It's August - where'd the blooms go? (photos)

Yes, it's that time of year when naked scapes dominate my garden landscape. But there were a few (very few) bright spots out there.

ROYAL JESTER having its last bloom today in the new raised bed. Petunias and pentas will provide the color from now into fall.

SHORES OF TIME is blooming alone in the long, back bed.

ADAMAS is the lone bloomer in Raised Bed 1.

PATRICIA SNIDER MEMORIAL's last bloom was today.

DELIGHTFUL DESIGN brightened up the pot ghetto.

INDIGO BUNTING bloomed today, but I cut down the scape so it could put energy into roots and fans.

Others still blooming this week were Ethereal Light, Purple Corn Dancer, Rock Candy, Remembering Rose, Happy Returns and Stella. Scapes are coming on Charlie, Moonlight Sail, Super Chief, Freedom's Triumph and Big Time Happy.

In the meantime, I'm chasing butterflies and building new gardens.

Building new gardens is always good. That way you have empty beds to move plants to or room to buy new ones.

I still love that PATRICIA SNIDER MEMORIAL, its my favorite of this batch. I like your new in sun raised garden bed, its very colorful. And ROYAL JESTER looks great in that new bed.

I can so empathize! I still have the persistent bloomers, and the occasional ne plant that I've allowed a bloom, but no more.

I too am working on new places to plant...even if the bed itself is hardly new, it will be as if it were new. Your petunias still look good, and I love your new bed.

Autumn: Nice sinks. Serif? Ours too. You have excellent taste. ;) Musicgal: Yikes! You got lucky with that punctured gas line. northpolehome: I really like your siding with the different reveal sizes. Nice custom detail. We just got back online after going dark for a few days. Had to move out of our rental house, as it's being sold. New house was supposed to be ready this week, but is a week behind schedule. Final inspection for C.O. is this week, followed by one last clear coat on the floors, and a few days to dry & air out. So maybe 7-10 days, if the inspection goes well. So we're moved in. And by moved in, I mean to a pile in the corner of the basement and garage: ;) The movers were great. Our third time using them in 1 year. (old house -> storage, storage -> rental, rental -> new house) Of course there were a "few" things we wanted to move ourselves. Art work, antique mirrors, TV, computer equipment. Realized after that I can't safely transport more than one of those items at a time, so that mean 4 trips back & forth between homes, 40 miles apart. Checked the family into a hotel one town over. The gods of moving were obviously p!ssed off at us. After getting settled for an hour or two, realized that the first room had mechanical problem with the AC. Moved the circus to another room, only to discover late at night that the room was in a wifi "dead zone" and couldn't get signal from the "free" hotel wifi. (Kids have online homework, I have to connect to job) Moved the circus again this morning to another room. Tomorrow I'm expecting the plague of locusts and frogs, floating down the river of blood. Bring it. I am a rock. With all the moving around this year, I'm certain my kids will grow up to be vagabonds or gypsies or something. Told the 8yo DD Thursday that we were going to a hotel for 10 days. I then left to go tell the boys. She then proceeded to put out her outfits, roll them and pack them in her luggage, put her toiletries in a ziploc (which she got herself. Thanks TSA) and top off her luggage with her stuffed doggie and slippers. Not sure if I've given her valuable life lessons, or fuel for the therapists. They can be so supportive sometimes. Update on our front. We finally got the builder to finialize the spec/cost sheet to fit our budget. He was estimating some things way to high since this is a custom build and the first time he is doing this home. We were pre-approved on our loan so I took the final plans, spec sheet, cost sheet and signed contract to the bank yesterday. They will be starting the appraisal process now and it may take 2 weeks. They did throw a curveball our way though. They want us to have our well water tested prior to closing on our construction plus loan. That would be great it there was electricity to the well, but we had'nt had the new powerlines run yet. So I call my well digger and he said that he would take care of it for us, but he'll have to do a flush and put clorox down it first to make sure there is no bacteria since we had the well drilled 2-1/2 years ago. That's how long this house building process has taken us to get to this point. So hopefully the water test won't take long and we'll be able to truck right along. Prayers would be welcomed! With all that we're not even sure when we will break ground and our lease will be up the end of December and the cost to go month to month is crazy. So we may have to move in with my MIL which I don't think I can handle for very long. Our builder said 4 months from framing to move in but we'll be in the middle of a midwest winter so who knows how many weather delays we'll have. Everyones build and process is looking great and I can't wait to show our progress pictures soon I hope :)

Shelby is my favorite, you've really had some long lasting daylilies this year! Sea Shell Lullaby seems to have started off to a rough start, with losing its first buds & fan early on. Hope it will be better next year, it is really a beauty with that white edge. I don't have much blooming right now, but been so busy with apples, pears & berries, oh my! I'm glad the fruit all seems to come in after most of my daylilies have finished.

I love your bed Debra. The spring planted petunias are long since past here. I went to a few nurseries and box stores during a "cool" front (high was 88) last week and everything (including the help) looked just plain tuckered out. So are those new Petunias in your bed? Are there still fresh plants to be had in your area? It's a shame here really because the hummers are just showing up and they adore Petunias.

Thanks for the nice comments on the raised beds!

Maryl - I planted the pentunias in the raised bed 3.5 weeks ago. The dark purple ones with white edges I bought right before that, and the others I'd had growing in pots for a couple of weeks before deciding to use them for edging in the raised bed. There are fresh plants at Lowes and Home Depot here. And they've had new petunias in until recently. Now it's mostly lantanas, asters and mums.

The hummingbirds here don't pay much attention to the petunias. They love the pentas more than anything else I have. They also like my flowering bushes - Buddleia, Wigela and Hibiscus.

Love your raised bed. It looks both beautiful and organized at the same time. Shores of Time is such a beauty and looks like it's a great bloomer too. My favorite is the shot of the butterfly.

INDIGO BUNTING is beautiful, and the shot of the butterfly is terrific. Very artsy!

It's kind of depressing looking at all those naked scapes, isn't it? I've had so little to admire that I've started counting bud scars to have something to do.

Thanks all! I will post photos of the new circle bed soon. This one was made where I had a tree cut down two years ago. It has taken this long for the roots to rot.

Vickie - I didn't originate the term "pot ghetto," but it seems rather appropriate for what I've had going the past three years. I thought it was a funny name, too.

ANNABELLE's BLUSH, a June bonus from Maryott's, was blooming today. It's been very hot here, so the color is a little anemic.

My TURN OF THE CENTURY hibiscus is amusing me with its dinnerplate size blooms.

ANNABELLE's BLUSH is still very pretty, even if it does look slightly paler that the website picture.
