Sick daylily (I think)

Okay so a question about my daylilies and their buds. My plants (four, all the same) are heavy with unopened blooms. But instead of opening they dry up on the stalk. I asked this question earlier and was told it might be thrips. But I cannot find any bugs on them and the foliage looks great. Really green and healthy. Could it still be thrips under those circumstances?

I'm so frustrated I'm ready to cry! It's like my plants want to bloom and I don't understand what is making them dry out like that.

It could be thrips.Are there bumps on the buds? if so,it is thrips.Daylilies do like their water.Perhaps they have enough moisture to maintain the foliage,but not to mature the buds.Check for spider mites too.

you definitely have a sick fish. i think the best treatment for sick goldfish is what is called the salt treatment. make sure the water is clean, aerated and use dechlorinater. keep the fish in 1% salt solution as described on the package for healthy fish. if you have a sick fish you can increase that to 3x the recommended for a few weeks until the fish recovers. this amount will damage live plants so don't do it in a planted aquarium. but aquarium or pond salt from a pet storeÂdon't use table salt as it usually contains iodine. kosher sea salt is ok, but will cost you 10 times what pond salt will. it is very cheap and as effective as most medications. it will contribute to the overall health of the fish so you should use even if the fish are healthy to increase thier slime coat and protect their gills from nitrate damage. i try not to use medications because they often harm bacteria cultures and will cost more than the goldfish. i use salt constantly and have never had a sick fish that did not come to me sick. water changes are usually beneficial as long as you treat the water, keep the temperature constant and don't stress the fish when you do it. good luck.

Natanya, You sound like such a hoot! Wish you were my neighbor. I've never tasted a daylily, but good for you. I saw someone asking for daylilies to trade for other plants on the plant exchange. They said they heard they were good "dipped in butter". I sort of cringed without even thinking... seemed canabalistic for a moment. I guess I am really too involved with my daylilies to consider them as food. I guess though that if we were starving, we'd sure be able to go to the garden and do some nibbling. Lindac...I'm getting a bottle of the Canadian stuff...LOL Thanks Chris..and the others that identified HVX. Now I know what to look for. Lady Guinevere is within a new garden constructed last year. I have discarded it by putting it in a Grad bag. Tomorrow it's out-of-here...when the garbage is picked up. I believe that I have two more infected: Shade Fanfare, one that has grown nice and big for 4 years before the virus HVX appeared....the other is Choo Choo Train, yet in another garden. I was also going to say that the tile looks a little pink or peach on my monitor, and I'm not sure if it's the right undertone for your granite. I also like calm backsplashes (especially with busier granite), but I like it to have a little variation. I think a variation in honed and polished sounds great. I'll personally miss your backsplashes when you make a decision. It's always fun to see what you've found.

Bud drop is more noticeable on daylilies that receive inadequate moisture. When under stress, the plants compensate by having fewer flowers. Some buds turn yellow, shrivel up and fall off.

I will check for bumps. I did not know that was a symptom but will look. Would I see the bugs themselves on the outside of the bud at all? I'm afraid I would not know what spider mite damage looks like either I have never been troubled by either bug before.

Bambi and Julie:

Your water question is a good one. I really have not watered them all summer as they are in a mixed bed with other plants that do receive a fair amount of water. So direct watering? No. I will start watering the daylilies themselves and see if that changes the situuation. The thing is that up until a few weeks ago they were blooming madly (without really being watered) hence my confusion over the sudden drying. Right now my plants are all blooms (that don't open) and no actual flowers at all.

Thrips would be inside the bud. Break one off and peel it apart. Look for small brown to black insects that move quickly, about the size of an exclamation mark(!).
I usually note bud drop after drastic changes, such as wet to very dry, or dry to very wet. I think daylilies benefit from regular watering.

Thank you. I did get in there this morning and cut off all the stalks with dried out buds and left the ones that looked like they might have a chance of opening. I opened both a dried out one and nice great healthy bud from each plant. Found no critters although thank you for the clarification on the (!). I think someone else was trying to explain that to me and I didn't catch it.

We were slapped down pretty hard with that quick onset of heat from a few weeks back. So I will get into a routine of regular watering and see if that gets some results. The plants just looks so good otherwise. I read a little about spider mites this morning too and don't see evidence of them. I'm going to try and post a picture tomorrow.
