Interesting seedling/plant photos of good,bad & ugly hostas

I would guess some of you have probably taken photos of interesting open pollenated hostas you've found in your beds, if so. let's see some photos.

This seedling was found near Ginko Craig and has narrower leaves than GC or any other hosta I have. I suppose it could be self pollenated being reflective of a large gene pool.

My hostas are only a few years old so i have plenty of room between plants to inclde some open pollenated seedling to see what may develope.

I've got a slew of Elegans OP seedlings (most likely selfed) running throughout the garden.

I didn't take any pictures this year, but when they are big enough we dig them out of the front and put them in a shady spot in the back and let mother nature take care of them.

Never really thought to look and see if they were different from mama in anyway. There is a Wide Brim nearby and a couple of NOID, so they could be a cross. But Sieboldiana grows so slow I would probably have grand kids before these OP seedlings showed any signs of variation in their genes.

Have a few Elegans seedlings, here's one that has some pucker. I have lots of OP seedlings, but those were started by me and not found in the garden.

Jo when you started with hostas and put the "67" after your name, it was a mere blip in time, how long did that last, maybe one week? and you were headed for 100 if I recall correctly. And that may work for you. You have an active life, but you are also compulsive about maintaining your hosta records. Am I right or not? HA,.....I thought so. Now I'm trying to break that hierarchical habit I've had all my life, especially when I was a librarian before I discovered boats and computers. So I like KEY WORDS or TAGS which is so simple a term even the youte of today can understand it. And I am trying to have my files this year posted on Flickr with tags before they upload, but all on my computer or CLOUD are organized by camera file name, by date, and with all sorts of tags--except the ones I need to search with like "gold" or "Solberg" or whatever lets me find it in response to someone's question on this forum. In the end, we all have to know WHICH hosta fulfill certain attributes. I don't rely on an outside service (like Flickr) to be a forever solution to my photos. OH no. I went through Webshots folding up and turning into an observer site only, lost my photos from there. Then I had an external harddrive fail on me. So I'm pretty concerned about keeping the pictures themselves. It's a fun thing for me. I can sit here and immerse myself in viewing the pictures I took, refresh the mental notes I made to myself about who was who when they had missing names. I'd check the past photos. It works for me. And that is one reason I take pictures with more than one hosta in them. If I lose the nametag, and I know who it's neighbor is, then I look for the picture of the known neighbor, and voila, I see who the would-be NOID is. That is also why I try to identify all the hosta in the photo too. Does anyone else watch their photos as a full screen slideshow? Do you say the names of the hosta before the slide changes? And for those you missed, do you go look at them next day to see who they are? Well, I do that. Seems to me you could put it on a manual slideshow, so you can play NAME THE HOSTA at your next club gathering, or your family gathering if everyone is into the garden thing. I'd play it. Lose, probably. Except where my own personal garden comes in. I'm getting much better. I think watching the slideshow helps a lot. Okay, now that really wasn't off topic was it? It simply says how I use my indexing. ;)

Hi Peg- you're too sweet. I will do so before bed tonight. Dave- personally I don't know much about electric fences (I mean, I get the general principle and all, but beyond that I'm entirely uninformed), but I googled "iguana" and "electric fence" and found that others have used them for that purpose. As far as I can tell, those who have report mixed results. It seems like a good idea if it could be done fairly cheaply (apparently, the condo association is low on funds right now). It's now on my research list-- thanks. There's this fellow up the coast about 40-50 miles from me, somewhere in Palm Beach Co., I believe--he has a website on which he talks about his trials and tribulations with iguana infestation on his property. Evidently, the iguanas scoffed at HIS electric fence...anyway, he now advocates this control method (which gets a huge OMG from me!): He sets up snares where they travel regularly, and when they ensnare themselves, he removes them from the snare with his bare hands, and then throws them in an old freezer!!! (He says that FL authorities have confirmed to him that freezing is considered humane.) I take no position on that last statement, but, I could just never ever do what he does. Call me a wuss, and I will accept the label LOL...I COULD NOT DO IT. Iguanas give me the heebie-jeebies!!!! At any rate, I know that this thread is probably making you all pretty weary. I understand--who wants to read depressing news (and there's more, but I'm sparing you all)? So, I'll stop, I think. I do want to say that there are more kind suggestions in this thread than I've been able to acknowledge or reply to, and I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and ideas. What is very clear to me now is that I will probably never solve this problem completely...but I'll keep trying, and when I find an effective solution--whenever that might be--I'll update everyone. Slipcovers - the good, bad & ugly

Probably 4-5 years too late but maybe we can weigh in a little here as well. When it comes couch covers or sofa covers, the traditional sense would be that it's loose and unfitting and yes - companies that sell sofas or slipcovers like us would put in a lot of effort in making the end result look super crisp like so: You're right - it's unrealistic to be super focused on one's decor and presenting it to the world but when we do it for a living it's kinda something we have to do. It's constantly having to show our best work every single time, but it's definitely important to note that not all slipcovers can be made equally. In our experience, we could classify aesthetic sofa rejuvenation into 3 major categories: 1) ready-made slipcovers / universal covers / drapes These are the typical "Stretch covers" you see everywhere going for about US$100 to $300 and claims to fit every single shape of sofa, which they don't. (I've personally tested this on a Chesterfield sofa and looked like a trampoline. Feel free to pm for a photo.) They are economic but aren't the best looking - hence, good for a quick fix. 2) tailored made sofa covers (can be further sub-categorised into "relaxed" or "snug" fits) These are the slipcovers we're most familiar with since CB sells them or we can go to an upholsterer to have it made for about $800 onwards -- which I have to say sounds cheap because upon inquiring many upholstery shops that's just the charge for labour as far as I remember. $30/yard extra for fabrics, which brings the total to $1200 but once again this are upholstery shops. Nowadays online slipcover makers like us and others are able to provide these at about $500 or so for a complete so slipcover set inclusive of seat/back cushion covers. This can go a couple of ways, with the "relaxed" fit looking a bit more shabby with a skirt and some people do intentionally go for this look. Alternatively if you want something more fitting and closer to upholstery, it is very possible for sofas that constructed more squarely as per the image above. While it's also possible for more curvy sofas, the outcome won't be as perfect. Having said all that, the more fitting the slipcover the less likely it'll look saggy in a couple of years. 3) upholstery Not much needs to be said as this is literally putting fabric over the couch so the fit should theoretically be perfect. The downside is just cleaning and as you all mentioned, potentially quite gross (even steam-cleaning isn't a 100% solution). Of course, it is just as expensive as getting a slipcover made from that same upholstery shop. Hope this gives a bit more perspective to everyone else despite the tardiness! Just like everyone else though we're also quite interested in what you went with in the end!

WOO - HOO! I harvested two black beefsteaks yesterday, 5/29. Which is normally when I plant out. So, a 60 day large beefsteak. The first time I have harvested before mid June. And the first time my first tomato was not a grape or cherry. This variety is an unknown that a friend of mine and myself bought as a Watermelon Beefsteak, but turned out to be a purple/black. It has been the best overall plant of mine ever since... 4 years running. It is early, produces until frost, is my most disease resistant plant and is a nice dark green color. But, disease showed up last week... septoria and a little of early blight. Some of the septoria is high up on the young growth. So, I have to stop that sh__ now! So far, no sign of the fusarium that I had bad last year. Any guesses as to the type of tomato?

Very interesting topic. Last growing season I noticed some seedlings growing near Blue Mouse Ears. Top right of picture taken on May 22. They look blue. I left them there to see what developed. I had planned on moving them once they developed four leaves but never got around to it.
Salute, Frosted Dimples and Dream Queen are also in the vicinity.

Here are some more around Holy Mouse Ears on June 10. They started out a yellow colour but some have changed to blue. I'm really excited about them but they are probably nothing special.

Irawon, I'd be excited too! They are definitely all different looking, and could be a lot of fun to see how they grow. Your Blue Mouse Ears is a handsome guy, and it would be nice having a lot more like that.

This blue-green seedling in the center of the picture is from Cinnamon Sticks seeds,but it doesn't look anything like the parent plant. I have two of these planted next to each other. I have other seedlings from the same batch of seeds that look more like Cinnamon Sticks. That's nature for you! Phil

Fun topic idea, thanks! Never thought to foto-document the 'pathway volunteers' ^_^ so I'll try to remember this year. Every once in a while one grabs our attention and we move to the seedling beds, but mostly we let children of garden guests dig 'em up and take home as a freebie.

This open pollenated seedling showed up between Paul's Glory and Old Glory where I'd had my daughters potted Loyalist the previous summer. Later is the season the green/greeen variegation is barely visible. I am waiting to see what this year brings, being its 3rd season. Note the leaf shape is not like either 'Glory'. They are more like Loyalist. Anyway, I call it Theresa's Glory.

Les, it sounds like you have the offspring of a "summer romance." And it is pretty good looking too.

Theresa's Glory is a fine name choice.
