Thursday's Tantalizing Treasures

I've enjoyed the instant rebloom that starts while the original scapes are still flowering. It makes for fuller, more floriferous clumps.

I REMEMBER YOU today with a combination of original and rebloom flowers.

VISION OF GLORY has one rebloom scape starting as the others finish. This one has been very splotchy this year. These are the best blooms, and they are not as good as I would like.

BARACUDA BAY also had a rebloom scape blooming with the originals today.

Oh, they all look wonderful. I was all set to pick CRIMSON EDGINGS out of the first batch as favorite when I saw that you had added more. So it will be my pick of that first batch. Now you KNOW what I pick as my favorite from the second batch and my all round favorite - RUBY LIPSTICK!!!

Mine is blooming but it doesn't look anywhere near as nice as yours. One thing that I love is the promounced green throat and the very defined red eyering with that triangular shape. Mine doesnt show that :-((

I also love SWEET CHILD OF MINE, so pretty.

I love the kittens! They are totally worth the time and trouble of taming. This is Mama Cat, my co-gardener, my controller of creatures that eat my plants. She was a feral kitten. It took a while and good food, but she is now the "resident sleeper in the house a lot of nights, and on garden patrol in the daytime". I love Buzz Saw. It is a hard job to pick just one favorite out of these beauties. You cannot go wrong with Emmerich. No one's introduction do better or bloom more for me. I am not supposed to need anything this year, but I'm getting 6 from Karol. I also love the lovely "eyed" beauties of Robert Lee Batts that you posted, and Acquire the Fire. And the Emmerich is to die for. Ah well. kay

I've not been paying much attention to the letters....too many too fast! But I am glad I looked in on this one. Debra, wow, how often does THAT VOODOO poly for you? I'd love for it to do that in my garden! floota, how long have you been growing TEXAS KALEIDOSCOPE? I've heard much about its hardiness...or lack of it I should say, and I'm trying to figure out ahead of this coming winter what to do with some of its kids, which I have. You're much warmer than me up here, I'm certain.... and that Eric Murphy intro....oh me oh my! Does it really have that much green to it? I am NOT buying yellows or oranges any more, unless they are special and distinctive in some way. Problem is, each buying season, I've found plenty that too easily fit that criterion. Happily, I see from the Woodhenge catalog that TAKE A WALK is currently a display plant only....I am saved! ...of course, that doesn't mean I can't get TIGER BY THE TAIL. I've already placed my order with Don, but orders are meant to be added to, aren't they? floota, do you grow ADORABLE TIGER and, if yes, how would you compare the two plants? If anyone's interested, I can list some of my T's here. I know, how boring a mere list is. :)

Hi Hester! Hadn't seen you posting in a while. I haven't been around a lot either, so maybe it was me. I missed the sale this year. Sounds like you got some cool stuff. Congrats. My wonderful, treasure packed parcel arrived from Annie this AM. There were two candy bars with a note that sharing was optional. Since Jack is taking me for a steak dinner tonight, I thought I could spare him some Chocolate. It is Yummy dark Chocolate with almonds and sea salt. Never tried this before but love it! A pretty kitchen towel with a chili pepper design, A packet with reblooming iris. A first time item that I look forward to seeing for years.. A nice big chunk of a NOID daylily. I love em all and enjoy surprises. I'll plant this and label it as "Annie".... also my Mother's name.. I got a micro planer, something I have thought I wanted/needed several times but never remembered to buy. So, That is a big plus for that item. In the bottom of the bag I could hear/ feel something I expected to be hard candies...... but Ahah.......It was more REAL treasure. Some coins and a lot of shiny pebble shaped marbles. These will become part of my planned Fairy village. Not sure yet how I'll use them but they have lots of possibilities . Such fun AND I'm going to the Master Gardeners Spring Plant Sale tomorrow. I want to see how far I can stretch the coins at the sale. Annie this package is SUPER and I'm enjoying all the adventure of a treasure hunt with the goodies you sent. Many many thanks.

I still have a hard time with the concept of your flowers reblooming now when I haven't even gotten into full swing with my earlies yet! You have such a nice collection. Barracuda Bay looks great with the gloriosa behind it... fantastic combo! My favorite of the group is Crazy Ivan... I love it every time I see it, and can't get over the purity of the colors and just adore the glowing throat.

Debra, Crimson Edgings is my pick for the first although, I remember You is very pretty. Ruby Lipstick is beautiful but I like Sweet Child Of Mine is my pick for the second post. You have some beauties still blooming!! Ellie

Debra- I don't think it has any damage. It just doesn't look as good as yours. It probably needs to settle in some more, even though it was planted last fall. I am sure more rain would have helped too. Here's a picture of mine.

RUBY LIPSTICK. You can see the red eye zone is not as clearly defined as yours, mine sort of bleeds at the edges. Plus its not showing as trianglar. If you compair my picture to yours it is hard to believe they are both the same cultivar. I hope it shapes up and starts looking like yours.

Rita - Thanks for posting your photo. Your Ruby Lipstick probably does need more time to settle in. Mine didn't bloom at all the first two years I had it. If it hasn't rained recently, more water might help define the eye zone and get it looking more ruffly.

Julie - It's hard for me to grasp the ideas that yours have barely started, but it's all about the weather and the zones. Crazy Ivan is a wonderful cultivar with beautiful flowers and a husky, vigorous plant under them. I'm pretty happy with the way Baracuda Bay and the gloriosa daisies look together. I can't take credit for it though. The daisies self seeded.

For those of you who picked Crimson Edgings as your favorite, it has performed well in its first season. It's a great pod setter, despite the high temperatures. And I love the instant rebloom. What you have to understand is my first scapes were actually rebloom scapes because Floyd Cove cut the scapes off before shipping.

Ellie and Julia - Sweet Child of Mine is a Nan Wilkerson cultivar with a bright, cheerful color and lots of blooms. I was hoping to use it as a parent, but it hasn't set a pod in two years. So far, no rebloom on that one.

WOW Debra, you really have some pretty lilies. I really, really like Crazy Ivan, Magnificent Hummingbird, Sweet Child of Mine & Ruby Lipstick. Crimson Edges & Divine Promise are sooooo delicate looking. I love them too! I noticed a few of mine have some rebloom scapes coming up. yay!! You know I was telling you about me cutting some back that looked ratty and I realized the ones I cut back so far weren't putting any new scapes up yet but the ones I hadn't cut back yet were putting out new ones and they are all the same kind, Happy Returns. I bought alot of those one year to plant in a mass planting and needless to say I have seperated them in several different spots now. Not sure if the other batch would have put up some new scapes already if I hadn't cut them back because they were alot worse looking than the batch that is putting up scapes. Well now, that took a while to say. lol! Take care, Judy

Can't think of any more superlatives for your fabulous pictures. They are always beautiful. Hard to choose from this group, but I think my favorites are I Remember You and Ruby Lipstick.

It looks like peak bloom for you with all that rebloom. I Remember You and Ruby Lipstick are must-haves. I think I've said that every time you've posted photos of those two, but at least I'm consistent.

Well I knew I would see breathtaking shots in this post! The deer damaged I REMEMBER YOU so badly, I guess I've lost it :( Thank goodness my fences are keeping them out now! My vote goes to SWEET CHILD OF MINE, I love Nan Wilkerson cultivars, they have always done well for me here and they are SO PRETTY!

I'm going with a lot of others on favorites. Crimson Edgings, Ruby Lipstick and Sweet Child Of Mine are the ones that just took my breath away!

the group shots of I Remember You and Ruby Lipstick are so enabling. Divine Promise reminds me of Siloam Ralph Henry. Very nice.

Great photos, and so many beautiful flowers! How can people pick only one or two? :) I especially like Crimson Endgins, Crazy Ivan and Natalie Antoinette from the first post, and Ruby Lipstick, Rosy Rhino, Divine Promise and Sugar Magnolia from the second. Oh, and I like the title of the post too!

I can see the parentage of LADY NEVA in NUCLEAR MELTDOWN. I actually thought it was LN until I looked it up.

I have to say though, that CRAZY IVAN is my favorite. These are all gorgeous photographs!!

Nat4B - I think everyone should have as many favorites as the want. I always pick more than one favorite. I just have to when there are so many pretty ones. Thanks for the compliment on the title of the post!

Vickie - I don't grow Lady Neva but I imagine Nuclear Meltdown gets a lot of its looks from her.

I Remember You was my favorite, just because the clump was so full of bloom. It had nine blooms but they were so spread out, I couldn't get them all in the frame. That one is my #1 performer for this season.

Crazy Ivan is so vibrant and color contrast in the lily is so distinct! Love it! My very favorite shot of all was the last pic in this post of Land of Cotton and Wonder of Wonders with the daisies and balloon flowers fading into the darker background that also brightened and illuminated the flowers so well. A very well thought-out picture, and looks like it came from a magazine showing "favorite perennials". Great photography and pictures of the daylilies and perennials that have already been described with every superlative that I know of that is fitting to use, so I won't even try to search out another that fits!!! The title of the post says it all! LOL Jan G.
