I'm having the same problem with them eating my roses. They get inside the bud and eat it apart. As soon as we started getting the rains, they exploded. My neighbor has them all over her pool. I'm finding them dead on the front porch where we spray.

I worked in the Master Gardener plant clinic today and had a gentleman bring in a small beetle that he said all of a sudden had covered his tomato plants and was boring into his fruit. We found it to be a pepper weevil. Really nastly little buggers that destroy peppers and tomatoes.
Google pepper weevil and check the identity.

Nope, that's not what I have. They look like Japanese beetles, only black.

All I can find that looks like them is black ground beetles. They seem to have gone now. I put some sevin dust on the ground around the plants, and haven't seen anymore, but there isn't anything ripening right now. They are only attacking one kind of tomato - my Park's Whoppers.

I planted these tomatoes in the free compost from the county. Do you think the eggs/larvae could have come from there? I've never seen these before.
