a little beat up from the ride home

My dear husband noticed these blooming in front of a large nursery while driving to visit his parents today. Well, of course I had to go!

They were in pots half way in the ground with no names. They were bursting out of their plastic pots! (literally) The lady had to dig the pot out of the ground because the roots had grown out of the pot and into the ground.

I counted 88 buds left on it! What a bargain for $14!

She tried to look up what they had ordered a couple years back but nothing fit this description.

Any ideas?

It's about 36 inches tall and the bloom is about 5.5-6 inches big.

It had many other blooms on it, but they got damaged on the way home - it was a bit tall for my minivan, so I took them off.

Hi, MIght that be Hyperian? Mine is still in bloom here. Just a guess, cheers, lloyd

I think you may be right! I always thought of Hyperion as more wispy, but I just looked up pics of it and most do look just like mine.
Thanks so much! Unless someone else has any other suggestions, I'm naming it Hyperion. And it is tall so it will have to be moved to in front of my blue agastache as I saw in a picture on this forum. Looks great together.

Amanda - thanks for going to the trouble to make your progress so clear! That was a clever solution. It gives me an idea for fixing a mess I have made... Your sphere turned out great. I sure want to see it lit up! I have not tried what you are talking about so this is just a guess but surely one of the zillion varieties of tubes of contractors' adhesive would work for your project. Is there any chance a "shelf" could be fashioned out of transparent plastic to hold the light strand rather than trying to glue each light separately?? maybe there is a way to clue or cement on clips you could wind each light around. hmmm. Once I tried taking fiberglass mesh and "weaving" wire thru it by making a sort of U shape with wire and pushing it through the weave of the fiberglass so the bottom was caught and secured by the mesh. When I concreted this down, the wire ends stood up and the mesh and concrete secured the bottom to the object I was making. This left the wires ready to do anything I wanted with them. That would be very simple and you could use your concrete to attach these wires anywhere you wnted along the edge of your sphere. The whole result would be invisible except for handy wires waiting to be used to hold your lights. Would this work for you? Laura

drennank2000- This forum offers a lot of advice about mower quality, and to be sure there is a lot of insight and experience reflected in the comments. BUT, I take issue with some of the prevailing knowledge. NOT all inexpensive mowers are junk after a couple of seasons, no matter how much you use them. Where 'cheap' mowers principally cut costs are in the wheels and hardware. Engines on premium mowers usually differ only in having an engine with a cast iron cylinder liner vs. the piston running on the bore of the alloy block. This helps with durability, but truth be told, it is regular oil changes and maientenance that really add to longevity. I have two bottom of the line Tecumseh engines that are +twenty years old, used every summer to cut two plus acres of grass and they run perfectly. No cast iron liners, just well maintained. Check out this mower from Sears: Model no. 917.385123, 22inch push. Heavy steel double baffled deck. Briggs SQ 4.5 HP flat head, trust me, plenty of power even when mulching with the supplied mulch plate. It does have cheap plastic wheels with no real wheel bearings, BUT, for an extra 8 to 10 bucks apiece you can replace them with steel ball bearing wheels, available right there at Sears or at a local Home Depot. Quality wheels make a BIG difference in mower operation. AND, this mower comes with heavy gauge steel indexed wheel adjusters. SO, for about a 150 bucks, (the price of the mower), plus another 32 to 40 bucks for wheels you get a quality machine that will operate as well as many at twice the price or more. AND, I promise you, it will last way beyond two or three seasons NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU USE IT, as long as you perform proper engine maientenance and don't abuse it. There is even a self-propelled version of this model if you want to go above two hundred dollars, but less than three hundred. Hope you find some info. in this post. Good Luck!

Oh! Oh! Here's my chance to enable. LOL Ceresone, the link will take you to the Brug forum with all kinds of pictures and information. To find it again, go to Tropicals and the link to Brugmansia is at the top of the Tropicals page. Have fun...the picture on the first page of the "Brug" forum should cause all sorts of trouble for you. Hope you have more resistance than I. :O) You are probably encountering Jimson Weed in your garden...that one isn't very nice. Some years ago we had a young man decide he could swim the James River, when it was in flood, after "using" some Jimson Weed...he didn't make it. Beerhog, I had already decided to do mine as you said. I was just curious about all the work others were going to with them, but they were mostly in colder zones. If I understand correctly, it can have the lower leaves removed, now that it has forked, to make it canopy out so the blooms will hang nicely. Does anyone else do that? I believe I like that look best. Or do you make that decision based on the individual plants growth habit? Kaye, that must be why it appeared to be so out of proportion to the pot...it had been crammed into that pot for the winter, but I think it was trying to escape when I got it. LOL I was trying to imagine that sized plant (indicated by trunk size) growing in it the year before. Interesting plant! Never put a wool item in the dryer, at any temp, or for any reason. (Only exception would be modern materials treated with special resins.) To do so would be to risk felting the fabric irreprarably. You can try airing, enclosing it w/ baking soda or charcoal. You can try water washing it (very cool water, hand wash, with as little agitation as possible) then putting it dripping wet into a dry washing machine and spininng the water out in a spin cycle with no added water, then drying flat or at least carefully laid over several lines or bars of a dryer. I have to confess that I have one or two antique woolen items that were unfortunately stored with mothballs that I have never been able to get clean of the stink. Despite owning them for many years and trying multiple rounds of trying to remove it. (Naturally they are not stored in between times in more moth balls!) Regarding washing "working" indigenous clothing. I have a few Colombian ruannas (somewhat similar to serapes); one is sheeps wool and the other two are alpaca. They were intended as outer wear for high-altitude cowboys and I (and my Mom before me) have worn them for more than 50 years. I do wash them (in their original intended use they would have gotten wet in rain storms regularly, and indeed during the wet season probably would have stayed dampish for months at a time). I often wear one while working on my farm in spring and summer. I use only slightly warm water, Eucalan detergent, minimal manipulation while wet, machine spin to extract water and hanging over three or four adjacent clothes to dry them. HTH L.

Hyperion is certainly an oldie. I've heard, not from experience, that Hyperion has a fragrance. If yours does, then it very possibly could be. So many blooms left on there, you will still have a good show!

Hyperion is quite fragrant - and especially so in the evening. They smell like Lily of the Valley. That should make the ID easy. But mine (zone 6) have been done blooming for at least a week or longer.

I'm thinking that your daylily could be (instead of Hyperion, which is much taller)the "marker" for very late daylilies, SANDRA ELIZABETH. This is an oldie with the older open formed blooms and was hybridized by Don C. Stevens back in 1983. Although it is registered as only reaching 28" in height, it is usually at least 32" or taller here.
I grabbed the camera and ran out after 8 PM tonight, as I couldn't find a file picture of it. The blooms had been rained on all morning. Here are a couple of ( bad) pictures for comparison:

Is SANDRA ELIZABETH fragrant? Mine is very fragrant, like they said about Hyperion. I also thought Hyperion would be done blooming by now, but I did get this 25 min. north of me and even though it's not that far, it's higher elevation so there is always a difference in temperature. So, I figured, well, maybe it is Hyperion.
However, I would love it if it were Sandra Elizabeth because I need later blooming ones!
The jury is out. I guess I'll have to wait and see until next year to see when it starts blooming in my garden. If it blooms in July - Hyperion, if it starts in August - Sandra Elizabeth.

Wait wait - I just looked it up and Hyperion is a Diploid and SE is a Tetraploid so I could try to cross it with my Joan Senior to see if it's a Dip or a Tet - right?

My allergies are so bad that I generally can't detect fragrance except on real oldies such as 'Citrina' and sometimes 'Hyperion.' Haven't checked SANDRA ELIZABETH for fragrance, as it's in the back of a bed, but will check on that tomorrow and let you know.

My thought when I saw this was first Sandra Elizabeth but the second thought was it may be Hyperion Elite by Klehm which is a dormant tet 36X 7 ext and noc and fragrant. Though a EM registered it goes off more Mid for me and is still going.

As your daylily has been living in a pot rooted through the bottom into the ground it's hard to tell but my older Hyperion I don't think is branched quit the way the photo you posted up above, it's branched but differently. While I am zone 5 westcentral Illinois, my Hyperion finished it's last about a week ago and it has a habit of a bit of a weaker scape leaning until a few buds as gone off.

My Sandra Elizabeth has not started yet, though close, she runs for me between 28 and 33ish in height here. This year with all my rain I think closer to 36".

Pretty either one, enjoy.

I can't try to cross it today with a dip or tet because of the rain. I'll try tomorrow. Then I'll have to wait a bit to see if it forms a seed pod. Joan Sr. is really good for this as she seems to be very fertile so I'll use her as the parent plant. She's a Dip and I don't think I have a Tet blooming now so she'll have to do.
I do like to know the names of mine, but even if I never find out I'll be happy with this one!
