My vegetable garden,..start the seeds now ?

I am new to SW Florida, now live in Englewood and have a big back yard. Have already planted my tropical plantation, consisting of 4 mango trees, 2 avocado trees, a key lime tree and a Namwa and Dwarf Red banana plant. But also want to plant a vegetable garden from seed. Being from the NY area, I love beefsteak tomatoes and maybe one other type, and hope to also have peppers, beets, cucumbers and radishes. I am planning to buy the seeds and grow them in starter kits, then transplant into 3 " square peat pots, then into the ground, in the raised bed banana pen I have already set up. Is there a problem with my plan ? Is it OK to transplant tomato's into the ground ? When should I start the seeds in the starter pots ? What about my varieties ? Sept 1st is only 2 days away, am I rushing things ? Any advise would be welcome.

Joe
