Hi Everyone, I hope u all had a nice Mother's Day! Son and family came over here on Sunday and we had a nice time. Little Rose is soooo cute and is learning new words every day, I love having her around, she sure livens up the place. *S* While Rosie and her mom had a nap son and I went out and worked in the garden. It is so hard to get him over here that I take advantage when he is able to come over. Monday was a special pick up garbage day and we could throw everything out but cars and tires. So that meant a lot of clean was done in the yard. We pruned down a lot of branches off the Shurbert cherry tree and found out that it has some kind of disease. I think it is black knot, there is big black areas on different branches, that is sad and it is such a pretty tree. White flowers in spring, then the reddish leaves and red berries in the summer. We also took down some large branches on the crabapple so I could get under it to work without taking my head off. *L* Also took the wood from some of the old garden beds to the street and an old dwarf cranberry bush that I killed last year. Pulling that one out was the hardest and we had to stop after that. I will be planting hostas there after I fill up the big hole it left. Son kept telling me to go into the house, but I know it is easier with smeone helping u in the garden so I stayed out and helped him. I should of listened to him though as I have been in bed for the past two days. I thought I was doing ok, but I guess my heart and back have different ideas. I sure could do with a body replacement. *LOL* I transplanted a few tomatoes tonight into bigger containers and seeded some zucs, sunflowers and cukes. I will have to tranplant the buttercrunch lettuce tomorrow too, I'm late at getting that done. I am running out of space. I had to add another windowsill box on the north window just so I could put my tomatoes on the east window sill. I was hoping that May was going to be warm so I could start moving things into the porch, but it is 1C tonight and is suppose to be cold for the next few days. Gale, I'm glad u had a good time with the gals, but ya didn't say what kind of plants u bought... *S* I'm surprised that u still have ice and snow around your place too. I thought yours would of been gone before ours was. Does your pond have a liner in it? Or is it a natural pond? Am wondering how the fish survived in a pond with a liner? And u got tadpoles? Very kewl! My waterlilies are growing in the basement but son was too sore after pulling out that bush to put them into the pond, so they will just have to wati. I wish I could get the fish in the pond too, I am always scared I'm going to kill them if I put them in too early. Sure would make it easier having them in the pond. Gale, sounds like your greenhouse is working out great. Have u ever tried to get some old Culligan water bottles and fill those with water in the greenhouse? I bet ya they would hold in the heat well too. Hi kelly, did u buy any plants at the get together? What are SpringSow bottles? "We don't need a cart?" *LOL* Yeah right! I bet with the 3 of u, u could of used 2 carts. *L* Here are a few of my spring flowers, I hope the cold temps tonight didn't kill them. I can never remember what these are called, Star of Bethlehem pops into my head, but I don't know if that is right or not. I just think they are pretty. Hi It was another cool day here today but at least it was sunny and I wasn't wearing my winter coat like I was yesterday. Last night it went down to 6c and tonight it is only 7C. I was able to get out and get the new side garden covered in newspapers and landscaping fabric and anchored down. I will start planting it in the next few days depending on the weather. I cut down some of the roses as the leaves are such a mess, they are just awful and I don't know what is causing this. I don't know if it's white fly, black spot, the freezing temps we had after the leaves came out. Some of the roses don't have the papery leaves but most of them do. The new leaves on the roses seem to be ok, but when the first leaves came out on the roses they were ok too then went weird fast! This is what JP Connell looks like now Yuk! I put some white fly traps out around them tonight and I also sprayed them for disease and bugs so hopefully they will start looking better, of course they couldn't look much worse right now. It is the JP Connell, Winnipeg parks and Morden Blush that are the worse right now. I have a flower bud on my water lily so it will be so nice when it blooms. I only have the one now as I donated the other to the plant sale for the Horticultural Society. More of my lilies are also starting to bloom so that is nice. I don't have as many lilies as I did last year. I don't know if the chipmunk has found a new food sourse, or the winter was hard on them, or they still have not recovered from the contractor smashing and burying them. I love these Orange Pixies, they sure do make ya take notice. *S* Some of the lilies I thought I had sprayed with Round up last year are coming up in the new beds, even in the beds that are 20" tall. But they are only a couple of inches tall now by the time they get to the surface. LOL I have also been pulling out baby roses that I also sprayed with round up last year. I guess they are growing up from the roots. Here is a new pic of the beds that were built last year. The hostas still don't hide the wooden beds, but I figure in another year of two they will. Hi there Linda! So nice to hear from u again! Sounds like u are keeping yourself very busy! I have some evening primroses blooming in a pot! They overwintered there with a tulip. *L*I use to have a lot of them in the old rose bed, but since I redid it I pulled a lot of them up. None of my daylilies have started blooming yet, I keep waiting. I hope I will get more blooms from them this year. Marca, I'm sorry to hear your Dad is errr unable to do home repairs. Maybe your mom could help ya....*LOL* A dead snake under your front step? Maybe he was under it when the step cracked? It wasn't a poisonous one was it? Don't know if u have those up there. A wooden deck? LOL Well it would be nice if he did it this year. Seems like it would be a good size deck too. Some of my flowers didn't bloom long either. Like the regular lilacs and peonies. The lilacs hardly had any flowers on them and what they did have were little spindly things. Hi Dannie, 5 bucks is a very good price for a clematis. Hmm maybe I should go and check out our Canadian Tire. I have been wanting to go there and get some more patio chairs to spread around the yard so I'd have more places I can rest so that gives me more incentive to get over there. *S* I have a Nelly Moser that blooms in the backyard, but I never go back there, so I'm thinking I should dig it up and move it to the front yard where I can appreciate it more. That back wall is going to look so pretty with all those clematis growing up it. You will have to take a pic when they are blooming! Some people say that stomping on hostas is good for them. That they develop more eyes so they send out more shoots, the shoots will be smaller though. I haven't tried it yet for my hostas that are slow growers, but the way Tegan is getting around the yard now she might step on some. She almost got one tonight. *LOL* I have heard about cables being put on trees to hold the branches together, I bet u feel better knowing that it can't fall on your house now. How old is the sheltie? I bought one for my mom when I was about 17 and he was the smartest dog I ever owned, I should say mom owned, but he was still my dog. It was the only way I could get a dog,,was buy it for her as a gift, as she never returns presents. LOL What is a pleco? Sorry to hear about your ant troubles, is your hubs killing the hills at night time? He has to kill them at night time as during the day the ants are out gathering food. I have a recipe that worked on my ant problems, but it takes a couple of weeks. it is one part borax laundry powder soap 3 parts white sugar mix it up well and put a few spoonfuls in a covered container with a couple of holes in it, so that no kids or other animals or birds can get at it as it is poisonous. Place the container where u know the ants are and it will kill them as they take the poison back to the queen ant and feed it to the others too. Well time to get to bed here. Hi everyone! We are under a winter storm watch here. Suppose to get 20cm of snow and at 7pm Saturday night we were at -25c with a windchill of -40; now we are at -32C with a windchill of -47C!! Youch!We are also under a extreme cold advisory! Da do u think? LOL Got a email from my niece last night and she had to take my sister to the hospital. She had a heart attack. Pat had a stroke a few years ago too and has been living with my niece for the past few years. Apparently she had been getting chest pains, but didn't tell Jenny about it until it got very bad. She is in ICU but they won't do tests until Monday to find out how much and where the damage is. So prayers would be appreciated. I had to call mom and carefully tell her about Pat being in hospital, but I think she took it pretty good. Mom has high blood pressure and heart condition, it runs in the family so I was a bit worried. Pat's blood pressure was up over 200 and is still high, but it has come down a bit, hopefully the docs will adjust her meds to bring it down. Pat is doing better and wasn't on oxygen Saturday. her spirits are good! I have been busy baking baking baking. Made over 30 more butter tarts the other day,,,,tonight I made about 7 dozen of mocha chocolate cookies with walnuts in them....sooooooo good. I'm going to wrap some of them up and put them under the tree for son and g/f,,,,just another gift for them to open up. Son is suppose to come over tomorrow to help hubs shovel out the driveway, I asked him yesterday before we got the storm, so I timed that well. *LOL* He is also going to filet a nice big Lake Trout for dinner. He did one a week ago and it was sooooooo good. I can hardly wait! I have 5 more of them in the freezer too. *L* I don't think he will be able to shovel the driveway if it stays this cold,,,,too darn dangerous, but I'm hoping it will warm up! Here are a couple of Kris Kringles that son and hubs have bought me over the years And stockings we bought when son was about 3 years old. Marcia, have u gotten the floors done?
