I personally think it's too late to do any planting here in NJ. You need those plants established for atleast 6 weeks before frost/freezing. We can get frost either late Oct or early Nov. I think it's too risky.

I don't plant this late in Northern Indiana, either. First frost usually comes around Mid-October, though last year it snowed in October.

Yes, I think it is definitely too late. Even if we have a late frost, the ground will be too cold to encourage root growth. Spring is best at this point!

I put in 6 more daylilies over the past 2 days and a bunch of other plants too. It's a great time of year for dividing and moving here in my zone 5 garden. I do it every fall and I rarely lose anything. The ground doesn't really freeze hard until Christmas. As long as you water them well for the next few weeks after you plant them they'll be fine in my experience.

I have a few bareroots left to come yet and I am still planting my potted ones. Only a dozen left to plant. We were 83 here today,but starting to go back to seasonal temps tomorrow. I planted through the end of Oct. last year and didn't lose any. Spring was late here and so is fall.

Hi I am in a z5 but treat it as a z3 due to weather conditions I live in Maine and if it was me the only way to plant now is if the plants are established in pots, dig a hole put the plant pots in it and cover up the plant pots up to the edge of the pots leave over winter as thay should due well. Dont try to plant bare root out side now as the plants will not have time to establish a good root system before a freezing frost or snow.

I think today would be OK for potted plants from a local nursery. Bare root in two weeks -- too late in my view. For your zone.
