Gutter Brackets and Drip Edge Issue

Have a composition roof with metal drip edge. What is the proper way to attach the brackets to the roof when new gutters are installed? Should they be attached over or under the drip edge leg that is attached to the roof?

I have seen a case where the gutter installer pulled the vertical leg out and put the bracket under the other leg of the drip edge which pulls the drip edge away from the facia. Looks like if installed under the drip edge, the vertical leg should be notched to clear the bracket?

Also, my installer removed the old gutters by cutting the bracket, leaving the attached end under the shingle. I am going to insist that these ends be removed before new gutters are installed.

There are a lot of different gutters and installation methods. You need to say what the climate is, material of the gutter (copper, aluminum, wood, etc.) the type of gutter (half round, box), how it is attached to the roof (hung, brackets, etc.) and how the roof eave is designed (exposed rafters, boxed cornice, etc.). It is unusual for a gutter to be close to a drip edge to interact with it so I'm not sure what you are describing.

The gutter is half round aluminum and is attached with brackets. There are no exposed rafters so I guess the boxed cornice would describe the area next to the gutters.

The brackets holding the gutters are attached to the decking under the shingles and must go over or under an aluminum drip edge which was installed when the roof was replaced. I see no way to avoid contact with the drip edge since is is an angle shape with each leg about 1.5 inches wide. So it is not unusual here - in fact all houses in the neighborhood have the same type roof, drip edge and gutters. In other words, if you tried to avoid contact with the drip edge, the gutter would have to be installed about 2 inches below the edge of the roof and a lot of thewater coming off the roof would probably miss the gutter and it would look strange.

Paula, we have 5 fertilizer treatments per year. But our neighborhood is only 15 years old and almost everyone has a fertilizer treatment service. So, weeds haven't been a problem, for most of the neighborhood (the exception being the house about 300 feet away that's a dandelion farm). Hubby mows cross-directionally once a week. Most importantly, we have an irrigation system. Our lawn became much thicker and healthier when we installed it and it got all the water it needed. This pic was also taken in May, before the late-summer drought had set in.

I understand what he's saying there. I guess that is correct---a drip edge is to protect the roof and not really to protect the fascia board. But the roof is supposed to overhang the gutter in order to direct water into the gutter. So for him to say his only job was to protect the roof, well, I disagree. I don't think it's standard to bend the drip edge, at least, for a pro. He's just going to put it on there because of the warranty issues involved for him if he makes any modifications. If you were doing it, well, you'd do whatever it took to satisfy your needs. This is just my opinion and means nothing--but it seems that today's gutters are thinner than what they used to be. So you get gaps in the back of them against the fascia board. That's why I screwed down the back of mine, because there was a lot of gapping. Since WHEN is it normal for water to run down a fascia board???? Seems like another "french wave" statement to me. If that were the case, everyone's siding would be streaked in black stains. And before the days of pressure treated or aluminum fascias, everyone would be replacing gutter board every few years. That is such a crazy statement. It seems before you hire ANYONE to do ANYTHING you now have to sit down with them and tell them exactly what you want and expect in every little,tiny area. In my opinion roofers are not very good at seeing small problem areas and finding good solutions to them. I was just on a newer roof last year after a friend had water coming in over a couple dormers. That cavity between the roof of the house and the roof of the dormer was exposed. Only because the roofer took no care in that little problem area. ACK--it's no wonder some of us try to do most work ourselves!!!!

millworkman: Proper installation is a necessity for a great many things. Poorly installed PVC trim can indeed mask other problems, but I have a hard time seeing that as a reason for not using it. Poorly installed wood trim can also mask problems as it rots in places hard to see from the outside. tlbean2004: Do not put PVC or anything else over wood. All that does is create a place for water to collect between two different materials. PVC is designed to be used alone as a replacement for wood. Will you ever have to replace it? Never is a very long time, but given correct installation, PVC trim will last much longer than wood. If your rot problems, however, were the result of improperly installed drip edge, etc., you may get good long life with wood once the problems are corrected. Rot resistant wood such as cedar or pressure treated is a good idea, but proper priming of all surfaces before installation is also very important.

We got a new roof when we moved in, and the water is pooling near the foundation. So I agree: gutters are really the best solution. We are likely doing a channel aka grate drain on our driveway (more visible) side of the house, but want to avoid all possible excess moisture on the side where we are considering gutters. Also, we have a tiny yard so it would be nice to make that area usable. Overall, we feel half round probably wouldn't be any less of a design sin than traditional gutters, so we may as well save some $.

If you are in snow country the gutter must be installed so it is below the projected plane of the roof. Ice sliding off the roof should miss the gutter but water should not. If you are getting enough water flow to overshoot the gutter you need something a lot larger than the largest half round gutter.

You can suspend the gutter from the roof above with new rods applied over the shingles and sealed with rubberized asphalt cement (or something better?) or you can use face brackets on the vertical eave trim board.

Nothing should be placed between the drip edge and the roof deck unless the gutter is built into the cornice.
