Should I cut the scape?

Much to my surprise and delight, I have a beautiful scape on EGYPTIAN QUEEN which has been blooming for about a week. A number of the blooms have opened as twins. Tonight we are having a cold front come in, and temps will drop into the mid to upper 30s, plus winds of 20-30 mph for the weekend.

Most of the buds are showing some color, so I'm wondering if it would be better to cut the scape and bring it inside to put in water. The winds alone would probably break it, as it is so top-heavy. (There is also another scape coming, but it isn't big enough yet so there's little chance it will get to bloom stage).

Is there a particular temp. that will stop daylilies from blooming, even if they are already in pretty advanced bud stage?

Always a hard choice of "should I or shouldn't I" especially for new plants. I'd cut it off at this point.
For me, I've cut mine back. We too will experience cold temps. Always next year to get another bloom.

Thanks, Julia. I've never had a late-bloomer like this before, so I wasn't sure what to do. I just looked up when I got it, and it was in March of 2008. I also found that it got an AHS award for Best Early Bloomer for 2010. Since it's an EE, I'm quite amazed that it's still going, and going....when they say it reblooms, they really mean it!

Yes, go ahead and snap those puppies. They are most tender when under 18" and still curled. Just fry or grill them - you'll have some tasty meals and get larger bulbs to boot. TomNJ

Just snapped off a few more from the mix Martin sent-wow,some are on the nice mild side with a slow hotness that builds after swallowing and others are on a medium hot side right from the first crunch.Granddaughter tried a few and came to the same oppinion. Very nice mix I have Martin.Wish I had the variety names LOL,at least I know which are the Martins Old Heirloom and the 1s without scapes may be Inchellium-cant wait for my 1st taste of a clove from each to compare.I really liked that surprise of the very mild tasteing scapes that built to a hot peak after swallowing. **just a note to go with the above post about the olive oil for ks=it may not be safe to freeze the scapes mixed with olive oil,add the oil later after you thaw the scapes.Others have posted about oil stuff going bad or something if frozen with mixed veggie stuffs,I may be wrong.maybe others can clarify this a bit. Wow, that's a huge difference. It seems like my species typically only lose around 20% in weight if the scape is left on. The varies from species to species. I guess it probably depends on how big the seed heads are. As far as saving bulbils, and replanting them to increase stock, it is many times more effective as long as you make sure the seeds are mature, you dry them out, and plant them at the appropiate time. Some varieties can produce as many as 100 bulbils per plant while the bulb itself can be re-planted however with smaller cloves. I find that it only takes 2 years of growth to get to full sized bulbs as long as they get very favorable treatment until then. With the species that I am already producing a ton of, I usually allow 5-10% of them to produce scapes so that I have a few hundred of them to plant in my bulbil beds.

I don't think I've seen Sungold Candy before, had to look it up. It is very pretty, & certainly a bargain! If the scapes were just bent, they should bloom. If they are actually cracked, they might go ahead & bloom if they aren't too long from opening. I'm no expert on this, but if it were me, I would keep them on, & if it looked like the buds are shriveling, cut them off immediately. Right now I have a daylily that the scape twisted around so much it snapped. I think that condition has a name, but I can't think what it is. I didn't know what to do, so I left it. The buds have continued to grow & look like they should bloom soon. Maybe the blooms will look bad, but I'll learn something from the experience. Maybe someone else will have better advice for you. As far as rebloom, so hard to say. Some rebloom while they still have a scape, some wait a couple of weeks or more, while others may not rebloom at all. They can behave differently year to year too.

Linda: I've have several that have been in the garden several years and for some they seem to not want to quit this year. Maybe it is all the rain we've had but I've decided it is time to rest, for the season, that is.

I don't know if you've already cut that scape, but I would leave it and see what happpens. There's always a chance it will keep blooming. As I said in another post, I've had blooms in late October and early November many years.

It went down to 5C last night. May May still has 2 blooms on it this morning and they are perfectly shaped, well nearly. Blackberry Candy is also still blooming but since it is more open where it is, it had deformed blooms. Marg

I have cut scapes in the fall before, but I usually wait until after we get a frost. IMHO, these late blooms don't look like much anyway because of the cool temps and fewer daylight hours. Having said that, I have 3-4 scapes coming and haven't cut them yet. We will probably get a frost w/i the next couple of weeks and then I will cut them!

Well, I did cut it last night as the wind was whipping everything around so badly. The next open flower was waiting for me on the dining room table this morning, and is really lovely. (I have a new camera, and if I learn how to use it, how to put the photos on my computer, and then how to get them onto the website, I will share!)

After the next two nights, which are supposed to be in the mid-to-upper 30s, we are supposed to have a nice stretch of sunny, warmer weather. It will be interesting to see if the smaller scape gets to grow up and have flowers, too.
