Frogs Spawned in my birdbath!

We had a big rain about two days ago and that night I heard a lot of frog noises in my backyard. The next morning there were tons of little black eggs on the top of my rain barrel lid and in my birdbath. Later that afternoon they hatched.

Well, the frog did not choose the best location because those little buggers are going to cook on top of the rain barrel when the sun comes out today.

I think I read somewhere that they only need a couple tablespoons of water to put their eggs in. Can't see that's real effective for offspring longevity.

Have you thought about moving them? When I was a kid, we used to capture frog eggs and put them in a jar and watch them grow from tadpoles into frogs. It's fairly easy to do. They don't all survive, of course, but it was very interesting.

You could just move them to a container of water outside and put it in the shade.

Well, they were definitely frog eggs. I moved some to the bath tub with lilies & just in time, too. The fish found them shortly after. The ones in the tub are bigger than tadpoles & are a beige, tan color. They seem to like duckweed, LOL. I'm thinking leopard frog. Haven't got a pic yet ... batteries are low on camera. They're fighters, too. The tub drained twice (completely & don't know for how long but the minnows in there died) & yet they're still alive & kicking. The tub has been fixed & won't drain again.

Oxi-Clean? Oh, God no! Anyone who's ever had a pet bird knows how vulnerable a bird's system can be. While some natural substances--snake venom and hemlock, for example--can be as toxic as manufactured chemicals, I certainly wouldn't ever trust the claims regarding a product that's promoted by a man yelling at me. Ordinary products like baking soda and vinegar are far less toxic and just as likely to remove the algae and what-have-you. They've been safely used for decades all over the place and are recommended by environmental experts, Consumer Reports, and actual scientists who don't stand to profit from some "miracle-du-jour" concoction. Wild birds' overall health or lack of it is often considered a reliable indicator of environmental toxins and disease. Please use some caution and common sense.

I should also say that ideally you should wait for frogs to find your pond next year. If not, get them from a nearby neighbour's pond with their permission rather than a wild pond. You also need to be sure that you are getting taddies from healthy stock ie not from frogs with red leg disease. Also you need to beware of importing invasive plants into your pond. If you email me (click on my name at the top of this message) I will tell you what is wrong with my pond, and you can decide for yourself. What have you put in your pond so far? oxygenators?, marginal? water lilies? pond life? fish?

Those tadpoles are the most effective mosquito larvae eaters - ever ! Wish they would stick around all year long .
