Roofing Question - Drip Edge

I am having a small second floor addition built onto the back of my house. The roof was put up today and it's been shingled. I hope I am correctly explaining what he said, but the contractor said something to the effect of it does not need a drip edge because when the gutter is installed he will bend the metal gutter up underneath the shingles which will act as a drip edge. Is this anacceptable way to do it? If it is acceptable to fashion a drip edge in this matter, could someone explain to me exactly how it should be done so I know whether he's doing it right? Thank you for any information you can give me.

felt over drip edge imo not the same issue as gutters.
sounds like he is trying to save a little in material costs and more in time/labor.

The way you have described the damage is a bit perplexing to me. Water damage to a ceiling typically won't come from the fascia (the wooden ban around the house to which the gutter is attached) unless there is no soffit (overhang) but by telling me you have vents, there must be.... The rafters (roof) sit on top of the exterior walls and extend typically one to two feet beyond which means they are LOWER than the interior ceiling. Leaking water at a drip edge or gutter overflow will cause extensive water damage at the fascia or soffit, not the interior of the house. There's probably only one way to find the water source. Pull the insulation back where the problem seems to be most prominent, and go into the attic WHILE IT'S RAINING and trace the source.

Though not Ontario Code required, a #30 felt or synthetic underlayment over the rest of the roof would be prudent too. Canada encompasses three to four climate zones, so roofing underlayment best practices will vary. (It's not all igloos and Polar bears!)

My vote is for Weathered Wood also. Really the only windows that are appropriate to have shutters are the two on the far right of the house. If you decide to keep them I would leave them the same color, or maybe just a shade darker and save the burgundy for the front door. I always like to have the front door a color that is different from the shutter colors to create a focal point to draw the eye to the entrance to the home. RES2, as I read those code provisions, particularly 903.1, it defers to the manufacturer's requirements for the roofing installation. Therefore my interpretation is that if the shingle manufacturer requires a drip edge for their system, then it is also required to be code compliant. Cobalty, who was the manufacturer of your shingles? Also, this may vary in this particular instance dependent upon the actual code language, but you are typically bound to follow all codes under which have jurisdiction in your area. That would mean both the state code and the local code. Where codes conflict, the more stringent must be followed. So for instance if the state of Ohio required drip edges (and RES2 appears to have pulled up language that suggests their requirement is not as black and white), but the county does not, then they would still be required. Similar to what Joseph has said, I find this to be an unwise place to cut back on construction. Drip edges cost how much, and how much more to install? Where else has your builder cut corners in order to save pennies?

The purpose of a drip edge is to force water to drop straight down into the gutter instead of running back and up under the shingles. It should be placed at the eave (horizontal roof edge) and the rake (sloped roof edge).

I've seen gutters with an apron that goes under the shingles but for it to be effective it must extend onto the roof about 6 inches and the self-adhering flashing (Ice & Water Shield) must be installed over it and then the shingles should be installed.

Now that the roofing has been installed there aren't a lot of options available to you. Ask him how far the gutter extends under the shingles.

The roof should have not only have a drip edge, it should be a vented drip edge.
The items shown in the link below can be retrofitted.

There is no reason to assume that the OP has not taken care of attic/roof ventilation in some other way.
