Got Eyes?

Sorry, there's probably already several similar posts on the forum right now, but I'm just dropping by, and in a hurry......

Montana a. eager beaver as usual...

No use even trying to count these eyes....

And this little guy is ready for a more permanent home....

It's on my long list of garden chores! LOL

Ive got "eyes" but not like yours...I'm impressed!! Hope mine turn out as good ...this is my first year of growing hosta"s and I am hooked!!!

That Montana Aureo. is FANTASTIC! WOW! I'm getting so excited. Mine are coming. Started to see more eyes as I was raking away the mulch from the plants today but then a BIG C R A C K of thunder sounded and I ran for the house.

Our third child always--even at 52--wonders why there aren't as many baby pictures of her as there are of her older sister--our first child. Second child was a boy in a girl-dominated family, so there are lots of pictures of him, too. I tell her not to worry, though, she'll always be my "baby". :>)

heheh -- Yep Sugar Moon and Neil Diamond are both going to be what I call "growers." I saw the size of the Neil Diamonds that got delivered to the Pacific Auction, and just looking at the bareroots gives you a basic idea of the vigor. These plants, which were just grafted two years back were all monster bareroots. Queen Liz, watch out. (Queen Liz was always a big lusty bare root in its time too). The size of that bare root was not a fluke. Neil the rose is going to be way bigger than Neil the person. Eyes for You, on the other hand, needs a lot of coddling here. And despite it's initial size, I don't think Chipmunk will get much taller -- but will fill out and get wider. Have fun. I got a Neil Diamond from Breck's also, but most everything else I got this year came from the auctions. I think I ended up with 33 newbies, almost all of which were varieties I haven't grown before, except for a couple of old favorites that were somehow made available on Fortuniana rootstock through the Huntington -- don't know how that happened, but I grabbed 'em when I saw 'em (Touch of Class, Oregold, and Sutter's Gold).

Good for you Barb...sounds as if you got some nice thing. Please do make photos and post them in "conversations", I for one would enjoy seeing them. I too have spider lilies, but not all of them have made an appearance as yet. The ones that are blooming are so pretty though. Jan

I'm doing good for an 80 year old. Do not spend much time on garden web since the changes. I'm into African Violets now. I have two shelf units-5 shelves each. I do the RRs for leaves and have about 50 now. My hoya are outside on the patio under the roof. Get some rain when the wind blows. I've sore of neglected them. I love when they bloom though. We sit outside in the evening and the fragrance is beautiful. I wished they bloomed more often than once a year. I may bring some inside and put some of the smaller leaved ones on a shelf instead of the violets. I am on Facebook more than here on Gardenweb. I can't get used to all the changes. It was easier before because i had tabs for the hoya forum, african violet forum, and the cactus forum. Now I just go to African violets and only when we are active in a RR, which is now. Most of the violet people went to facebook. Such is the times, changing, changing. Good to see you are still with the hoya. Keep up the great work.

I snapped this picture real quick earlier today... this is a pic of Sagae eyes coming up. Seems to be the "eager beaver" in my garden, maybe because it's in a whisky barrel? Looks like about 10 eyes so far? Sorry the pic is a little blurry...

After last week with 70+ weather, almost all of my hostas are showing eyes. Sagae is up about 4 inches, Lancifolia is getting ready to leaf out. Now we're expecting a cold snap this week, so I hope they stay in the eye stage for a few more days...

I'm starting to see more eyes as I am raking the mulch away from where I think the hostas are (little hand rake) and also seeing what looks like fine tan hairs around the eyes...is that the top of the crowns? Is that normal or am raking too deep? Too fine to be roots.

You know, I've been hosta-ing for several years now but never noticed that before. I don't think I ever looked that close or got so obsessive before this spring. You guys have certainly turned me into a fanatic...egad! I'm even planning on counting eyes this year!

I also found a big fat slug where I thought a hosta to be---didn't see the plant but the slug is HISTORY!

Many of my older hosta look like that... they tend to get real hairy... some of them seem to move closer to ground level... I'm really considering putting more dirt on top of them this year...

I'm not raking the mulch away yet, too early, but when I do, I use my fingers as a rake. The eyes are so tender, rake tines could damage future foliage.

The hairy things are skeletons from last year's growth.

Take a look at this Buff! These are my Sagae eyes,and I hope it doesn't get as cold as they say later this week. If it does many of my hostas will be toast! Phil

Remember Me is almost fully leafed out here. Lancifolia has gone absolutely mad as have Ebb Tide, Montana AM, Jade Cascade (swoon), Clausa and a few others.

I am going to be hauling out the nursery pots and sheets soon!

Wow, Phil, your Sagae looks great! I am anxious for mine to leaf out, but at this moment I am thankful they are taking their time, since we are supposed to have a cold snap here this week. Looks like I will be out there covering some of the ones (like Sagae) who are the "eager beavers..." Hopefully most of them I can just cover with mulch, as the eyes on most of them aren't up as far as Sagae...
