Scapes! Scapes!

Well, I figgured I was not going to be seeing any more daylilies blooming here much this year as its so late. But I do have bloom a scape on LAVA FLOW, which opened its first flower for me yesterday and on STORM OVER TOLEDO, which bloomed on double blooms yesterday. I managed to miss seeing the blooms on STORM OVER TOLEDO and only realized it had bloomed as I saw the dead flowers today. Drats! Kicked myself for missing those first flowers. I didn't miss LAVA FLOW (Frank Smith 2006) though and it sure is a stunner of a flower.

SEDONA and WILD CHERRY ROUNDUP both have flowers open again today but only a bud or two left. I really absolutely love WILD CHERRY ROUNDUP.

Then I discovered a big scape on LONDON CALLING and a smaller, less mature scape on SO MANY STARS, neither of which I had noticed before. Beats me how thats possible as I go peer at everything in my garden at least twice a day most days! I got both of those earlier in the year from Gary Colby on the Lily Auction (thanks Gary, all daylilies growing great!) as well as LAVA FLOW much later in the year.

One of my two plants of NIGHT RYTHMS also has a scape so there should still be some flowers to be seen this year. Hurray!

Oh my gosh. That is wonderful. OKTOBERFEST is a strong grower and great bloomer, a wonderful daylily that I also got from Maryotts afew years ago.

No Rebloom On Long Island

Yesrterday I wrote a long post to the AHS e-mail robin about my Dalily Madness and one of the things I was talking about was that I am now going for August bloomers to take away the dead spot between regular bloom time in July and when ever rebloom comes. One of our local club members, also a member of the robin, wrote me back privately and told me that if I do not have rebloom scapes showing by now then thats it, I will not be getting them. He grows about 800 different daylilies, all fancy southern flowers and many of the newest and fanciest. He said he had had his rebloom already and it was about done too. Now that would go with some I had like PRETTY GAUDY and WISEST OF WIZARDS which rebloomed really quickly, instant rebloom. But if a daylily needs to rest before sending up rebloom scapes, there has not been that much time passed between end of bloom here. So I find this very confusing. I guess I want the rebloom so badly that I just will not accept no rebloom until its too late in the year :-(( Plus I have not even had rebloom yet on most of my instant rebloomers. They are new this year and did bloom so they might need to settle in or they might bloom later. I also have lots of rebloomers from Karoll Emmerich and Don Herr this spring. One from Karol is reblooming so far. I don't believe this means that the others will not. Or possibly they might not this first year. This rebloom thing is so confusing and of course I am obsessed with it and obsessed with my daylilies. So what else is new?

Exotic Star with 3 buds per scape!

My very first Exotic Star from about 2009 had 3 scapes each with 4 flowers!! Never again though, I usually only get 2 flowers these days, occasionally 3. I've also found that the newer Exotic Stars seem to be less pink (or is it my imagination?) than my first bulb. I only have two offsets left from that prize bulb, sacrificed to the NBF. the heat and humidity has been horrid here, too. I went out this morning and watered everything, then been in most of the day since then. My daughter came mid afternoon and she watered some of it again, as it was wilting b then in this heat.I wen out to visit wither a few minute and hep water again, but, she was fussing for me to get back inside,100 is too hot for me to be outside,she said and I sure agreed and came back in.Debra, the thing that ate the seedling bed is a beauty and that red Apache War Dance is a beauty, too. don't stay out in that heat too long as it can get you before you know it.

Pooh. I had a scape on a new Lava Flow but I cut it off so the plant could have all it's strength to establish and survive the winter. I'm hoping it will bloom for sure next spring now.

Good for you! I have a few scapes working on blooming too.So good to see when you think it is all over.We had frost,but I covered them and they look good.Supposed to be 80 by the end of the week.Go figure.If they make it I will post pics unless they are pathetic!lol

I agree with the others - I want pictures!

I've been amazed to see scapes coming up on some of my DLs too. My Stella and Black-Eyed Stella just put up rebloom scapes, and Indian Giver recently put up two rebloom scapes as well. That plant has been amazing. I purchased it in a pot in early July and didn't get it in the ground until the end of July, but it's been blooming almost non-stop since I brought it home. I cut off the last two scapes hoping it would focus it's strength on increasing and making it through the winter, especially since the moles got to it and ate most of the leaves, but I am expecting great things from it next year.

Lava Flow finished all its blooms and so did Night Rythms and Storm Over Toledo.

London Calling has blooming and a very goreous ruffly large flower. Love it. Tic Tac Toe has also been blooming with lots of scapes and lots of flowers. I love this one too but for different reasons. I love the flower but its smaller and I think the claim to fame will be for mass effect with lots of bloom.

So Many Stars has not started yet. But what really surprises me is that I am finding scapes coming up all over the place on many of the new ones. I mean who expects to see scapes coming up in October? But I have been mulching so get closer than just a pass thru the garden and see those scapes coming up.

Ha! So Many Stars has its first bloom open. Yesterday we had strong rain but today its cool and sunny but very windy. I can see that So Many Stars is going to be a stunner in a clump. Really glad I got this one even though the flower form is different my my usual very full round types.

Rita, I've been very happy with the performance of SMS. It has a lot of blooms over a long period. Since you don't have many this shape, it should really stand out in your garden. I think you will enjoy it. I moved it this fall and put it between 2 clumps of BELA LUGOSI. I'm hoping it will be a nice contrast.

I have no scapes (at least, not yet - I'm beginning to think anything may happen), but I have had two DLs come out of what I understand is called "summer dormancy" about 3 weeks ago. I have 3 in pots - the one that is semi-evergreen bloomed a bit in late spring. Another (a Dormant type)gave me one bloom, and the third (also a Dormant type) gave me NONE. I don't hold it against them, as I ordered them from Vermont, and I think moving to Central California was too much for them. I had great hopes for next Spring, though - but now I just don't know. If they went into dormancy in the summer and came out of it in early Fall, what will happen this Winter? Let alone next Spring! They look healthy, and in fact all of them have new fans coming up. But I'm worried that all this unexpected behavior means they will be so out of sync with the seasons that they won't be able to cope with the winter weather (we are supposed to have a milder Winter than last year, but I'm not counting on it, and last Winter was a killer!) Can anyone enlighten me on this? I'm just a rank beginner...
