Old gas grill what to do, charcoal???

Got a question I have an old gas grill that structurally is in good shape, however the gas bars dont work and the gas line leaks. I love to barbaque and need a alternate in case of a storm. Has anyone ever used a gas grill like a charcoal grill (tank removed obviously) it seems feasible any ideas? Cant really afford to replace or repair at this time.

I used a recycled gas grill for a long time.....

Thing is there're not built air-tight like a standard charcoal grill.....and air-tight allows control of the flaming embers and thus your flaming food...so grilling requires more attention and maybe some spray water

It also needs a pan to catch the ashes or else the HOT ashes land on your flipflops while you're cooking....(ask me how I know)......

Is the shell cast aluminum and who made it? If it is aluminum and you can get parts, which are frequently available from your big box store then rebuild it, including a new gas line, it will be cheaper than buying charcoal over the long run...these newer grills don't last more than 2-3 years if exposed to the elements, better to keep an older cast aluminum grill on the porch or in a garage and bring it out when you want to grill, they'll last twenty years this way and can be rebuilt when necessary.

We had one of those grills when I was growing up. It always seemed kind of unsteady to me. I saw a box grill at WalMart last year with an adjustable height charcoal grate. You adjusted it with a knob, but the cooking grates stayed put. I agree with GrillMeister. I bought my first Genesis 3000 when Weber first started making them in the 80s. I had a traditional Charbroil, and the aluminum castings corroded to where the whole thing turned white. Also, the "H" shaped pressed-steel burner corroded to where I had very little heat control. And the chrome wire grills lasted maybe a year. The engineer in me really liked the Genesis design with the pipes for burners, the flavorizer bars and the porcelain coated parts. I did the math, and if the Genesis only lasted up to its warranty, it was cheaper to own the Genesis than to buy Charbroils like the one I had. That Genesis lasted over 10 years. I'm now on my second Genesis; a 1000, which is about 8 years old or so. (I found I didn't use the external burner) I've replaced the bars and grates with stainless parts. And this past weekend, I replaced the rails that the bottom tray slides on. Weber sent those to me at no charge. If I were buying a new grill now, it would be a Silver C. I wouldn't spring for the Gold, cause the SS lid is not that big of a deal to me. I can replace the bars and grates in stainless if I need to down the line. I wouldn't spring for the Summit series, 'cause it's a lot more money for something that is not much more functional. It does look cool, though... The Silver Weber is a great cooking machine.

Well, I have cooked a 15 lb turkey, with good results. And it was done very quickly - in about 2 hours, as I recall. I have also cooked cornish game hens, two up, with great results. I've seen photos of baby back ribs being cooked with the rotisserie, which looks like a good idea as well, although trussing them up on the spit is probably a bit complicated. Basically though, I think poultry is ideal for rotisserie, as they are hollow inside. I don't know who well a leg of lamb or beef roast would do, but probably they would be fine as well. I really like the cleanliness of rotisserie cooking - the dip pan catches just about everything and the drippings don't burn so they make good gravy as well.

We went to a couple of barbeque places today and ending up buying the extra large Big Green Egg, and I think we will be very happy with it. Kevin thinks it will be great for parties, and now it will be even easier for us to cook for a crowd. Since we now have three charcoal grills, we can use separate grills for separate dishes which will make it easier for us to make multiple dishes at once, even if they require different temperatures. We also have the electric smoker, and I have to say that we get a more intense smoke flavor from that than we do from the charcoal - or at least it permeates the meat more. For smoking chilies, only the charcoal will do the job the way I want it. The BGE that we bought also has a pizza stone and can be used for grilling pizza - something that I've been wanting to do since first visiting the pizza making forum. We bought some outdoor lights for our pergola, and I think they will provide way more light than we required, but at least we can lower the wattage when we want to. I haven't bought anything for lighting the fountain yet because I want to have that installed by an electrician on an exterior wall of the house. I'm hoping to light much of the back yard that way and have it on a dimmer. I don't really want underwater lights in my fountain at this point but will talk with the electrician about that. I'm thinking that I will get my yard lit in stages and start off with getting some outdoor outlets installed at strategic points so that lights could be hooked up later. I tried that many years ago and it worked for a while... until the bottom fell out and dumped a load of hot coals on the ground. The cost of rebuilding it probably exceeds the cost of a charcoal grill, too. I left my ancient gas Weber when we moved. I got a charcoal grill and a chimney starter for just temporary. I am amazed at how quick I can get it grilling, and how much better the food is. We grill several times a week, year around. I'd recommend putting the old one out by the curb and getting a quality, solid fuel grill.

Flower Pot oh hahah i am known at the zoo for using anything I can find as a planter even old bikes that had baskets attached and I have several old boats ive made into planters, Tom thanks Ive had several accidents adding up to 23 stitches on my left arm, wrist and palm no garden work getting done here anyway looked at it today its a Charmglow no cast iron and it is probably 3 years old so what do you think? it does has a cabinet underneath so hopefully unlike Doug I won't burn myself but the inside is pretty rusted I really would like to reuse this like I said cant afford to buy new I can afford a chimmney starter they are awesome with charcoal.
