I've been neglecting the yard this year but having fun with pots. Here's a sample of containers inside the lanai.

This plumeria was grown from seed! It's the first time I've seen it bloom so I'm pretty excited about it.

That looks so relaxing and peaceful, friendly plants hanging out all around...

Ha, I have two pot ghettos, actually.
There is the cacti/succulent ghetto,
and the newly constructed herb ghetto.
Both certainly look a lot more "ghetto" than your assortment of potted things.

I'm not huge on pots. It's hard to combat the compulsion to put everything in the ground...

Kate, that looks so pretty. And neat and healthy.

MM, I'm with you, I put everything in the ground. The sprinkler can water it, even when I am away. Well, I guess I have my succulents in pots and a few other things.

How could I forget Just Joey and Tamora? I am getting Just Joey [also Brandy and Medallion] next weekend when I make my yearly pilgrimage to Robertsons Nursery near Houston - he doesnt ship, has the biggest, healthiest potted roses I have ever seen. I always come home with more than I need.... Brandy....a lot of these roses on my list are ones I have ordered for spring and havent grown yet. One that is currently growing for me that has had not one instance of blackspot is Vesper. I dont hear it mentioned much, but its a great little rose, very healthy. Its own root, and think it would do well in a pot. I am in east Texas, and it definitely heats up in the summer here. But I water constantly and spray fairly consistently so dont have too many problems. I dont really seem to have too many blackspot problems with the apricots that I grow - perhaps because I spray. I dont spray the rugosa Vanguard because rugosas dont like it. Ceterum, I have Versigny on order from Roses Unlimited. They unfailingly send great plants! Photos look gorgeous on this one, cant wait to see it bloom! As for the ones being the most orange, I think Pat Austin and Lady Emma Hamilton [on order for spring], Orange Ruffles and Anne Harkness would be. Apricot can be so many different shades - from a light, pale color to one with a yellowish tint to just a shade off orange. One I didnt list that is between apricot and orange is Lillian, from Roses Unlimited. It has a ruffled bloom, very pretty color. Dont hear this one discussed, but I like it. I like my apricots to be pure, no yellow - like Fragrant Apricot, Just Joey. Oh, and I left Evelyn off the list.....she is still in a pot, I understand she is a bit of a diva, so am still contemplating the perfect spot for her. She has a divine scent and a beautiful bloom. Another apricot shaded one I adore is Tahitian Sunset. I didnt care for it from the photos when it first came out, but when I saw it blooming at Chamblees, I zeroed in on it, was surprised to find it was this rose. The photos dont begin to do it justice, its one of my favorites. I have a long bed in the backyard that I am going to fill with apricot and mauves.....and edge with white, lavender and apricot periwinkles for summer. And am planning a formal bed with 4 beds surrounding a Knockout tree rose and will do one section of that in apricot, purple and mauves. Cant get enough of this beautiful color!! Would love to hear comments on other apricots being grown. Judith

To plant direct or to pot-up bands is so determined by where you are and when you get your bands. I began receiving bands the first week in March and through early April. The early ones were quite tiny and the weather was horrendous...as in freezing every night some nights to 20 degrees. I potted all the bands as received into 1-2qt pots. Would have used only 1 qt pots but didnt have enough. Watered as necessary and put them in the space they will ultimately have in the garden. When the forecast was for horribly cold nights they were moved to the porch. Well this went on for quite a few weeks. Two weeks ago I felt it was safe enough and they are all in the ground. A bonus from this strange method... Mutabilis & crepsule ware planned to be placed on the north side of a 6' stock-ade fence. It did nothing there...so it is now planted on the west side of the same fence. Maybe this moving the roses was not such a bad idea...just a happy accident as both are now growing. Had success moving 2 other roses that would not have been happy had I planted them immediately direct due to poor location choise. Just a thought. Jeannie

Thanks, Tammy! dsd, love your patio pot garden! That's sort of what I was trying to do with mine, decorate the edges of the patio, but yours is much prettier! I think my oldest potted one is Folklore at 7 years. You do have to occasionally root prune them and repot them. For me I can go a round 4 or 5 years before I have to do that but for you, with your much longer growing season, that may be only 2 or 3 years. It's usually pretty easy to tell when they need to be repotted. When you water them the water will immediately start running out the bottom of the pot because there's little soil left to hold it. I pull the root ball out of the pot, cut it back by about half and then repot with fresh soil...or find a bigger pot, lol! I'm always hunting for pots and pick them up when ever I come across a good deal and just stash them until needed. End of season sales at places like Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes or Big Lots are good places to get them cheap. Also check your local hardware stores. I've gotten some good deals at Costco too. I start out the spring with a slow release granular fertilizer scratched in. Then at least once a month with some liquid spray or drench fertilizer and organics, like fish emulsion. Watering depends a lot on the weather but I have a moisture meter and I use it! It help save me a ton of money on my watering bill because before I just watered about every third day because I didn't know if they really needed it or not. A 3 gallon pot is pretty small and a full size rose will out grow it in a season. A mini might last a few of years. A lot depends on the rose itself and how vigorous it is. Most of my pots are at least 15 gallons and I have a collection of 20/25 gallon ones for those permanently potted HTs.. For years I used Lowes Stay Green potting soil because it was the cheapest. I recently switched over to the Miracle Grow Moisture Control because we found it at a great price at Costco. As long as it's a good quality potting soil it doesn't matter which brand but I do try to stay away from the ones with fertilizer in them. I want to have control of when and what they get. I hope I got all your questions, lol! Yes, displaced, one of my beds is along the street and people regularly help them selves to blooms. I don't mind usually but when they do it the day before my rose shows I freak out! I've put signs up telling people to ask and I'd be happy to cut some for them but it did no good so now I pot the show roses. Frenchcuffs, yes and no. Usually it's whatever ones give me a decent bloom to cut show week, lol! I'm still working on my HT collection and haven't done very well with those. But I have won mini queen a couple of times, once with Robin Alonso and once with Snow Ruby so I'd say those were my favorites! My show Is Saturday and SR has a very promising bud coming!

I was asking these same questions last year :) I live in Knoxville, so we are similar in climate. I had about 20 1g pots, 10 5g pots, and maybe 10 still in their band containers by the time winter came around. After asking for advice on here, what I ended up doing was putting the majority of pots on my covered front porch and covering the open sides, where the rails are, with plywood to protect them from the wind. I also muched the top of the pots heavily and kept the pots very close together with the more tender varieties toward the center of my ghetto. I kept the most tender varieties in my unheated garage. For the bands, I purchased two of those mini greenhouses from Lowes (they cost about $50) and put them outside on the back patio in the most protected area. I also watered them about once a month. This system worked well for me. I think I lost maybe two plants (Austin's Allux Symphony...boohoo!) Had there been enough leaves around I would have covered the plants on the porch with them for extra protection, as quite a few posters suggested. I'm by no means an expert, and as you know last winter was mild, but this is what I plan on doing this year as well :) As for planting, I was told that the potted roses are better in the ground than in pots, even if you have to sink the pots with the roses still in them. I think my last potted roses made it into the ground around October. Some nurseries, like Pickering, offer Fall bareroot shipping. I know a lot my disagree with me, but my Fall planted bareroots do better than my Spring planted one. Just be sure to mulch well :) Good luck! I love your ghetto! I have a few too. I keep a lot around my pool, and a lot around my wildlife ponds in front. You can see some of the plumeria blooms from the road, people on bikes will stop and peer over the fence to try to see 'what's that gorgeous flower'.

My favorite pots are my sealed "mini ponds" that have different colocasias and xanthosomas. They are filled with water, have minnows (to eat mosquitoes) and some duckweed. I have one with Lime Zinger, one with Milky Way, one with Black Marble, one with fontanessii, one with Yellow Splash....it works well in periods of drought so that the plants never have to struggle for water, and gives a place for dragonflies to hatch and birds, bees and butterflies to land and drink.

I think pots are fun, but I try not to accumulate too many that might have to be moved in winter (ugh)

What a beautiful "ghetto." How long did it take that seedling Plumie to bloom? It's beautiful. And that drama queen catches my eye every time I see it.

Gorgeous!!! Love your plant stand that the orchids are on. What is that plant with varigated leaves to the left of the plant stand in the silver bucket? Very pretty!

Thank you all for the nice comments! There have been many times when I could not have maintained a container area like this but right now I'm loving it. It's nice to have a job that's really over every day at 4:30! I've never known what that was like before.

The variegated plant is an Angel Trumpet - Brugmansia. Can't remember the name of it. I haven't seen it bloom yet but the leaves are beautiful. Unfortunately, the bugs love it and I'm constantly battling them.

The orchid stand is awesome. The pots are set up so that if you water it from the top, the water drains through each pot to the one below. I keep challenging my handy neighbor to take this one apart so he can copy the pattern, but his golf habit gets in the way. I purchased it at the Epcot Garden Festival a couple years ago - maybe three years ago. It rolls so when cold weather hits, we just roll it up to the dining room door and lift the whole thing over the edge into the house. So much easier than carrying each pot in! I need at least 2 more for the remaining orchids and the angel wing begonias.

The Plumie is from seed purchased through e bay. It was planted 2 years ago, but I have a few others that are 2 and show no signs of blooming this year. The Aztec Gold Plumie was purchased 2 years ago from Exotic Plumeria in Seffner and it was about 1/3 that size when I bought it. It already had one branch.

I just ordered 6 yards of mulch and 3 yards of composted pine fines, so I'll be busy outside the lanai for a couple weekends! It will be nice at the end of each day to jump in the pool and look at this pretty corner.

Kate, that Plumie from Seed is Awesome!! I love it. Your pot ghetto is so interesting. I love mixing shapes and sizes like you did. I am so excited because Dennis just called to have me measure the area around my pergola and potting bench. He is getting a huge load of pavers that one of the homebuilders left behind. The community assn wants them hauled away!! heh heh He is going to lay out a new paver area around the pergola and bench so I can have a new level pot ghetto. He thought it would be easier if for me to tend if they were all grouped together rather than random bunches all over. The area he is going to paver is 16' x 12'. It's going to be like having a new outdoor room to decorate. I'll start a separate post with pics as we get the project going this weekend. YAY for me!

I had to chuckle when I spotted your pretty red plant stand...had one just like it (unpainted, tho), but gave it away.
I wish I'd kept it now!

I really enjoy my morning time putzing around and fussing over my plants...cup of coffee in hand...there's something so relaxing about it, isn't there?

Absolutely Gorgeous! I'm a big fan of container growing, and I love looking at interesting collections like yours.

I find that I take better care of the potted plants, than those in the ground. But, why is it that your mixture of pot sizes/styles/colors looks classy, while mine look tacky?

I can't keep mine as neat, since the hens kick out the mulch/soil every day. I spend a lot of time sweeping up soil and replacing it(G).

I only have 1 Plumeria, but after seeing yours, I think I need more..

You should be very proud!

All your plants look so very happy and beautiful. What a joy. I love all of them. Great pictures. I started a Pink Slaughter Plummie from seed and it is about a foot tall now. I was debating weather to put it in the ground or leave it in the pot. Now I think I will leave it. Thank you for posting the pictures.

Everything looks so lovely Kate. The plumeria you grew from seed is awesome! I enjoy gardening in pots also. Here in the island when a hurricane threatens I can take my potted plants indoors.
