Roses move pretty much like any other perennial, just fine. So it shouldn't be any problem for you. It depends on how long you think you're going to have them out of the bed for revamping whether you want to pot them or plant them. If you feel it will only be a short time and before the high heat of summer sets in then you can go ahead and pot them up short term. If it's going to take a good part of the summer then I'd plant them in the holding bed until next spring. I've grown roses in pots as permanent places and I've moved roses in July when it was very hot and they've survived fine but those aren't the best of conditions. Prepare the new holes before you dig them out. If the rose is very large or very tall you can prune it back some before moving it so it will be easier to handle. Try to dig as much root ball as you can and disturb it as little as possible. You can put it in a wheel barrow or on a tarp to drag it if it's very large and heavy. Get it planted into it's new place quickly and keep it well watered but not soggy and don't fertilize it for the first week or so until you begin to see new growth. Then you can go to a regular feeding and watering schedule. When you replant them into the finished bed you do the same thing. If you decide to pot them get big pots, make sure there are lots of drainage holes in them and take off any trays that are on the bottom of the pots. Only use good quality potting soil, not garden soil, in the pots. Regular dirt is too heavy and will not drain properly in a pot. Which means you'll have to pretty much bare root the roses. Do this by digging out the root ball and then very gently rinsing them with a hose until most of the soil is gone and then potting them up. Then do the same thing as with the ground planted ones, keep watered and wait to see new growth before fertilizing. If you are going to use anykind of herbicide on those weeds and grasses I'd plant them and wait until next year to put them back so that the herbicide is completely gone from that new bed. Herbicides do nasty things to roses. Good luck and I look forward to seeing pictures of your new beds and beautiful roses!

I plan on having a 'work day' this weekend if the weather holds as promised. I will pick up the wood for framing the raised bed tonight or tomorrow, already have the dirt at home, just waiting for the 10 day Roundup clearance to end. I am only putting smaller flowers (16-26") up along the front walk in raised beds. Once I move them up to the front, I can plant the new taller ones in the older beds. I like Todd Monroe and have been trying to decide if it or Siloam Shocker will go. They look too much alike and I have limited room. I think Todd will win as it is a rebloomer. I had a seedling I meant to evict, but forgot to mark which of two plants it was-and I don't want to toss the wrong one, so it may end up there until next year. Other evictions/overgrowns are going out to the holding bed at Dad's for next years spring plant sale-that's where I get my flower money! Once I get that done, I am hoping to have one segment of the back bed cleared so I can add things to the soil as it is full of clay there and the daylilies aren't fond of it. Then in the spring, I can cross things from the other side of the back bed and amend that side of the bed. Will probably drive husband crazy by then. :)

I looked in on the day lily forum to enquire if it to late to move day lilies. I am just outside of Toronto A little further north made up a new bed a very large bed earlier in the summer Have been moving things into it off and on, sort of when they finish blooming Yet have many daylilies to move Was thinking it is to late and I would leave them til next year, but this note might indicate, it is not. Would like to get the job finished this year Thanks for any opinions

The advice above is good. Bareroot daylilies are much more likely to rot if the soil is wet and cold when planted (ditto wet and hot!). You don't say where in OR you are going and the difference in microclimates can be substantial. Daylilies can be stored dry for a few months. For easy I would trim the tops down to 1" - 2" and the roots the same. Keep them dry and cool with air circulation. Plant them when the soil temperatures reach 55 degrees or higher and they will be fine. I've watched people lay them on the sidewalk in full sun in the summer to dry them out completely before replanting them. I've kept them dry and bareroot in the summer and in the winter for one month to 4 months and they grew just fine. I've also kept them wet for a month in the summer and they got all slimy and stinky but grew just fine. Dry works just as well and is easier. Just don't forget about them - check on them every 10 - 14 days. Be sure to keep them cool but above freezing
