Name That Plant!

Mystery plant popping up in my mint

Hey guys,

I bought a peppermint plant and moved it into a plastic container until it goes to its real home. I noticed this guy popping up - it's probably been a week or so since I really looked in and noticed it. Any ideas??

It's outside kind of where bird seed gets tossed but I don't know if any of that stuff could have sprouted. Once in a while I do notice that some of the potted plants have been disturbed some, like a little paw was digging in the dirt. Any ideas???

I think one of our neighborhood squirrels might have done some planting for me:

Am I crazy or did a squirrel just plant/grow peanuts for me? Hmmm...to keep or not to keep??

If you are considering keeping it, move it to a larger pot or into the ground.

The picture is kind of blurry, but it looks like a Gaillardia (blanketflower) to me, perhaps Gaillardia pulchella. They're pretty good at self-seeding and grow in the wild in some areas, so it's not surprising to have it grow in places that it wasn't planted. Hi Socks - I set it up myself...well, my six year old son and 12 year old daughter helped a bit...pretty easy. Now, I am definitely not as confident in my ability to get it to pop 'down'...we'll see... I am mostly concerned about squirrels and chipmunks, I think. They just tear into everything around these parts. One summer they used every singly seat cushion on my deck furniture chairs to pad their nests! I really despise them. Maybe they won't be interested in this (I hope). Not sure what to do to keep them away, really. So, I am trying to extend the amount of time I keep a bunch of my cacti and succulents outdoors, rather than jamming them into my sunroom this year. That way, I may try to segue them into a dark dormancy in my garage instead of the sunroom - giving them a deeper sleep perhaps AND freeing up growing space under HID lights in my sunroom. They just wouldn't get the same dry cold in the sunroom that I think I can give them with the greenhouse - maybe end up with better flowering next year, too? By the end of November, I think they will all be indoors somewhere - either garage or sunroom. Then, the snows come...seems so far away with 90s forecast all week for us ;-). The reason I asked for the OS and sp is because there is a Java VM problem from a few years ago that used to open the PC up to malaware. If you go to the link below, you can read about it. Look at where it says How can I tell what version of the Microsoft VM I'm using? Here's how to determine the build number you're using: 1. Select Start, then Run. 2. On Windows 95, 98, or Me, type "command" (without the quotes). On Windows NT 4.0, 2000, or XP, type "cmd" (again, without the quotes). Hit the enter key. 3. In the result command box, type "Jview" (without the quotes) and hit the enter key. 4. In the topmost line of the resulting listing, you should see a version number of the form x.yy.zzzz. The final four digits are the version number. My other computer that was down was affected by this at one time. I learned about this after working on a friends son's computer. I reformatted the drive, then started patching by going to google. Before I knew it, the system was already infected. Once I did the fix, all was fine. Do you have any experience with them? I think I'll move it somewhere into the garden and see what happens...I don't have high hopes for peanuts though!! :)

Peanuts are fun to grow, but there are many varieties and most require a long growing season before you can harvest the nuts. This is why they are grown mostly in the South.

Also, if you have squirrels, they may harvest them before you do!

Typically for the north you can either purchase a shorter-season variety, or start plants in pots indoors in April, like you might do a tomato.

In any case, I'd move it and grow it! They are interesting plants! At this point you may actually see the pegs forming late in the season, although you likely will not get any mature peanuts.

a problem might be.. that bird seed peanuts.. may not be quality garden plants ... along the lines of .. you never know what kind of sunflower you will get out of such ...

have fun with it anyway ...

as with any rogue seedling, especially bramble berries ..... my usual default is... if you want a quality plant.. for your clime.. spend a few bucks. and get the right one ...

I think it's too late in the season to plant peanuts for a harvest in the north now anyway. So it's a moot point. Just transplant it and enjoy!
