What strange advice not to get rain from above. My neighbor had beautiful ginger growing in her yard. She did absolutely nothing to help it grow. I got a free red ginger a few months ago I have it in a 3 gallon pot in the shade. It has already set a baby. It has gotten rain for about 20 of of 30 days. No harm done.

I grow quite a few different gingers, there are so many. Red button is a costus and they are extremly easy to grow in zone 10. Part sun will suit them fine, water at least once a week. Once established you can basically forget them and they will still grow and bloom for you.

I'm in zone 9a and my parents, who live next door, have a good sized patch of this ginger growing in their yard. It's growing under a sweet gum tree on the south side so they get part sun and part shade. The plants get watered by the irrigation twice a week and whenever it rains but other then that get no special treatment. They freeze back to the ground every winter but never fail to come back in the spring. Right now they are blooming. This is a pretty tough ginger that doesn't need any babying.

Thank you all so much. I'm having to get creative about where I put things into the ground as I've already planted out so much, but this just cries out for ground planting vs. a pot to me.

I have one area that would get early morning full shade, mid day full sun and late day dappled sun. I'm hoping that will work. I will probably try to divide this and put it in another bed that gets mid day part sun (really late morning to late day).

I had quite a few gingers at one time, but only have three now. They grew with no care at all except water and a handful or two of organic fertilizer now and then under a large oak tree.
