Anyone else need to join the PCA?

I always have an excuse to get more plants. Yesterday the excuse was 'my yard looks like a mess in this summer heat, I am so depressed' ....

So in order to feel better, I went to Lucas and bought that colocasia 'midnight', the one I am dreaming about since March. Yep, finally broke down and paid for it. I was looking high and low for a trade or, to get it cheaper than Lucas, but nada. I feel happy now

... and after every such 'fix' I promise myself this was the last time and I stop now and I won't get anymore plants.

I need to join the PCA ( plant collector anonymous)

Hi Abend! What abeautiful plant!! I can see why you had to have it !! I do the same thing. The thrill of the plant !! LOL.Severe budget cut backs here( I really don't have any extra to spend on plants at this time.) You think that would stop me NO!! Just a little one that no else will notice if I plant it when no one is home but me and the dogs !! Ha ha

You have my empathy in regard to summer heat affecting plants.
One of my blueberry plants looks as if it has been torched.
I water it right away in hope to save it. Some of my coleus
are so droopy. I love your new acquisition, colocasia 'midnight'.I had one some time ago but I killed it.:-(

Jessica, I'm no expert, but if you are on photobucket already, it will be really easy. Just click the box for the pic or pics you want to share. Then go all the way to the bottom of the page and select the option on the far right for generate img and html code. It will take you to the next page. There you just right click on the first option, select "copy". Then come back to your post on the forum, right click and select "paste." Your pics will show up after you hit the "preview message" button. We will look forward to seeing more of your decorating. Luvs

MizAnnThrope, I too have little family left....all of the immediate family on both DH's side and my side, siblings and in-laws, are gone and we never had any children. I was feeling down about it. (We had spent a number of xmases alone.) I wanted to share my house and my decorations with people but everyone kept putting me off until January. I kept trying though and now I've had friends over a couple of times already, there will now be 10 of us for dinner on xmas day, I have more friends coming over for dessert after xmas, plus I have another few coming over maybe between xmas and new years, another couple on the sat after xmas and another couple the following weekend. Another friend reached out to us and invited us to join his family for xmas dinner, and I had to turn him down, but I was so touched, nonetheless. So I went from a dearth to an abundance with a little effort and putting it to the Universe to provide what I need....I'm thinking now what I need is a little more refrigerator space! ;) While there is sadness with having no family, there is something wonderful about being able to create your own new "family" with friends and neighbors. Each of these events is like a holiday to me, spreading my holiday cheer over a whole month instead of just on a single day. Xmas to me means children, and since I don't have any, every year, I do a "secret santa" thing where I sneak presents onto the front porch for the neighbor kids late on xmas eve....I have more fun doing that, I think, than the kids have receiving the gifts. You are not alone. If you choose, you can reach out to those in need. You can contact a food bank or a place that provides meals on the holiday. You can put together care packages (combs, lotions and the socks with the rubber grippers on them are always needed...even small teddy bears are welcome) and take them to a local nursing home. You can contact your local hospital and see if there isn't something you can do there. You can reach out to neighbors ...make batches of cookies and deliver them. Contact your local senior center and see if they can recommend visiting people who are shut-ins. Or you can choose to be alone and find the peace and comfort you need in your solitude. But even in that, know that you are not alone. That you are part of the cosmic wonder that is the universe. That every cell in your body is made up of atoms that came from the stars. That when you walk, the entire world is under your feet, supporting you. And that an abundance of gifts surround you every moment. All you need do is notice them. I'm wishing you the very best for the holidays, and asking that you receive that which you need the most.

Jamie, I'm late to the game but am SO down with this. I work from home and used to be very organized (thanks in GREAT part to this forum!) So much so, that I had an Access database that I would use to designate which box, in which room, seldom used items were in. (How anal is that?!?!?!) If I didn't kind of sort of know where something was, I would look it up in the database & voila! But in recent years, we've had some lifestyle changes including my 91 y/o mother moving into assisted living. And so I have "inherited" some of her things (that either I wanted or she wants & doesn't want to keep at the assisted living place) and do alot of "hands on" care for her (IE doing her books, refilling her pill boxes (we have four of those weekly thingies), keeping track of her medical info, etc.) That's one reason I've ramped up the usage of my PDA over the past ~1 1/2 years. Since she's legally blind, but her mind is pretty good, I try to keep good notes about how her hearing aids work, how her cell phone works, etc so if she encounters problems, I can hopefully walk her through troubleshooting over the phone, rather than make a special trip over there. (Not that she's that far away, but I do see her twice each week & work full time. So I tend to get disgruntled if I have to make a special trip b/c she ran out of pills.) Plus, since she made her living "doing books", she's often asking me about this investment or that bill & I have to stay on top of things & it's helpful to have the info in the "Palm (TX)" (hehehe!) of my hand. Unfortunately, the "physical" aspect of my organization has suffered. :-0 My office is the worst, probably because I spend so much time there. My husband is always asking me to work on it. Over the past year (I'm SO ashamed to admit this...) my idea of "working on it" has been to stuff all the clutter into shopping/grocery bags & shoving them into the closet or the bathtub of the bathroom that's right next to the office. (Bowing head in shame.) Aaahh! I have it too. I realized today that I don't have any nasturtium seeds to plant around the much-planned-for veggie garden. So I went online, found two sources I liked, and managed to buy basil and cherry tomato and broccoli and I don't know what else. The seed catalogues have their stuff on sale now... I didn't need to know that. I didn't need more seeds. Just needed nasturtium.... There's no stopping me.

I am with you all, can't see a plant I don't have and not want it. It is an obcession with me. I can't wait for the next plant sale.

I'm in too , it doesn't matter what I already have, I need more. It can be embarrassing when other people notice but at least my husband only says 'just get it planted' and he buys also just not to the extent I want to!

Saturday, after work, on a whim, I stopped by Lowes "just to look". I started off buying 6 broken bags of mulch which filled up the cart that I left by the cashier so I could go back to "look" at the clearance plants. They had 3 gal Tropicals for .50!!!!!! After muttering "you're killing me!" I go off in search of another cart and bought $5 worth of plants I really don't need but refuse to leave.
My car was stuffed. It looked like I was coming home from a swap or something. I get home and my smart alek son asks me if I'm sober. ha ha.

Evelyn, love your CHAD find!!

Sign me up!! I love plants and you would think I love weeds too, but I can't pass a plant that I don't have and not find a place for it. My back yard looks like a jungle right now, but I'm already looking to see if there's a tiny spot not planted so I can add something new.

Kristi, that sounds like a wonderful shopping trip. I think I'll go to Lowes today and look for paint chips - through the garden entrance of course.

CHAD... hilarious! I'd buy the shirt, except just think of all the plants I can get on clearance at Lowe's for 16.99!

I admit it. I spend money I don't have on plants that I don't necessarily need. Although I justify it with reasons like:
"I'm improving the value of the property." or "I'm saving money on the grocery bill by planting all these fruit trees."

I've finally realized that I could spend the next 20 years being "done" with the garden and there will always be room for one more.

I walk into and out of all big box stores through the garden department. Sometimes I'm lucky and find things half price, and sometimes I break down and buy something, but I hardly ever walk out empty handed, even if it's just a 88 center.

OMG... YEAP.. I HV CHAD! :-) I have been dreaming of the Harlequin Hydrangea.. I can only find it online which adds S/H to an order and I really can't afford extras. Then I remembered that I had a order placed with a co. that sells them, and the order was BULBS.... and just a few weeks ago I got lots of bulbs on clearance.... I sent cstmr service an email asking to change my order... I haven't heard a response yet.. so my fingers are crossed..

Now I see posted of various clearances at Lowes and Home Depot... I never see them there. I find them at other stores.. what part of the store do they put them at your stores? Actually I seen a whole cart of droopy but alive plants at the back of the Home Depot.. so I promptly went to ask about them... hoping they were trashed... they were being returned to the suppliers. :-( Good thing I asked. I would hate to be arrested for stealing plants.

I have what I feel is an excellent reason to keep bringing home plants, our yard is going to be on the yard tour for the International Plumeria Conference in 2010 - I HAVE to be proud of our garden don't I??? :-D Suzanne

Yea...Its gotten to the point that I back my car into the carport so my neighbors wont see me unload ANOTHER trunk full of plants.

I think you have alot of self-control waiting that long to buy this plant, so you well deserve it!

I usually have a 24 hour turnover: see a plant I like, find info online immediately on it, go to nurseries till I find it and buy it!

Really, I admire you and it is a beatiful plant. I have the Black Magic and looks like this one!

I see it, there are a lot of CHAD/PCA people... teeka, you are for sure a CHAD candidate.
addiction or compulsive disorder, a fine line, but for me, one fix and I am good for some time. I don't need to have each and every plant, nor a specific plant in all its varietions. I also do not buy the bargain plants (except I need a fix) and I rarely need to have the plant the others have...
you all can tell I had my fix and I am talking 'normal' I feel fine, don't worry about me

My garden is an obcession with me, but I don't care. I could have worse vises. :o) I love my garden and when I don't, I tear it apart and put in something I love. Between this year and last I've revamped the whole thing I think. It makes me smile when I see it and that's what counts.

I blame this site! You guys post cool stuff, I become obsessed, I drive all over town looking for "it", then I become distracted and find five more things that I didn't have before and I buy them, and after I plant them I end up having to tweak the area a bit, then I go online and try to find the original plant I was looking for...see something else that catches my eye.... it's a terrible cycle ;)

I've been so long without buying plants because of budget cuts. My youngest starts school this year so I will be working so that I may have some spare cash. I also found a work at home gig I've only been doing for 3 days but it seems like it might bring in some decent money. AND, I didn't have to pay to get started. I've been through so many of those scams it's why I can't buy plants! LOL. Anyway, I hope to get back on my feet with plant shopping SOON!!!! :-)

Our Master Gardeners group had a volunteer work day at Give Kids the World this past Saturday. I came home with lots of trimmings & a few seed pods. They have a Cordia Boissieri- White Geiger tree. There is only one other in the state, we were told, & that is in Leu Gardens. I got cuttings & one seed pod. The cuttings were all mature wood tho, & I don't know if they will root or not. I'm waiting for the seed pod to dry. Wish me luck!!! I can't help myself, I have to have any new plant I find.

Joyful, I don't know where you are located but I believe all county's have a Master Gardener program. Here in Osceola our new classes start next week, Aug. 19. Call your county extension office & they will give you all the details. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

coffeemom- I'm in Saint Cloud. Where is Ricky's swap happenning? Is he in Orlando? I'm pretty sure not though due to the month, my husband will be having hip surgery so I will be doing EVERYTHING around here. 8-)

happy girl- I'm in Saint Cloud too. I think you told me that you're near lakefront right? I'm out at Northshore in Pine Grove. Not too very far from you. I wonder if the extension office has a website. I never remember to make calls til evening hours and then everything is usually closed.LOL Thanks for the info.
