one last thing about butterfly gardens & then I'll shut up...

i've never had this many butterflies. really, it's shocking. my wife and i stand at the window, and sometimes there are too many butterflies to count.

what's the difference, i keep asking myself?

partly, i've decided on reflection, is the fact that the bushes (gardenias, camelias, Hamelia patens, ilex of all sorts) i've planted have finally gotten big enough to provide the cover that butterflies need. and that i'm growing a broad range of nectar plants and forage plants...

but i've decided that one of the main reasons: all the southern peas i've got growing this season. for so many butterflies, Fabaceae are such an important plant. they love the blooms, and they love the green.

plus, as low ground covers, they provide an important shelter for butterflies.

yet i've NEVER seen vigna (southern peas) listed as a butterfly-friendly plant. i don't know why this is... it's not native, but it is highly drought-tolerant, very very very easy to grow, and very pretty.

so, i'd like to throw it out there... want butterflies? then plant some cowpeas/southern peas/crowders... you get the winged company and a darn tasty veg.
