Mulching areas where I'm starting from seed?

This weekend, I planted out a fair bit of my Fall raised bed veggie garden. I'm trying out a few new things, including growing my tomatoes in containers rather than in the beds.

This year, I've got a lot more area where I'm sowing seeds directly into the ground, rather than transplanting seedlings from inside the house. Probably about a third of my garden is given over to plantings of various beans, cucumbers, and lettuces.

I'm not sure, though, whether I'm supposed to mulch these areas. I put down a thick bed of straw as a mulch around my transplants - but I can't see the young seedlings being able to push through it any more than the weeds can. On the other hand, that exposed dirt is going to bake and dry out on a sunny day. I feel like I should be doing something.

What's the recommended approach?
