Food Mill for Tomatoes

Well, here it is June and I've fooled around and still don't have a food mill for my tomatoea. I'm sort of glad I didn't order one from Villaware - seems they are having problems delivering. But anyway, I would like omne that takes the seeds out without just making juice. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Do you have a kitchen aid mixer? I just used my mill first time yesterday. There' a learning curve. I jammed it up with berry seeds twice and hubby had to operate.
Thank goodness for hubby or I would have chucked it in the trash!
Once figured out it did a decent job, although I wish it came with two sized strainers.
The meat grinder which you have to have to use it works great!
Overall, this will work for me but I might have gotten a Villaware if I needed to do heavy jobs.

I bought this food strainer from these folks. I am very happy with the strainer and the vendor, and put hundreds of pounds of tomatoes through it last season. I also bought a set of screens as I make a lot of salsa, and I like my tomato sauces & soups to be slightly chunky.

There is a little bit of a learning curve on using these, so don't get discouraged. It really makes the process much faster. Also, if you take it apart BEFORE emptying the tomato skins and seeds (and thereby flinging it all over the kitchen), dogs are a wonder pre-clean for the kitchen. In my case, they ate it so fast I didn't even have time to put down the parts and rinse my hands!

The ones you list are probably the most common but you can also use it to make seeded or seedless jams and preserves, apple and other fruit juices/cider, grape juice, any fruit or vegetable purees/sauce, baby food, relishes, chutneys, rice potatoes, guacamole, pesto, etc. Don't restrict yourself to just applesauce. Which model of mill Jennie? The different models work differently and give different results. So which one are you looking at? For example the Victorio/Roma/Squeezo types Victorio Roma using the standard screen gets all the seeds and skin, core pieces, etc. The stuff that remains after processing the lightly pre-cooked whole tomatoes is a solid compact mass of the stuff you don't want. So solid and dry that it can be difficult to clean. I do recommend staying away from the vacuum clamp ones however. The vacuum just doesn't hold as well as the actual clamps. The Foley food mills Foley food mill types have a more coarse screen so some seeds and a little skin can get through. Some models come with a set of interchangeable screens. The old fashioned food mills like old-style-food-mill get it all and keep out all but the smallest seeds but also has more waste so you don't get it all and is much more work. The so-called "tomato press" types like have no advantages other than cheap price IMO as many seeds and skins pieces get through. Tomato-Press So the Victorio, Roma and Squeezo using the standard screen are the two most commonly recommended models and you'll find several past discussions here about the pros and cons of them. You will get all the juice and I'd estimate 95+% of the pulp. With no further cooking down and stirred well it makes the ideal tomato juice consistency for jarring. For sauce some further cooking down is needed unless you pre-roast the fruit or let it settle out overnight in the fridge and then skim off the water that floats on top. Hope this helps. Dave

Dave. last year when you posted the info on the Villaware, there was several post on the forum about not receiving their purchases and not being able to contact the company. So I held off on ordering it and then the deer got all of my tomatoes. So far, crossed fingers, they've not been in my garden this year.

Thanks everyone. I ordered the Roma for 59.95 with four free screens, a grape, salsa (which is the one I really wanted) a berry and pumpkin.These are normally $39.99 for the set.If anyone's interested I'll let you know how the purchase goes and delivery.

joy, I'm late to the party here but I have an old Squeezo, the all metal version of that Victorio posted.

Mine has three screens, I usually only use one because I like my salsa chunkier than I get when I put them through, even with the salsa screen. It's a champ for applesauce too, BTW.

Ahhh. I think those problems then were with the various sellers/vendors, those who sell through amazon for example, not the Villaware Company itself. From your OP I thought you had heard the company itself was having production problems or such.

I think I'm going to have to try that Roma. For that price it's better to have the extra screens and not deal with my kitchen aid jamming up on too many seeds.
