Crazy Ivan is so vibrant and color contrast in the lily is so distinct! Love it! My very favorite shot of all was the last pic in this post of Land of Cotton and Wonder of Wonders with the daisies and balloon flowers fading into the darker background that also brightened and illuminated the flowers so well. A very well thought-out picture, and looks like it came from a magazine showing "favorite perennials". Great photography and pictures of the daylilies and perennials that have already been described with every superlative that I know of that is fitting to use, so I won't even try to search out another that fits!!! The title of the post says it all! LOL Jan G.

jterrilynn - " We always feel like we lost our puppy or something" I have two boys and that's how I feel when a girlfriend is gone. My eldest son went out with a girl for two years and everyone really like her. When they broke up his cousins asked him if they could keep her and get rid of him. :) Back to topic- When above son was in high school he was part of a group of kids who were/are good kids - smart, responsible nice kids. They weren't the in-kids or the jocks but they were the kids who accepted the nerds and the new kids - the social group where parents wanted their own kids to be a part of in school. They weren't perfect but the silly things they did never overshadowed their reputation. In first year college he met a new male friend and started hanging out with him. I think there was some thrill to hanging out with this kid.This kid didn't have a good reputation (drugs were the issue) and that's how I approached the problem. Instead of forbidding him from seeing this new "friend" I talked to him about reputations and labels. My son (and his friends) had a good label and this boy did not. I explained how easy it is to go from a "good" label to a "bad" label or reputation and how so very difficult it is to get back that reputation. I explained that even though he may not do anything wrong the bad label is easily transferred. People like to talk about the bad kids but seldom about the good kids because that isn't tantalizing or scintillating gossip. I explained about the purpose of gossip and how stories can get exaggerated and with the advent of texting and tweeting how quickly things can spread. So I asked him what kind of a label did he want for himself and what kind of a reputation did he and his friends want for themselves - for now and for the future. My son chose to get rid of this kid but I think it was hard for him but he had goals and figured out that being involved with this kid could hamper those goals. Selfishly, I also told him that I didn't want this kid and his reputation to hamper my reputation. As my son's mother I could get dragged into the gossip as well. ( what was she thinking allowing DS1 to hang out with that kid, etc) I just explained that he would eventually be moving out of the neighbourhood and I wouldn't be.

I think Ashley has zeroed in on the essence of the issue: an opportunity to teach a lesson about 'hearsay', or 'gossip', as opposed to eavesdropping. In reading all the responses that go back & forth on trying to determine exactly what constitutes 'eavesdropping' or who should be blamed, I agree that it's a very ambiguous issue. We all, as fully grown adults, basically 'know' when we're straining to overhear something, and even if it's technically 'wrong', we all know we *sometimes* do it anyway. Or we *have* done it, at least once, even as fully-grown adults. So it's really hard to guarantee that you will be able to do anything to 100% fully prevent a kid from listening in... especially if you have a conversation where you know he's around and could possibly walk in at any second or perhaps overhear. So I agree that in Ceph's case, it wasn't really anyone's fault ---neither Ceph for not fully realizing at that moment how utterly fascinating & tantalizing adult discussions can be to a kid or A____ for being a curious kid--- but that adults should be a bit more careful, and kids should have it explained to them that they may at times overhear things out of context that they are best not to repeat because they can accidentally distort the truth and end up really hurting someone without meaning to. And that they wouldn't like it one little bit if the tables were turned and it happened to them! Maybe make up a hypothetical scenario, using some humorously exaggerated details, wherein A_____ becomes the unfortunate victim of an unchecked rumor spread by mis-heard hearsay. Like for example: "A_____, let's say after I dropped you off one morning at school I *just so happened* to overhear some very cute girls saying 'A____ looks like such a STEAMBOAT in his red-and-white sweater!" And then what if I told some other kids, and soon everyone at school thought that? Then what if I much later found out that those girls had REALLY said "A_____ looks like such a DREAMBOAT in his red-and-white sweater!"? Wouldn't YOU prefer that I'd made sure I'd checked with the girls before I told a bunch of other people that you resemble a big, slow, square-ish BOAT?" So that he gets the point but in a non-harsh way and you both can giggle about it at the end.

Everyone should have Tangerine Horses ... it blooms all summer, and is an extremely reliable rebloomer.

Pam - I really wish you would slow down on posting subsequent letters. A lot of us have been working in our gardens and are having trouble catching up. On other forums where we did this, we had only two to three letters a week to get us through the winter. Just a request.

I've not been paying much attention to the letters....too many too fast! But I am glad I looked in on this one.

Debra, wow, how often does THAT VOODOO poly for you? I'd love for it to do that in my garden!

floota, how long have you been growing TEXAS KALEIDOSCOPE? I've heard much about its hardiness...or lack of it I should say, and I'm trying to figure out ahead of this coming winter what to do with some of its kids, which I have. You're much warmer than me up here, I'm certain....

and that Eric Murphy intro....oh me oh my! Does it really have that much green to it? I am NOT buying yellows or oranges any more, unless they are special and distinctive in some way. Problem is, each buying season, I've found plenty that too easily fit that criterion. Happily, I see from the Woodhenge catalog that TAKE A WALK is currently a display plant only....I am saved!

...of course, that doesn't mean I can't get TIGER BY THE TAIL. I've already placed my order with Don, but orders are meant to be added to, aren't they? floota, do you grow ADORABLE TIGER and, if yes, how would you compare the two plants?

If anyone's interested, I can list some of my T's here. I know, how boring a mere list is. :)

Lynxe - I only remember a couple of polys on THAT VOODOO. This was the first season for it to bloom, so I don't know how often it would do that normally. I had a lot more daylilies that never poly do it last season. I think it had something to do extremely hot weather followed by extremely cool weather.

Re: TAKE A WALK - I've seen it at Woodhenge and took that picture at Steve Horan's garden. It wasn't color enhanched. That's how it looks to me.

Re: TEXAS KALEIDOSCOPE: Don't know hardiness, have the even prettier COSMIC KALEIDOSCOPE on order for spring. Will see how it does and let you know. Most of JC's plants are OK here, just a couple are tender. Would surely like to be able to grow these, as they're wonderful.

Re: TIGER BY THE TAIL: It was new from Don this spring. Too early to tell much yet. Don says it is a hardier version of one of its parents, ADORABLE TIGER.I do grow ADORABLE TIGER, and although no one could argue w/ its distinctiveness, it certainly isn't the most vigorous plant here. I've put TIGER BY THE TAIL in a prime spot,so it should be able to show off next year.

TANI was not happy this season. Not sure if it always does this here or if it was the result of hail, cool weather, thrips, or something else

I've waited 2 years to see TELL ABOUT IT bloom. Every flower was large & perfect but it was very short (maybe 8"?) & there were not many of them

I'm not entirely sure TIANANMEN SQUARE is labeled correctly. Garden records show it was planted next to FARMER'S DAUGHTER at one time and this kind of looks like that one too.

TIERED BRONZE was lovely all season. A gift from another daylily friend.

TUSCAWILLA BLACKOUT is a great performer here. It was prolific bloomer even though I divided & moved it this spring.

TUSCAWILLA PRINCESS is also a fantastic performer in this climate.
