Is it to late in the season to plant sedum in zone 5/6?

I just found some pretty sedum to use for a filler/ground cover and I am wondering if it is to late in the season to plant this in zone 5/6, central PA and expect it to survive our winter?

it is NEVER too late to plant.. anywhere ... presuming the ground isnt frozen solid ...

the issue in your zone... with ground freeze .. is heaving ...

when the soil freezes.. and thaws.. and re-freezers ... if the plant can not get a good root system down in enough time to hold itself in the ground ... it will heave out in march some time.. and you might find it in may.. all freeze dried ...

so to avoid the freeze/thaw ... you would bury it in late oct/nov in some mulch [straw/mulched fallen leaves] until about april .. so the soil freezes.. and stays frozen.. until april ...

a good general rule for ground freeze zones is as follows: GET IT DORMANT... KEEP IT DORMANT .... and most zone appropriate stock will live ...

all that said.. with sedum ... you could probably leave them on the driveway all winter.. and most would be plantable in spring.. lol ...

Thanks Ken. I thought I saw somewhere that it is pretty hardy, but since I only have Autumn Joy in my garden, which I really like, as do the bees, I would ask here.

May will be the last planting when the sweet potatoes go in. I will start again in late July with fall/winter vegetables, and will continue on again until May with the exception of December and most of January. I agree that in the far north, it's important to get the garlic in the ground in the fall. In the spring, it's usually too muddy to get into the garden and plant. As early as I ever dare venture into the garden in the spring, my garlic is always well on its way. Ideally, it's best to plant 4 weeks or so before the ground starts to freeze. Obviously, it's difficult to know ahead of time just when that will be. In Vermont, I once planted on Thanksgiving Day -- much later than I had intended to. It snowed the very next day and that was the last I saw of my garden until spring. My garlic came up just fine that season, possibly slightly smaller bulbs than usual, but I got a perfectly acceptable crop.

I just received some peonies Friday and put them in the ground yesterday. I would assume if the zone/timing is incorrect they will not ship them - that is if it is a reputable place. Or make sure they have a good replant policy if they don't make it you can try again next fall only earlier.

I remember starting from seeds later than this a couple years ago. I planted directly in my garden, and I didn't get nearly as many tomatoes as my neighbor, but I still think it was worth doing. And if you plant now, you'll probably be earlier than I was. But buying some seedlings sounds like a better way to go. That way you could be right on schedule. And you can always clone them to get more than one plant from each seedling, if cost is an issue. I may start a few more myself if I don't have enough of a particular variety, since I have a couple weeks until my planting date. And it'll take me a couple more weeks to get them all in the ground. But I'd rather do some cuttings since I'd probably only lose a couple weeks that way.

I finished planting our driveway just a few days ago. A couple of years ago while having a tree cut down sedum Brilliant was destroyed by a brace from the bucket truck. I stuck pieces in the ground in Mid October and they survived just fine.

Tri-color is a favorite stonecrop. Fuldaglut is much improved from Dragon's Blood. John Creech makes a thick mat. Golden sedum will crowd the others out.

I just clipped some from my yard, 3 kinds, to root and plant somewhere else.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I am planning to have an area of partially submerged rocks in a section of the garden where I will plant the sedum. I also have a lot of walkways/stepping stones/paths where sedum might look nice. I am doing a lot of searching to try and find photos of sedum used in the garden.
