Way Too Early So What's Going On????

For the past 2 seasons, I've had Caroline Wrens nesting in a wall planter next to my patio. They always began nestbuilding in mid April and are year around residents here.

I have a decorative bird house hanging on a wall on my breezway, beside a door where there is constant traffic in and out each day. The bird house is flat on the back, has three entrance holes, one on each side and at the top...slanted wood roof. Yesterday I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them taking nesting materials into this box! The bottom is already covered with some moss purchaed at a garden center.

Gosh, it's just 3/4 and still cold in our area so I'm mystified as to why they are building so early. Could they just be laying claim to this site for the time being? Early nesters in my yard are usually bluebirds and chickadees, but even they don't usually start until mid March. Any ideas?
