Tantalizing Tidbits for Tuesday (photos)

Big doings in the backyard today. A stray cat we've dubbed "Tux" because she is black and white moved her two kittens under our barn today. They look to be about 5-6 weeks old. Of course, we had to feed them. They are wild and afraid of us, but think the food is pretty good.

Now on to the best blooms of the morning.

WARRIOR VICTORIOUS, a Jack Carpenter beauty, finally had a decent bloom. This one got hit hard early by thrips and is just blooming buds that were not attacked.

OPEN DOOR is my only Emmerich, but it's done so well, I know I will add more.

NATALIE ANTOINETTE is strutting her stuff on a short rebloom scape.

SPACECOAST SHARP TOOTH is reblooming too!

BUZZ SAW's edge is buzzing along again today. This one opens slowly in the mornings.

Yep, definitely couldn't ignore those cute little furries! Good food and a bit of patience goes a long way in winning a kitty heart, and ridding the area of pesky rodents!

How does WIREGRASS GREENSTAR perform for you? You are the only other person I have seen post it. I just love it, although it is not a bloom machine in my garden. I moved mine this year to a little sunnier spot and will see if that makes a difference. Will never get rid of it because I just love the coloring.

OPEN DOOR is my favorite of the group I think.

Yes, I'm still alive. Life has just been crazy these days. That's a really cool U/S pic! I don't think I've ever seen one with that much clarity and detail. What a beautiful little sweetheart. Good luck for Monday, Gil. My middle son shares his birthday with my DH and he was born on DH's 30th. I've got a picture taken in the hospital of him holding the baby with a cake in front of them. My MIL could not figure out why I wanted her to pick up 2 "zeros" and 1 "three" for candles. I placed them so it read "30" and "0" on the cake. One of those very special Kodak moments in our family. I envy all of you now in this digital camera age. It used to be such a pain to go get film and get them developed. My youngest son doesn't have near enough pictures taken of him as he was growing up. What a treat to be able to take them instantly and to get so many "perfect" and candid shots all of the time. Wow. Am I showing my age!! Shauna

Judy--there is a Tampa chapter of the AMerican Begonia Society. They had their first judged begonia show in late February if I recall right. Marcia--the word "dignified" is the level of respect and development of horticultural endeavors. Comparatively speaking, there is much less experience with plants and/or maintenance issues with landscaping companies and their employees (illegal workers is yet another issue)...and,the quality of programming and other aspects of local botanical gardens is one that combines visitor needs with education and display and overall non-profit health. I have not encountered so much scoffing at "gardening" than in FL while mixing with people at various events--it's as if horticulture is equated with only rich people and then, only a subclass would dare to do it for them. I've also read of many city-governemnt based initiatives that seem to sound "groundbreaking" or "modern advances" that are off the mark (Port St. Lucie in particular!) It's like they are given a brochure and they buy a program or idea and have no grasp of hte context for its use. Perhaps another interesting observation is how belligerent many people are to the whole water restriction thing in south FLorida (is it same elsewhere?). Darn near EVERYONE has an excuse (placing blame on the water district, not me, I don't wanna, catch me if you can, blah blah). I have experienced droughts in other regions with same enforced restirctions and all, and in FLorida I've seen a lot of arrogance and indifference, even with governments. This holds true to a lot of professionals that give misleading info publicly about info that tends to blatantly undermine known facts about what plants need more water, when to water and how much. In a nutshell, there is less overall population that holds high regard or dignity with a passion of horticulture and the closely related good land stewardship and good (proven) maintenance practices. Go to other regions (more like regional pockets), and nearly everyone looks to a single botanical garden source as the leader or as a world-class example of a organization, etc. Or, all understand the need for say, shade trees, or drought-tolerant plants and thus it is easier to locate these plants in nurseries. Lots of things comparatively speaking make FL such a drought for the horticultural passion that dominates other areas of the US and Canada. "landscaping (horticulture)" is a business in FLorida, not a passion or lifestyle across the board.

Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. I wanted to explore more cooking and food shops/stores but didnt get to. Terri, here is more a link to Pictures of England, a website pointed out to me by Denise. I started it on Bourton on the Water, where we stayed for a few days. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. Me, I just buy the post cards or Google the images, same thing (DARFC from the photo bugs here) Cathy, thanks for giving me the War and Peace moniker heh heh. Next time I go with CF friends! Love the kittens - maybe they'll warm up to you over time. The flowers are great, especially 'Acquire the Fire' and 'Wiregrass Greenstar.' I've liked WG ever since I first started looking at daylilies - does anyone know how it fares up north?

Julie - I have Wiregrass Greenstar planted in part-shade. It only gets 4 hours of direct sun a day here. It has a bud count this year of 9-11. I'm sure it would do much better in full sun. I like it a lot, and it's a great pod setter.

Well, I thought I had picked my favorite daylily when I saw your first one, but they just kept coming & I can make up my mind. So I'll pick the kittens :)

Your OPEN DOOR looks great. I have no idea why mine is so ugly this year. Blooms not opening all the way, over ruffling on the edges which makes them look distorted. I've had 4 openings already and they are miserable. Last year they looked great.

I like WIREGRASS GREENSTAR. Something about the colors.

I bet you food is the way to the little kitties heart. They are cuties. Really love the picture of the ROBERT LEE BATT'S trio, very nice shot. But my favorite here today is ACQUIRE THE FIRE it just glows and does look like its on fire. So well named.

Warrior Victorious is my pick, and I mean enough of a pick that it goes on the very selective wish list.

The kittens are adorable. We have eight (and it's NOT because I'm a crazy cat lady). My favorite is a kitten (Cheese Man) that was wild when it came to us. Now he won't leave my side. He hasn't lost his wild streak, though. A bat got into our house a couple weeks ago, and Cheeseman caught it out of mid-air.

Keep us posted on how friendly they become!

Ive got kids coming out of both of them.. hopefully it passes on some traits!

I like the eye on Robert Lee Batts too!! It's really green and the watermark is nice..Yay for watermarks..Open Door is pretty and I love Crazy Ivan. Natalie Antoinette gets my vote from this bunch.. Love that pink....Ellie

I love the kittens! They are totally worth the time and trouble of taming. This is Mama Cat, my co-gardener, my controller of creatures that eat my plants. She was a feral kitten. It took a while and good food, but she is now the "resident sleeper in the house a lot of nights, and on garden patrol in the daytime".

I love Buzz Saw. It is a hard job to pick just one favorite out of these beauties. You cannot go wrong with Emmerich. No one's introduction do better or bloom more for me. I am not supposed to need anything this year, but I'm getting 6 from Karol.

I also love the lovely "eyed" beauties of Robert Lee Batts that you posted, and Acquire the Fire. And the Emmerich is to die for. Ah well.

Kay - Your kittie has good camouflage colors! Now there are FOUR kittens under my barn. I hope Tux doesn't have more. I was fine with two. But I'm a little uncertain about four or more. My white manx who was my garden companion died last year after 14 years of being my shadow.

Love them all, but my favorites are Warrior Victorious and Wiregrass Greenstar. The kittens are adorable. It's so hard to replace a pet. Especially when they were with you for so many years. I'm sure these will come around with time and you'll have a new buddy.

AWWW those little kitties are SO CUTE! I'm looking to replace my long lost furry fellow after losing him last year. Buzz Saw does take its time opening in the morning here as well. My fave daylily in this grouping is ORCHID VISITATION, BEAUTIFUL!
