Prepping veggie bed

Hi all! Newbie here, seeking your wisdom!

I've finally staked a claim to a portion of our yard to start a veggie garden. I'm a transplanted northerner, and I'm clueless about veggie gardening on this alien planet!. The spot lies between two old-school concrete driveway tracks. The soil (if you can call it that) is sand... as in, slightly more organic matter than the beach. I know I should do raised beds, but I'm too antsy to get started! So, I'm ready to learn from my mistakes this year. Question is, how and with what should I amend the soil? How much sand should I remove? Should I be concerned about ph given the tracks I'll be planting between?

The cheapest and fastest way to amend the soil is to add the free compost from the city, you just have to find that out where you can call and they deliver to you free of charge in bulk.
Best is to use raised beds to hold the soil in but I have seen amended beds that are raised without any borders, you just have to pack the soil around it.
The more work that you put in the beginning the better results you will have.
There are a lot of different ways to amend the soil, it all depends on what you prefer to do.:)

Thanks for your continuing suggestions! A couple of weeks ago, my Tomato plants' leaves started to change their color and become a bit brownish. I was really worried that the mild hale we had one night (roughly a week after they were planted) might have caused blight. I took a couple of samples (one bad looking old leaf and another newly growing one) to a local farming store (OC Farm Supplies in Anaheim, CA). The guy there was so patient and cooperative, he told me that he can't see any kind of disease with it and felt I might be watering them too much. Relieved, I came home and cut down on my watering routine of every other day to twice a week. It's been a week since and my plants are looking good already. Additionally, I went to the beach early Sunday morning and collected a couple of buckets full of Kelp. I soaked them in a big 13 gallon bin by filling it with water for about 12 hours. I took the thick juicy water out and added one part of this juice to an equal part of water and gave them to all my plants. There was enough left for me to give to my trees as well. This juice is THICK. Afterwards, I took out small chunks of this Kelp and laid it around my plants and covered them up with aged horse manure compost (which could double up as mulch, too). I am planning to repeat this process once a month throughout the growing season. From what I read, this thing is full of nutrients, so I am hoping this will help my plants to have enough of N-P-K. I bought Dr.Earth's Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer (5-7-3) but haven't fed them any of it yet. If I continue feeding them Kelp juice every other week, would that be enough or should I still be fertilizing more? I want to keep away from any store bought feed (like Dr.Earth's), if I can. I don't prep vegetables in advance. Except for maybe potatoes. I will sometimes cut them up for french fries and soak them in cold water in the fridge. But for me vegetables are the easiest part of putting together dinner. When I get home from work I get dinner started. If I'm grilling then while the grill heats I get vegetables ready. Potatoes are easy to peel, and it only takes a minute to snap the ends off of green beans or cut up broccoli or cauliflower, etc.. As much as I love corn, the one job I hate is shucking it, so that is Moe's job. He does it outside. I haven't tried the Lock and Lock's but I have these wonderful vegetable storage containers that Brenda gave me in one of our swaps. They are made by Tupperware and are called Fridge Smart. Different vegetables/fruit require different storage conditions. They have little tabs on the sides that allow for air flow when needed. I tested them with green beans last winter. I bought a large quantity of perfect green beans (hard to find in the winter) and I stored them in one of these containers and they looked and tasted just as good after two weeks as they did when I put them in. If I were you, I would first start a nearby compost pile as vgkg recommended. In order to get the soil ready I would mix in some manure and compost. After your vegies are in the ground, I would put a 2 inchlayer of shredded leaf compost over the garden. If your garden does not get at least 8 hours of direct sunlight, I would consider trimming back some of your trees that shade the garden. I dont know what you mean by a cover since the plants will be in the bed and they can’t be covered. I would put a 4’ tall removable wire fence around it and on the fence posts, place Mylar pinwheels. The irregular movement and flashes are really helpful in discouraging unwanted digging or visitors, and the combo of fence and movement should send the squirrels elsewhere. Other deterrents include sprinkling the soil surface with cayenne pepper flakes and a whole bunch of little plastic forks set upright in the soil until the plants are large enough to not be dug up, rather like Claire’s little sticks but much tackier.😏 You don’t need to make the garden critter proof IME, just more of a hassle than other places.

Wish I could've gotten free compost last year. I did add around a dozen bags of different composts and planting soil and a cubic foot of peat moss to my "sand". Mixed up real good and still ended up with root-knot-nematodes. But the plants take of really nice in the mix, give nice veggies, too, until they nematodes take over. My cover crop for summer was crotolaria, so we'll see how that'll work out.
The more compost and planting soil with fine wood chip barks you can add, the better it'll be. Some people advise against peat moss, but that compressed bale from HD made my soil very airy, maybe because I left it a bit clumpy and not finely shredded when mixed in. I do not recommend topsoil from HD, that stuff, when mixed with my sandy soil gets hard. Hope that helps a little.

Thank you all for your great advice! I spent too much time reading about nematodes, and decided I'm going with raised beds after all. Going to fill with 50% topsoil, 50% compost from a local nursery. Plus throw in whatever leaf litter, etc. I have around the yard. Anything else I should add to get it off to a good start? Thanks again, everyone!!

Also keep in mind it is a work in progress. It is definitely best to do it right from the start, however if you are a newbie like I was and still am, you learn as you try things, and sometimes it is not wise to make a big investment up front. It might not be what you want or what is best.

I started with grade level beds and have been converting them a couple at a time to raised beds. I have started amending with mushroom growing substrate (compost) this year.

As far as what to plant, what do you like?
