Thanks everyone for offering your pieces of advice--I really appreciate them all. It is also good to hear that Quickcrete is what you use to make up the bulk of the stepping stones, although I think Dena might have used leaf casting material in hers since she was essentially making her leaf castings directly in her stepping stones as opposed to incorporating already cast finished leaves into newly made stones. Hope I got that right Dena. I have some leaves I have made previously that are already finished--painted and polyurethaned. I made some leaves this fall that have still got to be finished so yes I am using prefinished leaves in my stones so that is why I am concerned about getting the Quickcrete on the surface of the finished leaves. It might be next spring before I actually get around to making the stepping stones--the weather has gone from the 80s to the 50s in the span of one week. Perhaps it is just a temporary temp. change. Dena, your leaf stepping stones are fantastic looking. BB, I really like your tufa container also. I too want to know what you used in it to get the coloration in the container. As I said previously, I have been making cast leaves for quite a while now and have probably made over 40 or so. Most were given as gifts, others were sold, and quite a few are in my yard/garden. I have also made a few tufa containers and bowls and want to try my hand at a few other things like grots when time permits. I have a few pictures of some of the leaves and troughs I have made linked below if you are interested. I am sure there are other pictures of them in my Photobucket account, but if you are interested, you can look through the yard pictures and scan for them. Once again, thanks for the help! Not combative, arumentative perhaps, but only in response to wildly exagerated claims based on fear, not fact. I offered you the official statements of the State of New York that clearly shows your degree of fear is unwarrented as far as black bears in New York are concerned. Read the paper I linked to from the State. Learn something and you too can be a know-it-all rather than offering fear unencumbered by fact. Something tells me that facts based on real-life statistics and experience will do little to calm your fears, however. I have seen only one bear in the Northern Adirondacks where I live even though this area has the State's largest concentration of black bears. I've come very close to others while hiking in woods in the Catskills when I lived in that area. Each time the bear showed no sign of aggression and retreated immediately. This is as much time I'll spend responding to your childish comments about lying. Certainly, it's more than you deserve. I suspected as much, your suggestion that we in New York remove all our bears. Fortunately, those of us who live here can look at the situation rationally, based on knowledge and experience and know the true risks and the common-sense methods of dealing with them. Methods such as the simple and practical act of calling your neighbors on the occurance of a bear sighting. This common-sense approach lets a neighborhood remove things that may attract bears such as bird feeders, accessable garbage cans and unattended infants in strollers. Without these attractants, a bear will move on. If our state adopts your suggestion, perhaps we can ship the black bears (and our far more numerous "man-eating" dogs) to your state? They might distract the alligators that are killing human Floridians at a far more alarming rate than NY bears and almost as fast as NY dogs.

OMG, I looked at your album, incredible! I am still looking at at it a lot, trying to pick a favorite, but there are many of them. Your stepping stones are just beautiful. I also would put them where they will be seen and maybe stepped on a little, but mostly admired. They are an inspiration for me, I always wanted to do them, but thought I had to do the whole pouring conrete thing and wait. So this method is more like it. Beautiful work! Bianchi

What did I use to make the claws?
it's all just rocks, flat, thin, white, skipper type stones on their sides.

Hey-j thats part of the *sow's ear* as it looks today, hopefully the rest will look as good! I was leary of posting BC everyone has such amazing gardens on here! it's like every picture is totally WOW!

I'm one post behind in responding! This is for you other post of you're overgrown area. SORRY!!!! The bear foot is cute.

When most of us post pictures we never show the uglier parts of our gardens, like the compost areas, etc.! You were very brave to bare all in your picture!! Sounds like you have a few obstacles to over come. Just do a little every year.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither were our gardens. Tell that Scrooge you're married to that you earn money too so you have the right to spend some of it your way!!! ( I have a H who loves grass so I start early and negotiate on where and how much sod I can take up).I can say all of this from thousands of miles away and your H can't get to me!!!

Mow the area if you can as that will make it look better until you form a plan. Flower beds in front of that building with room for access to it would be great. I can see hollyhocks hiding so much of it. I know most gardeners will share plants if you admire what they have and ask nicely. I share all the time. Good luck and please show us updates as they happen, maybe not this year but later.

And above all else WELCOME!!!

I thought I would post pictures maybe it would Inspire others who don't have the perfect yard to start with.

I think my compost area was my pride and joy for a long time! it's huge! and one of the first things me and hubby did together. but with three horses it had to be :) I think most of my friends thought I was nuts when I would drag them out to look at it and brag about the rich black gold!

it's really the womb of the garden for me.

It's not done yet as a planter is going along the side and may just continue all along the wooden fence. that would keep the plants safe from doggys or thats a idea I've been kicking around. it's great as I use one end one year and let the other side sit, I've been able to plant in pure compost, I cover it with a tarp in the winter. the best thing about it was the blocks where free or it would of cost a lot as they are rejects from hubby's work.
