Yet another tree question...

I know this has come up before but I'm still struggling with it.

I hope you all can help me come up with a few great suggestions.

I have a very tall palm in a bed beside my driveway and in front of my house. I'm very concerned that it's going to come over onto the house in a storm so our plan is to take it out this winter. But what do I put in it's place?

I had decided on a jacaranda but I've seen a few since then and some of them are kind of sparse and ratty looking. Is this still the right choice?

I want something not-too-tall (it's a one story house), with pretty flowers at some point during the year (I don't really care if it's spring or fall blooming), and of course I want it to be hardy, drought resistant, quick growing, perfect in every way, etc, etc, etc.

Any suggestions are appreciated! And for those of you who come to the swap in October, plan to take a good look and make suggestions then too.

I think I remember the palm you're talking about. How about a fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus)? All the pictures I've seen of them in bloom in the spring have been gorgeous! Plus, they don't get taller then 20 feet, are native, fragrant, and drought tolerant.

Another possibility is the Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus). It blooms in the summer with long spikes of purple flowers that kind of look like butterfly bush flowers. They're drought tolerant, easy to grow, and attract hummingbirds.

What about the sterile version of the purple orchid tree Bauhinia variegata? How do I know if I've found a sterile variety? Wait until it starts dropping pods all over the garden and then know I got the wrong one?

After looking at the trees this weekend, I have a couple more questions...... As Don noted, some of the biggest branches are too vertical to be good fruiting branches. When I examined the tree up close, it seemed that the branches that were the most horizontal were very small and thin. Where the biggest (and most upright) branches are a couple feet long and a half an inch thick, the small, horizontal branches are only a couple inches long and a quarter inch thick. Should I just go ahead and prune the tree to make these tiny branches the future 4 main fruiting branches? I don't mind losing whatever growth I gained last year by hacking off the biggest branches, but I don't want to do something that will be worse than leaving the big branches and trying to spread them. Many people simply till to rip up weeds. Often they do it not because it is the best way to deal with the problem but because they have the equipment to do it. Reasons for you not to do it, especially in those beds around the crape myrtle trees and dwarf yaupons, are that you will hurt what is already in the soil like the roots. Mulching can help against the weeds and adding compost will help the soil and new annuals. All this said, I've never been a "professional" gardener so take my advice with plenty of salt. kimmsr, He may or may not want to remove the annuals depending on what they are, if they have gone to seed, and if they are going into the compost pile they will be eventually getting returned to the beds anyway.

Are there any trees that do well in zone 9 that have red, purple or copper colored leaves?

Kate, just so you know, jackarandas can get HUGE. They tower all over Tampa and are visible driving along I-4. I don't know if there are any smaller varieties, but I do know the common one can be a big tree. Fringe tree would be nice, for sure, and I love the idea of a chaste tree. Can't think of anything with purple or red foliage right off the bat, but will keep pondering. Maybe someone else has a good idea for you.

Definitely not Jacaranda. They get huge, will lift concrete, and are deciduous, which can get messy.

Your last post made me think of Bottlebrush, which does sometimes have a bronze tint to the leaves.
It is also drought tolerant, pest and disease resistant, not too tall (20-25 feet), with a huge Springtime floral display.

The Hong Kong orchid is the sterile one. A good nursery wouldn't sell you one that wasn't as labeled.

As has been said Jacarandas get big - about 50' tall and just as wide and they have roots that can interfere with mowing and lift sidewalks. However, when I was researching it I saw many pics (Google Images) of them in patios, etc. so maybe they can be trained, pruned.
In my case, I found a 100' circle with no overhead wires I could spare and gave a 4' tall one a home in April. Its fast growing and is now over 6' and growing up but not spreading. Now I'm trying to figure out how to protect it if I get a freeze this winter. If I can keep it alive I'll start planning for what I'm going to plant underneath and forget about mowing problems.
