cut them all off ... ????? well.. hosta come up on stored energy in the spring ... now is root growing time.. where the energy will be stored ... cut off ALL the leaves.. and you have no energy making machines.. PLUS you are spending energy to reflush .... so.. i would not cut them to the ground ... but i would not hesitate to snip 3 to 5 of the worst off.. you might be surprised how much better they look ... or better yet... just grab down in there and tug them out.. avoiding the whole sterilization of tools thingee ... all that said .... as undulatas ... they would probably thrive if you dug them up and threw them on the driveway until replating in next spring ... so do what ever you want ... the best thing.. since you have more than one.. is to experiment .... leave some alone .. cut a few to the ground and see if the reflush.. and on some be selective in what you pull out regardless of what you think ... this was caused by lack of water.. and too much sun .... move them and reduce sun.. or increase water .... ken

I doubt you have a disease per se - plant diseases tend to be rather specific to individual plants rather than widespread throughout a garden. For example, rhododendron problems generally will not affect laurels, madrone diseases are not common to magnolias, etc. And ivy is virtually disease-free!! It is far more likely that there is some deficiency or other problem with the soil itself. Poor drainage, chemical contamination, excessive compaction, lack of fertility - any of these can create sufficient stress in otherwise healthy plants so that they perform poorly, display off-color foliage and/or become susceptible to insects or common fungal issues that are secondary to the primary problem. Do any of these things srike a chord? Have you had a soil test done? Anything different with the garden beginning late last year - a different type of mulch used, a spraying service, perhaps the use of weed 'n feed products on your lawn, neighbors using pesticides, construction activity that could disturb roots or alter drainage? Unfortunately, soil issues are not easily diagnosed just from photographs, although may provide some indication. You might be better served by hiring a consultant to view your garden personally and evaluate the situation. A local nursery may have a CPH on staff that could offer such a service or direct you to someone with these qualifications or you could inquire at your local extension office. Feel free to email me the photos if you like (email address on member page) and I'll give it my best shot, but based on what you describe, I truly think a personal, onsite evaluation is your best bet for getting to the root (no pun intended!) of the problem.

first.. either your camera is way off color.. or that is some weird nail polish.. lol .. newbie eh??? forget about mildew.. you are way off course ... you grew them indoors... there.. they are leggy.. not enough light ... now the real trick.. when taking things outdoors..is taking them from low light to high levels of light.. its called hardening them off ... which you need to do to both light and temp ... i think you just burned them a bit when they went outside .. simply snip off all the bad leaves.. the real key for me.. are the new growth points.. which have acclimated .. and look fine .. impatiens take to a good cutting back ... track back down the tallest uprights..and at a leaf node ...where a leaf is attached to the stem.. if you look really close.. you will see a bud.. cut 1/4 inch above.. and that bud will trigger.. and you will start rejuvenating it into a more compact plant.. if you do it with a razor blade.. the cut pieces can be rooted rather easily ... by sticking them in some damp media.. and putting them in a palstic bag for a little greenhouse for a week or two ... do at least the tallest two.. and give it a week.. observe ... it if does as i predicted.. become a little more aggressive .... finally.. you are not considered a real gardener.. until you have killed every plant 3 times... so forget about failing.. and do be proud.. that you grew them from seed indoors.. and have gotten them as far as you have ... two thumbs up... though i dont have orange thumb nails.. lol ... ken

They probably have early blight. It works from the bottom then up the plant. The time to treat it is earlier in the season either before you see the problem or at least right away. And then you need to spray regularly. A lot of us don't want to use sprays and just don't. Farmers will continue to spray fungicides now but it is not recommended for the home gardener because to won't be very effective. It happens to all of us at some time or another. Fungus spreads from the soil, by wind and by wetness. After you harvest all you can, throw the plants and debris in the garbage. Plant tomatoes in a different area next year.
