Can you hear them????

I posted this on the end of another thread but am re-posting it here because I really want to know if this is "normal".

I had posted on the "who'd a thought it.." thread that my hubby went out to dump some stuff in the compost bin and came in and told me that you can actually HEAR those worms munching in there. He was pretty freaked out and said "it's alive!!".... So is this a good thing or bad thing. How do I know if these grubby little things are the "good guys" or if my composter has just become a breeding ground for grossness?????

I can't say that I have HEARD them. Although with all the activity in there I guess I would not be surprised. Hmmm.

It was late so it was pretty quiet outside. At first I thought he was pulling my leg because he is a joker, but he is totally serious.

I just want to know if that is "normal" and a good thing.....

I don't think I've ever heard a blade knock more or only on deceleration. They've always knocked hardest on acceleration and often not at all on deceleration. On the other hand I have heard loose rods do any combination although normally they knock hardest on acceleration as well. The one area that may knock hardest or only on deceleration would be a worn top main bearing. This is just based on my experience, not ruling anything out. Oh yeah, one other area of potential is a worn piston, piston slop knock.

Thanks again all: Boa is doing much better. She is eating like a horse, but still doesn't want to be left alone. I can't believe the difference in her since I stopped the antibiotics. She demands food now, and her catmilk. Her and Bear got into their first fisticuffs in a long time when I was taking too long to get the food in the dish. She got a huge dish of whipped cream yesterday (her favorite) and didn't leave a smidgen in the bowl for Apache to finish. She is back on the tapazole now for the hyperthyroidism and doesn't even know it's in her food. I am breathing a sigh of relief. I know nothing can live forever, but I can hope. Think she will be with us for a while longer. Praise God for answering my prayers. Jenny

So sorry to hear your neighbor didn't jump up and down when you told her you have sprouts. My neighbors at least grin and shake their heads--they remember last year when I gave away pots of perennials to anyone (including them) who showed up with room in their car. The font thing is just plain easy so I decided to give it a try. Getting the size right is a little tricky but I'm learning. I SO wanted to make it stand out how happy I am you have sprouts at last. I looked in the jug of lettuce seeds I WS a week or so ago and there are sprouts all over the growing medium. I'll post pictures as soon as they start looking like real lettuce--right now they're just a bunch of squiggly white lines. Can you believe I picked up more seeds at the job lots store this week? They were marked 50% off so of course I had to bring some home--dianthus 'Arctic Fire,' coreopsis 'Early Sunrise' & Shasta daisy 'Silver Princess.' Planting out is going to be a full-time job in another few weeks!!!

MP3 player has songs but I can't hear them

Hi Zep, I went ahead and upgraded to mp10 for my system. It seems nice so I'll go with it thanks. Unfortunately I still can't get the songs onto my pos mp3 player, there must be something wrong with it is all I can figure. I am able to rip songs from my cd's fine but the whole transfering them thing just isn't working. I am going to try the mp3 player in another computer at work tomorrow and I'll go from there. Remember we've had this thing for a few years just sitting in a closet with how to speak german on it so its no big loss. I'll go get another simple yet fairly inexpensive model at w-mart to learn on. I'm not giving up on this because I'm tired of listening to the boring elevator music the local station plays here in the middle of nowhere. Thanks, Neal

The first time I saw the Black soldier fly larvae in my compost pile I was a little surprised but they are eating machines. and help keep the flies away.

The black soldier fly larvae you can hear on occasion though I believe it is not the sound of them feeding but more the sound of them moving against each other.....I have millions of them here with all the rabbit manure and we keep a couple buckets with them in for composting and compacting kitchen scraps. To the bins of them under the rabbit pens I can add an entire grouper after the fillets have been removed and they will strip every bit of meat from it. It adds the fish to the garden, just in a round about way. I know when I can hear them that the mix is getting dryish and is time to add a cantaloupe rind or something wet.
