Moving from Minnesota

I will be moving from MN to Marco Island, FL within the next month.

Can I bring any of my perenials with me?

I have numerous hostas, daylillies, bee balm, iris, bleeding hearts.

I'm sure the peonies, lily-of-the-valley, lillies, and poppies won't move.

Any advice on transporting them? I'll be driving.

colleen - leave your plants behind. Even though we have day lilly, iris, and bleeding heart vine here in Florida, your plants have been acclimatized to Minnesota and will all more than likely die here.

Start new, there are thousands of species that thrive in zone 10 and they're all waiting for you.

The day lilies are the only ones, if they are the evergreen, that would have a chance to make it. Sorry, I know how hard it is to leave plants you loved behind. But soon you will have new and different plants to love. :o)

Beware of using bone meal if you have doggies that will have access to that area. I once planted tulips, placing some bone meal in each planting hole. My 3 furbabies did not rest until they had every newly planted tulip dug up, trying to get to 'the bone'. Just try and keep your bulbs as cool as possible, and then plant asap once the area is ready. Thanks everyone! I tried to put info in "my page" but it's not showing so I'll brief it here...I've gardened all my life but recently had to downsize to a Studio Apt which I share with my 12yr old Tortie Point Himalayan Queen buddy.We share a nine foot SW exposure bay window to grow Hipps in.Yah,her Cat tower is in the middle and she will soon be sorrounded by pots and blooms.Currently I have a Samba,Moonlight,Madrid,Faro and a Dancing Queen in bud.I had no blooms for Christmas because 2 of 3 shipments arrived frozen via UPS and FedEx.The 3rd from JS was cancelled because they use UPS exclusively.(bummer eh) Fortunately I received a few replacements and also found a few bulbs here locally in our many Garden Centers.Local selections had been on sale for sometime.Most bulbs had been picked thru and looked very unpromising.I had already had my fill of bruised,dark,oozing sick partially frozen bulbs already.From what I've read here ALL of you have had this lovely experience eh? A great gal named Kathleen at Easytogrow is sending me a few bulbs Monday.We did a test run of a few bulbs via USPS already and that worked great.No frozen crispy soon to be mushies! I went to RC today to order a few more.I'd especially like to try "Showmaster" and "Exotica"Unfortunately they are not accepting any USA orders at this time.It's really quite sad that JS is sitting on all those Bulbs that they cannot get out because of Temps.I've bought from them before and always recieved FAT healthy bulbs from them.If they would opt to ship USPS by buyer choice.They'd have a customer right here! You think? funny eh..In the last few weeks here (sans blooms) and bitter cold of Minnesota.I could come here and see all your posts,the pix and read.I'm blest and humbled by all the experts that keep this Forum alive and blooming.You're unique and amazing people.It's going to be an adventure hanging here with all of you.There are many bulbs that I want to try and that will all come in time.I heard mention of Importing from Maguires? Count me in! One I'd like for sure is "City of Grafton" See the wish list has started and I know of this CHAD syndrome.I must keep in mind my window space and if my Cat buddy gets ticked I might be asked to leave......lol Peace.Mark Pix will come with Blooms Also,I travel Quebec,Quebec and to the North at least twice a year.I have done so for many years and it's home away from home.I love the Culture,People and Natural beauty there.You bet I speak Canadien French also

You are moving to a much drier area of the country, no doubt, although you will probably get a bit more moisture in your area than we do in Oklahoma City. Also, your soil is going to be better, as I've been previously advised. In OKC most people have horrid red clay. I'm lucky, I don't, but I still have tree roots and clay to deal with, so I have to amend a lot. I'm trying to grow aroids (like jacks) - like colocasias and alocasias, so you might even want to extend your interest in this genus. A lot of them are hardy here, where they wouldn't be in your Minnesota climate. Hostas do well here. I have a few in my yard. I do have Arisaema nepenthoides, and am trying to grow A. triphyllum, dracontium, serratum, whipcord lily, sikokianum (silver center), from seed. I got some triphyllum tubers from a friend. I have some typhoniums I planted last year, and a remusatia vivipara (hitchhiker elephant ear). I am planning to plant tubers of malanga I bought at the grocer here (which is a xanthosoma species that looks like an EE). There is another person on the Oklahoma forum who loves these plants, too, who goes by Wolflover. She'll be along soon. Lilies do well in Oklahoma. Hi Colleen - welcome to Florida! I would have to agree with the others - leave your plants and start fresh. I tried bringing some of my favs with me when I came from Montana a few years ago and ended up losing them. I wish I had just left them for someone else to enjoy.

Good luck with your move and drive safe! It's a long haul. I listened to two entire books on CD on my drive here.

Hi Colleen,
Welcome. I have to agree not to bring your plants. Although we have irises and bleeding hearts that will grow here, they are not the same types that grow up north.
Once you get settled watch this group for plant swap parties. You'll soon have more neat plants than you'll know what to do with. As well as some new friends! You don't need anything to trade either.
By the way, you must be a glutton for punishment, moving down here during August/September. Or one tough cookie!

Hi and Welcome to Florida, and to the Florida Forum!

I lived in Minneapolis (also ND and WI) and can confirm what others have told you here. Your plants won't survive. I brought iris and daylilies with me, convinced I was a good enough gardener to keep them alive. I was wrong and humbled when my lovely plants failed to come up their second year. Gardening in Florida is like starting all over again: new things to learn, new plants to grow, new climate to get used to. You'll feel like a novice for a while but this forum will help you as much as they helped me, I'm sure.

There are daylilies that do well, but they are all of the evergreen variety and for the most part have been grown right here in the state. Hostas, peony, lily of the valley, and poppies won't thrive at all. Your bleeding heart is not at all the same one they talk about here. This one is a vine with much different flowers. Leave yours where it is.

The bee balm (monarda, right?) should be OK, so if you want to try one of them, make it that one!

Would have to agree with the other and add this is definitely the worst time of year for temperate plants. You might have some luck in winter but only temporary.
I grew bearded iris for around eight yeras by putting them in the frige and growing in winter. Not really worth the effort. There are sooo many species to choose from but probably types you've never heard of. gary

Ok I must disagree on the Hostas but here me out. I grow them in my screened in porch in a pot.However I think it would be more trouble than its worth to cart them all the way to Florida.I think the trip would do them in.

I see this thread is a few years old.......but perhaps someone is still around to see/reply to my post?

I am also moving from Minnesota to Florida.

I am not planning on bringing any flower plants, but would like to bring my rhubarb and chives. What about other herbs(parsley, dill, rosemary)?
