First Harvest of the Year!

The other day we had burgers for dinner and I cut a few small lettuce leaves from a window box --- yay!

I started the lettuce from seed indoors in early March, and tucked small seedlings in the boxes with pansies shortly after St. Patrick's Day. I can remember years when I've had lettuce thriving enough for salads (sometimes self-seeded from the year before) by late April, but April was so dire here this year that the seedlings were stalled for weeks.

Still, they waited patiently through late-April snow, frigid nights, etc., and as soon as it warmed up just a teeny bit they started growing again, by which time I'd just about forgotten about them. It was great to remember them and find a few big enough to cut, because we'd just got back from being away and had virtually nothing in the fridge!

While I was at it, snipped a few chives (thanks, Ken!) and parsley (bought last week in a 4-inch pot --- I did try starting some from seed but without luck).

Zabby, happy harvester
