So, what is it about DLs that make one go insane...

and want to rip up the whole front yard of grass and move all the kids play cubes to the shady parts of the back yard so I can use the space.

I've always been a crazy gardener, but this year the DL bug bit me hard. I just don't get it and I can't explain it to my husband either. I see people doing this with hostas too - planting more trees for more shade and even planting in neighboring yards!

I went from 1 (stella d'oro) cultivar to over 30 this summer! And my wish list is pages and pages long.

Seriously, can someone explain this to me?

P.S. Right now I'm chalking it up to needing an obsession so i don't think about the baby we're adopting all the time- it's a long process and the waiting is killing me.

It sure is true about wanting more and more daylilies. I have about 200 roses but never get obsessed with them the way I do with the daylilies. When the roses are finished blooming I don't get sad or go nuts but let those daylilies finish blooming and I am climbing the walls wanting more blooms.

I don't know, but it hit me this year too! DH can't understand it at all. I've only ordered a dozen or so, but I have a very long list (that gets longer every day), and need to prepare more space, and to thin out some that I've had for about ten years.

There is a legitimate use - in punch in lieu of more expensive liquor. Punch is an application where you don't want taste; you're only going for effect. And it is very effective, but you have to be careful of the stealth. My brother and I made the punch for a "dry" wedding (dry at the tea-total preacher's insistence - everyone else drank) and got his wife and kids tipsy. They were a hoot, but the preacher wasn't amused. At all. Speaking of flammability, the flames of the pure stuff are nearly invisible. DO NOT use near an ignition source. How do you plan to heat the evaporating flask? They make electric lab blankets and heaters especially shaped to a certain size boiling flask (the globe with a neck), but those are pricey and impossible to find outside a lab supply. Or if you have an Erlenmeyer or other flat-bottom, you could use an electric stove burner with an insulating pad. Don't go too fast. This is going to be interest. Take pics? Dennis

we have had over normal snowfall this winter. there is still a couple foot of snow on the fields with only a few bare spots under trees. But the pair of Lewis's woodpeckers are here early and the male is drumming on the light pole setting up his territory but the male and female are both coming to the feeders together so i don't think they are ready to start with the eggs. the juncos and chickadees and most of the winter birds are still here and usually leave about the later part of march to nest elsewhere. My orioles come mid april to late april to nest close bu usually 3 pairs. Most of the spring birds do not show up till mid april to mid may. and have not seen any of them yet.

Of course it's not that simple you pompus pain in my a$$. This child does NOT have a learning disability. She's 13, she's hormonal, and she's gone from an environment where her BM did not correct her for bad grades to an environment where it's expected (by her father) that she do as well as she can. She was allowed to slide on every D or below by her BM. This child is not stupid as her grades the past two weeks have shown, and she does not have a learning disability. She simply doesn't want to apply herself. Question though.... Since when did you become an expert in my state's special education system? As a special education instructor of 6 years(yeah that's right.) as well as a qualified Calculus and trigonometry teacher I think I'd know a little more about the system here considering I fight for the kids in my system daily. You haven't seen learning disabilities until you've actually been there. That website doesn't show junk. It was written by a bunch of stuffed shirt politicians who wouldn't know a learning disability from a rock. "Child Find." The state must identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities in the state who need special education and related services. To do so, states conduct "Child Find" activities. A child may be identified by "Child Find," and parents may be asked if the "Child Find" system can evaluate their child. Parents can also call the "Child Find" system and ask that their child be evaluated. Or Referral or request for evaluation. A school professional may ask that a child be evaluated to see if he or she has a disability. Parents may also contact the child's teacher or other school professional to ask that their child be evaluated. This request may be verbal or in writing. Parental consent is needed before the child may be evaluated. Evaluation needs to be completed within a reasonable time after the parent gives consent." That's step one. "THE STATE MUST identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities in the state who need special education and related services." The state. Different states, different procedures. As we were concerned about this child when she came to live with us we had her tested before she was properly enrolled in school. By the schools and by private methods. As her grades from the previous year showed that she did well the first semester and dropped off towards the end of the year, as a parent and as an instructor, of course I was concerned. So the tests. As I've said probably 50 times before this child shows NO sign of a learning disability. Her vision has been tested twice in 6 months because she does wear glasses, and that's a concern also. Care to grill me some more. Want me to fax you the copies of the test scores and outcomes? A therapists notes? A graph of her sleep cycle? A copy of my grocery lists? Hell we'd might as well be thorough here since you're such an expert.

Hey nothing wrong with being cheap, I believe being cheap but efficient are two necessities for us gardeners haha. I replanted it into a larger pot and surrounded the existing soil with a compost mix. Anyways, thank you, I did a test run in which I placed a smaller jackfruit in a part shade location and my larger one in the sun. The smaller has shown good color and since I've transplanted the larger one to another pot it has come back. Its' roots were crammed in that little pot. WOW, those jackfruit tap roots huh? Nice jacks by the way, nice solid trunk on that bigger one. Anyways, thank you for your tips!

I have always liked daylilies, but it wasn't until last summer when I had found this forum and had seen all of the beautiful pictures of dl's that I had never seen before or even knew had existed, that the bug bit me. It wasn't that bad, until I discovered the Lily Auction. I went from having maybe 10 different daylilies, most no names that I can't ID, to having over 120 named ones, most but not all came from the LA. It has become a hobby for me, collecting different daylilies, like one would with stamps or coins. Gardening has always been a hobby for me, but my main concentration of plants will be daylilies and hostas. I now want to get into crossing them and seeing what kind of lilies I can come up with. I made a couple of crosses this year, more than likely when the plants have settled in more I'll do more, but mainly space growing the seedlings is an issue, so I can't do many. But yes, it has become an obsession, but I like it! : )

Mostly, it is the idea of getting up every morning and knowing there is a brand new bloom out there waiting for me to come see it! This year,it was all the extra rain this spring, and daylilies I hadn't seen for a couple of years really shone. Now I am aware of how much watering really makes a difference for DL's. And I got the buying bug again.

I can't really answer your question Tanya, but I was bitten by the 'daylily bug' this last winter too...
I had several Stella' D'oros and a few other hardy daylilies around and had always liked the look of the foliage, but for some reason this winter I went crazy and ordered over 80 varieties, as well as buying hundreds of seeds on the LA...
Well, one supplier went out of business, so I only received around 60some plants (which was a blessing and I got my money back on the others) and I'm trying to find a place for them all in my small yard...
Back to the seeds from the LA... I have over 200 seedlings growing now and have to get them into a seedling bed very soon (alittle late, I know)...
I just love the thought of growing seed and getting some new flower that no one else has ever seen before... waiting for that first flower to open (FFO) and seeing what that plant can really do...
I'm still buying seed off the LA (Just can't help it), and can't wait to see what turns out...(BTW I'm already pollinating my new plants and hoping to get some of my own seed later...several pods are maturing as we speak...
I should mention I am partial to spidery and UFo types, but do love all daylilies... :-)

I know just how all of you feel. I have 74 named daylilies. I like tall daylilies but not too tall and huge flowers. Oh, and fragrance is a big plus for me. I just ordered some seedlings from Mary Jane Meadows. I can't wait to get them.

I can take a piece of each of the above posts and it comes close to summarizing my addiction. The variety of blooms, the ease of crossing and comming up with a flower that no-one has ever seen before, the fact that it does make your yard a new adventure every day as it is everchanging, and lastly they are EASY! I do roses as well, and have about equal amounts of each ( around 275 daylilies, 225 roses ), and was thinking of naming my last picture post "deadheading roses AKA why I love daylilies!). With daylilies, the amount of reward for the time invested is out of this world.

In my case, I'm blessed (or maybe I should say cursed) with the ability to discern fine distinctions among plants. Where one person might see two very similar red daylilies, for example, I see two completely different plants. What better way to make use of that ability than with daylilies, seeing as how I can plant about 50,000 of them if I want LOL.

Another reason to go with daylilies rather than with roses or irises, say, was my yard -- too small for more than a few shrubs; too shady and too damp for many irises.

Now that I've moved and could probably grow all the irises and roses I want, it's too late....I'm thoroughly addicted to daylilies!

....otoh, why not just grow everything! LOL.

I read everyone else's response to your question and realized that like Karen, it was this forum that did me in...All of those gorgeous pictures. They didn't look anything much like the ones, I had been growing...I didn't even try to keep up with the names of them before. Now I have ordered those wonderful labels from Oakes...no daylilies, but I love their labels. I just accept it. I have to have more. And now, I see the beauty in the gorgeous new introductions. And I want more!
