Name That Plant!

mystery pop-up in garden

This flower came up in my neighbors garden this year. She swears that she never planted it, so it must have been dropped there by a bird or the wind, etc.

I would like to know what it is, ie: name,annual or perenialI collected some seeds from it and would also like some propagation ideas.

The picture is kind of blurry, but it looks like a Gaillardia (blanketflower) to me, perhaps Gaillardia pulchella. They're pretty good at self-seeding and grow in the wild in some areas, so it's not surprising to have it grow in places that it wasn't planted.

Also, Gaillardia pulchella is an annual, but there are some other species that are perennials, and it could be one of those as well.

I think I'd try digging first, that's pretty close to "good" plants. If you get a hole dug and still see root in it, then I'd do some boiling water, just right in the hole, slowly, steadily. You don't want to cook the other plants.

I'm looking forward to seeing it in full bloom. I am glad it wasn't a weed. North American Rock Garden Society has many members contributing seed from all over the US as well as abroad. After the Seed Exchange ends each year, surplus seed is distributed to local NARGS chapters. I did not keep the empty packets because I held little hope on germination on most items since each packet holds a small amount of seed and by the time I received them, the seed was not fresh and probably about a year old. After reading the description of Collomia grandiflora, I wonder if blue pollen is unusual in most flowers.

Peanuts are fun to grow, but there are many varieties and most require a long growing season before you can harvest the nuts. This is why they are grown mostly in the South. Also, if you have squirrels, they may harvest them before you do! Typically for the north you can either purchase a shorter-season variety, or start plants in pots indoors in April, like you might do a tomato. In any case, I'd move it and grow it! They are interesting plants! At this point you may actually see the pegs forming late in the season, although you likely will not get any mature peanuts.

Thanks so much for the quick responses. If it helps, I posted again with a not-so-blurry pic.
I will try planting the seeds that I collected from it next spring.
I already have planted some in a pot; but I don't suppose they will come up for me now, if it's an annual.??
