easier way to find late bloomers

I'm tempted by fall sales, but should try to be disciplined. I added a lot this year but almost everything I fell for is midseason. (Sure, next July will be really great...) But what I need are late bloomers, and they seem so hard to find. I just weeded through a couple of sites that are having sales, and still found almost no lates (except yellow, and I don't need yellow).

Does anyone know of sites that are searchable by bloom time? Or at least list it? Too many sales don't list bloom time then I have to look up everything on Tinkers.

Better yet: any dealer with a SALE whose site is serachable by bloom time??

Or do I want it to be too easy?

Hi, Linnea56. Are you in the US? If so, you could look at Klehm's daylilies on WWW.songsparrow.com....He lists the blooming date of his daylilies and quite a few bloom mid to late because he is using Reckamp in some of his intros. He also has released the last of Brother Charles Reckamp offerings and they are often late bloomers.....here in Canada I'm able to order a number of Klehm's offerings from Gardenimport in Ontario and so far am very pleased with Klehms' plants...also Apps Apricot Sparkles is a great almost constant bloomer here in zone 5 coming quickly back into bloom....you might want to look at some of the Happy Appsters series of rebloomer....I'm sure there are lots of others I'm missing but I'm on my first coffee..good luck, lloyd

Ollalie in Vermont is another that specializes in lates, and is searchable that way.

Klavier, I just can not grow paeoniifolius worth a darn.....I can say that if I let it go dormant in the fall like a konjac or bulbifer that I end up with a dead tuber by next spring.....I've tried storing them dry, in potting mix, never unpotting.....I've been killing this species for years. I know many Amorph friends up north here that have killed almost as many as me.....one guy I know imported 100 from India and they were all dead by the next spring.....This one is just tough for me, period. I've had them for 2-3 years and I love them, but eventually I've killed them.....Not that I do not keep trying by the way.....this year I'm going to take them to the lab where we have a room for our incubators, etc.....it stays very warm in there.....maybe 80+......I'm hoping that the extra warmth and humidity will keep them happy for the winter.....or not!!! Glad to hear the bulbifer is doing well. This one I do find to be easy!! I'm wondering what people think of the various species from Africa?? I've only got 3 so far (1 complete unknown from seed 2 years ago) but they do seem to break dormancy more reliably in the spring compared to the species from Thailand. I'm wondering if anyone else here has the same or different experience?? Anyway, I've rambled about my lack of success long enough.....hope everyones tubers triple in size this year :o) Dan

Rothsay Reveller blooms fairly early; not the earliest, but not in October either! I am trying to think of other early ones for you, but that was so long ago, I can't remember what happened yesterday much of the time- let alone months ago. 'Bliss' a little ~4 inch pink and yellow waterlily comes to mind as a consistently early bloomer. Lots of flowers on good stems for Bliss. this one is a little too open and beat up by rain no doubt When I have time (don't hold your breath!) I will try to go back to my photos for 05 and see what order I took them in. That will help spur my memory on who bloomed when.

All so pretty I can't pick a favorite, love them all. Regal Finale looks nice! I don't have anything late of purple color, not that I have lots of lates (Ha, I looked it up and AHS picture is.. well, bad ;)) F.Garrett Mason is very pretty, love Best For Last too, and Royal Jester is a pretty bicolor. My SSC had it's first bloom today too :) I prefer DL names in the text field this way it's searchable. But it's also good when you can label pics because some of mine look so alike I don't rename my pics and sometimes have a hard time telling who's who :)

Diane, I don't buy the kind with the little holes perforated in it because my experience with it was exactly the same as yours. I spend bigger bucks (and, yes, it is painful to spend the money on it, but the hours of weeding that I don't have to do makes it worth it) on a woven landscape fabric that does not have those little perforations in it. It is slightly thicker than that stuff, but almost looks like felt...doesn't feel like felt, but looks like it. I buy it in big rolls at CostCo....I think the roll is 4' x 200'. I buy two rolls a year most years, so every bed doesn't get it and every bed doesn't get new fabric every year. By recycling it into pathways after I take it off of a bed, I get about 5 years usage from it, so that's not too bad. If you let them, weeds still can grow underneath it or on top of it, but I yank them out before they get that well-established. The woven type is 10,000% better than the perforated type. I generally use the landscape fabric in beds that have tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, okra, squash and melons. I don't use it in beds that have carrots, beans, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, etc. because I'd die of old age before I could cut all the little X's to plant through. I've done corn both ways. Last year I didn't use landscape fabric in the corn bed, and had to fight horrendous amounts of bindweed. This year, I used it, which explains why it took me 5 years to get all the corn planted but I've barely seen any bindweed so far. The landscape fabric we use works great as long as you don't let anything grow up through it from below or down through it from above, because once the roots penetrate that fabric, they're really hard to get out. In the year that I used that landscape fabric stuff Wal-Mart and other places sell that's perforated with holes "to allow the water to flow through", it was like using nothing at all even though I had mulch on top of it. That had to be one of the most useless gardening products I've ever purchased. Oddly, I don't use landscape fabric in my flower beds, which many people do, because so many of my plants reseed (and I want them to). The downside to that is that I have to fight some sort of grassy weed--I believe it is love grass--all year long. You can come move in here if you want, but our quiet little household probably would bore you to death in about 5 minutes. : ) As long as I do a good job of weeding in spring, summers around here are quiet and relatively easy. I grow my plants biointensively, so once they're large enough that their leaves are touching those of the next closest plant, I don't see many weeds sprouting because of the shade the plants provide (and the landscape fabric/mulch combo). Lately, I am yanking tiny elm seedlings out of the mulch as soon as they sprout...it's just that time of year. Dawn

Bloomingfields Farm has a nice website you can search by bloom time. I haven't ordered from them, but I would like to - they have some nice heirlooms. They don't have the latest/greatest ruffled/eyed/edged intros (although their own intros are QUITE nice, with several late bloomers), but their selection is northern-hardy, and organically grown.

Linnea, you need Challenger and Autum Mineret, They are tall stately and blommimg as I send this. Olallie web site is daylilygarden.com. Sign up for a catalog it is wonderful, packed full of info like no other. Plants are #1 top grade. Look at Oallie All Summer, a red to die for. It lives up to it's name, started blooming in June and still bud building. Sweet Tart another late bud builder melon knockout. You will not be disappointed.

Me too. I need lates too as I don't think I have ordered even one late bloomer in all my new daylilies planted so far and coming mid June. I have early and extra early plus the range of mid season but late seems to be very difficult to find.

SANDRA ELIZABETH is the marker for VL's. It's good to have her in the garden. She a great yellow, you know when the true VL season begins. Some hems are marked "L" but many of these are just towards the tail end of the regular season in zones 3-8.

There are others that are truly "VL." They start after pretty much the others are on their last blooms -- Say August 1 or 15 in zone 7. That's when they start!

Try Olallie and Dale Thomas (listed at Perfect Perennials).

Try Woodside nursery, you can click on late and it will show you 20 pages of late bloomers, they send very nice plants, great people to deal with. Nice selection and this is Darryl App's last season selling DL's from woodside, so you can only order untill the end of July, I think. One of my favorite late bloomers is El Desperado. I believe the popular Primal Scream is a late bloomer too. Don't have it, but its gorgeous. Waiting for the price to come down on that one. I find Ollalie to be a bit expensive, and they mostly have older varieties, but everyone has different taste. Hope this helps! Happy Hem hunting! -Jessica

Interesting that someone resurrected my old thread from last fall. I never did find anything then. Isn't Catherine Neal a very late? That one stays in my mind for some reason. I looked at Ollalie but the older forms didn't excite me. Though if one was the last DL blooming in my garden, I might appreciate it better!

I'm still looking; though the garden is so stuffed I would have to dig something else up to make room. Most "free" space (filled with, er, expendable plants) is in the foreground; so I'm making the task more difficult by looking for late AND short or miniature.

Check the other recent thread about late bloomers. I posted a list of late bloomers an arm long. Most of them are readily available and aren't all really old cultivars.

If browsing Mariettas...go to the Price list (not the one with pix), then use your Edit, Find to search for Late. I imagine many of the 'general' listings may list them this way so you can just search using the Edit/Find method.
