Mystery stains on my laundry
Comments (17)I originally tried Dawn because it was always advertised as being great for getting rid of grease (on dishes)--in the old commercials they'd squeeze a droplet of Dawn into a container filled with greasy water and voila! I don't use it on dishes BTW, didn't like it for handwashing, but was happily surprised by how well it did on grease/oil stains on clothing. I needed to try something after I couldn't find Grease Relief anymore. Again, it might take more than one treatment/wash, and some stains just won't come out completely (esp the older ones), but it's always worth a try. I've saved more of DH's shirts than I can count! :-)...See MoreMy electric stuff fades in and out
Comments (4)The utility guy came, fixed it, and left. A squirrel had apparently eaten my ground (or did he say "Neutral") wire up on the pole in my yard between my house and the the main line. He said that was probably the cause even before taking a look. He climbed the pole, replaced a wire, climbed down..and stuff works again. It took him 15 minutes from the time he pulled up. I offered him $5 tip, but he refused it. Electricity is a big mystery to me, so I'm glad that this wasn't some sort of ordeal. BK...See MoreWhat is this stuff in my pickle jar?
Comments (15)After reading comments here.. I went back through my processing notes to make sure I knew which jars they were. Turns out they are lacto-fermented jars, not processed jars. I was thinking of the wrong batch when I wrote earlier. It had been a long few days of processing several bushels into various stuff. So what I did was at the end of the canning night- I water bath pickled a few jars of green cherry tomatoes, and was pretty wiped out to do another batch.I brought the jars up to a brief boil while I prepped up the tomatoes. Pulled jars out of hot water,. into each jar went 2t mustard seed, 1t peppercorns, 1t dill seed , 1/2t hot pepper flake, 1 bay leaf, and a couple small whole fresh garlic cloves. Brine was 10 cups water, and 50 grams of salt, I used 30 grams of canning salt, and 20 grams of large flake sea salt. Brought briefly up to a boil and salt added in, then cooled down to room temp before pouring over the tomatoes. Weights went into the top of the jars, then the jars got capped with clean coffee filters bonnets. Sat on the counter for 4 days or so till they stopped bubbling. Then they got their solid cap and ring, and went into the back of the fridge. This was in October. I think I'm a bit alarmed because this is the first time doing something like this has resulted in a cloud like it has. I regularly will lacto-ferment carrots, and have done summer squash. And I have fridge pickled a whole ton of stuff. And of course hot water bath processing, but that's a whole nother pickle. But never seen a cloud before. Good to know it seems like a good thing and not a yucky thing....See MoreMystery plant popping up in my mint
Comments (6)Peanuts are fun to grow, but there are many varieties and most require a long growing season before you can harvest the nuts. This is why they are grown mostly in the South. Also, if you have squirrels, they may harvest them before you do! Typically for the north you can either purchase a shorter-season variety, or start plants in pots indoors in April, like you might do a tomato. In any case, I'd move it and grow it! They are interesting plants! At this point you may actually see the pegs forming late in the season, although you likely will not get any mature peanuts....See MoreSaintPFLA
