gutter. You shouldn't pay the contractor until you inspect the finished job to see all the job parameters have been completed and done to a skill level that is appropriate. It becomes more ardous for you now. If you paid for the drip edge then either get it installed or get a credit and call someone else in to do it. Get estimates first so you know how much of a credit to ask for. Ron...See MoreNew roof--paint under drip edge?
Comments (2)Usually the fascia is covered with aluminum trim coil, either pre-formed or formed at the jobsite. What is your plan on how to cover it? Paint or metal? If they install the aluminum fascia cover, it will slip under the drip edge break and essentially make it waterproof. If you choose to paint it, simply use a 4" wallboard knife to lift the drip edge up and away as you brush paint under it. The raw wood under the drip edge will last a long, long time.
